    Murilee, isn't it a conflict of interest to be both a participant AND a judge at the same event? I posed this same question to your counterpart (Lieberman, over at another car blog) but received no answer whatsoever.


    Seems like you could disqualify almost everyone, and your team could win be default....

    @UDMan: Isn't it a rule never to question the all-knowing and all-powerful judges? If they decree they shall be allowed to race, then they shall be allowed to race.


    Besides, LeMons isn't about winning, it's about having huge shitpiles of fun. Why would Murilee bother about disqualifying other teams so her team can win? That just increases the odds that the V8olvo will meet its untimely demise in the People's Curse.

    @UDMan: I think there are other judges there to keep things honest... well, as honest as things get in the world of open and flagrant bribery/institutionalized corruption that is LeMons... and I mean that as a good thing.

    @CodingParadox: I pulled the grille last week to lubricate the hood latch on my '89. That ain't factory, unless they did some serious lightening when they streamlined the nose.

    @Murilee Martin: You might want to qualify that: Mercedes-Benz 560SEL parts are cheap and easy to find in BAY AREA junkyards. Incidentally, now is a good time for Northern Californian scroungers to reap the benefits of the cocaine-fueled excesses of the '80s-- other than the evergreen Porsche 911SC, any car that a yuppie bought during the Reagan years has lost enough value to be LeMons fodder.

    Change "sheets" to "seats", and I think it aptly sums up the experience of driving into a wall at speed.

    We did this, on a smaller scale, to hold a rusted-together Harley chain on a welded-together bicycle.


    Then the welds gave out on the bracket the cog was on, but the chain stayed on anyway, as long as you left the chain alone.
