This will get totally lost in GrandmaSideways flame job but here goes anyway. Maybe one or two people will read it.
The original "Gone In 60 Seconds" is actually a really crappy '70s movie with probably the greatest REAL car chase that ever has or ever will be filmed. Because it was done back in '74, before all of the CGI trickery, they had to do everything for real. The writer and director, H.B. Halicki, also did the stunt driving. I was told that he broke his back during a jump of the '73 Mustang 'Eleanor' shown in the film. Haliki was not a great film maker but he was the real deal. He died in '89 trying to film a sequel to "Gone in 60 Seconds". Think about that happening in corporate Hollywood today. The writer/director of a movie dies doing his own stunts.
I grew up in the part of LA where Gone in 60 was filmed. I've eaten in a lot of the restaurants shown, most now gone, been a part of the car culture the film tries to show. It's not a great film, the writing is poor, the acting stiff. But like the script for another type of 'off Sunset' movie making, the dialogue is just there to get you to the action. If you like cars, like fast cars hauling ass in movies, there is no better movie than this funky '70s cult classic.
Has no one seen either:
1) Love the Beast
2) Truth in 24
3) The Driver
????
Love the Beast made me almost cry about the love a person can have for an auto. Its a great movie about friends, family and cars.
Truth in 24 was flat out awesome.
The Driver is fantastic late malaise cinema noir featuring massive car chases and a cast of non-hereos and anti-heroes. Bruce Dern rocks.
I will add that the orignal Gone in 60 seconds and Vanishing Point were part of my formative years, along with The Driver, on Speedvision's Awesome "The Lost Drive In" featuring Bruce Dern.
@The Dead Inside Grp. Co. Ltd.: I forgot about love the beast. That Jay Leno moment made himself sound like a real jerk. Uh Jay how many cars have you personally worked on to race prep quality yourself? I think Bernard has a bit to do with it to.
Overall, I like the list. Personally, I have Two Lane Blacktop in the #2 slot, as it is as much a film noir masterpiece as it is a car movie. Vanishing Point is my #1.
I agree with leaving Ronin off the prime list. While I like it and watch it regularly, it's derivative, both in car action and character action. Without the great Paris setting, it would not be worth discussing. I do understand the younger folks liking it, though; they identify more with the story and actors. Still, without Bullitt, Ronin probably does not exist.
Hmmm, I'm a little thrown because this is about loving to see cars onscreen and not chases per se. Well, what about The Transporter movies? That's all about the love of a car. And kicking butt. And hot women with accents.
