    320 hp awd full size wagon? Actually, you can buy this in the States. It's called a 2002-2003 Audi S6 Avant, and it'll only set you back about $16000.

    Plus, with so few wagons/estates on this side of the pond, you have to pay to play, as the saying goes. Apart from the European mfrs, only Subaru builds a wagon. Most of the American and Asians won't touch them.

    CAFE's "truck vs car" designation has EVERYTHING to do with why we don't have these. It's not because Americans inherently don't want wagons, it's because you dangle 50 CUVs in front of us with the occasional wagon and wonder why people are choosing #1 more frequently.

    Asinine.

    @Ash78: Uh, sorry, but except for Jalopnik readers, for the past 15 years or so, wagons have been seen as dorkier than minivans. Minivans! And those were seen as grocery-getter, you-lose-as-a-man mobiles when the SUV came out and started replacing those, letting dads pretend they still had some machismo after settling down in the suburbs. It's never been about CAFE, it's been about perception.

    But hey, trends are tricky, and the gradual acceptance of hatches in the small car segment and crossovers in larger sizes means some day we'll just come around and admit what we always wanted was a wagon all along.

    @RagtagOperation: It's been about both.

    It's a generational thing. Minivans replaced wagons, SUVs replaced minivans. CUVs are replacing SUVs because people realized they didn't really want to ride in trucks.

    Wagons are due for a comeback, particularly as people like me (born '82) start to have kids. Our moms drove minivans and SUVs. We recognize that you can have 80% of the utility of an SUV with all the performance of your favorite car in a wagon.

    Maybe that's why I own 2.

    I don't blame GM, I blame everyone who bought an Equinox over a Malibu Maxx, a Vue over an LW, a Tahoe/Suburban instead of a Caprice/Roadmaster, etc.

    Still, GM can show it's sorry for the public's asshattery by offering the important oily bits (and those seats) on the 9-3

    @Maymar bans bare chassis hoonage:

    Do you think people really wanted to buy SUVs? It was an artificial need generated by the automakers to create profits.

    You can't blame the car buying public for basically doing what they were told to do. Eventually the backlash came with the current malaise.

    Look at Audi, nice cars and still profitable although they'll take a hit this year for sure. Few companies are free from this economic hit.

    My family sure-as-hell wanted our Suburban. 4 kids, a boat and lots of snow travel.

    It was an artificial need generated by the automakers to create profits.

    WTF is an artificial need? It's not like they started un-paving roads or anything.

    That's exactly who I blame.

    @jduffy13: I think America wanted big cars, weren't willing to compromise on the bigness of their cars. After CAFE, SUVs were the easiest way to buy their bigness. And because of the general public's ignorance, or lack of caring, most manufacturers had little reason to keep building wagons.

    @jduffy13: It is (was?) a self perpetuating problem. People kept buying SUVs because they perceived them as more useful and safer than wagons and less dorky than minivans. Thus, car companies followed the fad, and made more SUVs. The public's misinformation, in addition to the buying frenzy and America's obsession with being on top of the latest and greatest thing pushed the law of supply and demand to the result of creating more and more of these hideous monstrocities we see all over now, this is a really long sentence.

    My point is; people buy what they want. Companies build what they perceive the people want.

    For what it's worth, I would buy one of these immediately. I'm completely serious--if GM wants me to mail them a deposit check to show how serious I am, tell them to post the address.

    Maybe I should take this up with Fiat, though, if they are going to end up with Opel. Can I continue to faintly hope that this will make an appearance, perhaps badged as an Alfa Romeo? That'd be sweet.
