Has anyone asked why GM does not simply install the volt powertrain in the Cruze??? Boom. Done.

No, GM will make us all wait to put it in a custom shell to sell for $40K which no one can afford right now.

I willingly admit that this website is better than most of the automotive focused pages, but Jesus you guys have a serious chip on your shoulders. BFD that GM didn't give you a test drive of a non-completed volt. Given the half hour driving "experience", what could you really tell us about a car that may or may not come out in 2010? I actually think GM did you a favor. They freed up more space for you to tell us I told you so. [jalopnik.com]

@Michael J Backus: Sure at 0 rpm that's great and all, but that seems like a tiny amount of torque compared anything with gears.

Tesla has 280 lb ft of torque with an 8.27:1 gear ratio, so the volt has 273 lb ft while the tesla has over 2300 lb ft after the transmission.

@greimel: You're assuming there's no gearing at all between the motor and wheels.

There would have to be a differential, which most likely has step-down gearing.

@Mad_Science: I just went off of the quote from the article. "Power flows directly from the motor to the wheels." I think that's a poor job on wired's part.

There's a big difference between jim gaffigan's standup going directly to me and jim gaffigan's standup going to my friend and then to me. Likewise, there's a huge difference between motor directly to wheels and motor to differential to wheels.
