The engine has a claimed 400 horses, feeding a modified Audi transaxle… but, sadly, it appears that only two of the wheels are being driven. We can't help but think that it would have been more fun to put some kind of Big Daddy Roth-style bubble-canopy body on a setup like this, but the world prefers Lambos!

<![CDATA[ Pontiac G8 ST <s>El Camino</s> To Get Direct-Inject V6 ]]> Sources at GM are beginning to whisper that the 2010 Pontiac G8 El Camino Pontiac G8 ST will be getting a version of the direct injection V6 present in the Cadillac CTS. First to tell us a two-engine plan for the new El Camino G8 ST was a real possibility was Pontiac marketing director Craig Bierley, who told us the option was "absolutely on the table." Now Edmunds' site always with the exclusive Inside Line on happenings at the General claims it's more than likely not just a possibility, but a reality.

Jalopnik Snap Judgment: When we speculated on the success of the Pontiac G8 ST with only a big honkin' 361 HP V8, we wondered aloud if a V6 option might not make a lot of sense. Given the disintegration of the full size truck market, and a largely unserved compact truck market, a 3.6-liter V6-powered El Camino G8 ST could be a huge success. Is it wrong that we're almost more excited about a well designed V6 in the truck-car than the tire melting power of a V8? Note we said "almost."

<![CDATA[ Ford To Bring Mustang SVO Badge Back For 2010 With 300 HP Eco-Boosted Four-Cylinder ]]> We've now heard from a second source that Ford is readying a return to the 2010 Ford Mustang of a badge familiar to malaise-era muscle car fan-boys — the Mustang SVO. Just like the original limited edition mid-eighties Mustang was all about merging power performance with fuel efficiency — we're hearing similar rumblings on this new 'stang. We'd already heard Ford's plans for the Boss engine lineup and we already understood the new Mustang would be less V8-focused than the current Mustang's muscular lineup. We'd also heard the pony car would be receiving Ford's new silver bullet, a twin-turbocharged engine equipped with their new EcoBoost technology. What we hadn't heard was what the boys over at Garage419 today claim — that it'll be a four-banger capable of hitting 300 HP and this newly-badged 'stang will be lighter than the GT by 500 lbs. Holy game-changer, Batman!

We're told G419's source is pretty good, and since we'd heard something about Ford's strategy when it comes to these new engines from a reliable source. Mostly because we think we know who their source is — and since if he's who we think he is, he knows something about the high-performance side of Ford. One thing we're hoping is that this won't nix our desires to see the EcoBoost V6 under the hood. Because if there's one thing we like more than more power, it's not having to pay an arm and a leg at the gas pump for it. [via Garage419]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro Showing Off Best Shots Yet Of DI V6 Engine? ]]> You may have been thinking General Motors has timed their muscle car revival all wrong, what with the 2010 Chevy Camaro coming out just as gas hits $51 per gallon. But see that's just what they want — to make driving this car an indulgence. And why wouldn't it be? Especially as it now appears that although the V8-engined 2010 Camaro SS may be getting all the attention, the V6 is going to pack quite a punch as well. These new shots from the forum fan-boys looking beyond the F-body at Camaro5 give us the clearest look yet under the hood of the six-cylinder model. But this does not appear to be your grandpa's engine.

Look closely at the throttle-body size and shape and the bolts holding it on, the three fluid reservoirs in the same locations, all cues that this is indeed the glorious direct-injection V6. That means about 300 HP, the same sort of power Ford gets from the V8 Mustang GT. And look, they've even moved the battery out of the engine bay, likely mounting it in the trunk like the Pontiac G8. All in all it looks like just the thing for the indulgence-minded muscle car buyer.

<![CDATA[ Hot Hatch Showdown ]]> With auto show season officially, mercilessly and thankfully over, the Jalopnik Fantasy Garage stands to be full in just six weeks. A short time by any standard, but especially so when distilling over a hundred years of automotive excellence into just 50 vehicles. Two weeks ago saw the induction of the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham, a car so finely crafted only a communist would disapprove. In this week's edition, we switch gears entirely. Compact, lightweight automobile construction, responsive suspension, spicy engine and a slick manual transmission. It's a simple formula which, if done properly, not only results in a car with character, but one which transcends the bottom-of-the-barrel genre and becomes something of legend, something which can ascend to the level of fantasy. This week, we examine the hot hatch.

Here's the deal, it's going to be a knock down, drag out fight with no elimination rounds, no brackets, no BS — a winner takes all match up between four of the most remarkable hot hatches ever to be tossed around a corner with glee. And in this fight, we'll let age go before beauty.

1963 Mini Cooper S
Arguably the very first hot hatch, despite its lack of said hatch, the Mini itself was a revolutionary leap forward in car design for post-war Britain. When notable F1 race car designer John Cooper approached the legendary designer of the Mini about a higher performance edition, Alec Issigonis thought the idea unacceptable, this was a working mans car after all, not a race car. Undaunted, Cooper went above his head and received the blessing of BMC directly for the project. 1961 saw the first high performance Mini Cooper but it grew into its skin in 1963 when a 1071cc short-stroke, four-cylinder replaced the long-stroke 997cc engine. The '63 Mini Cooper S was a fantastic performer with up to 70 HP from the tiny engine. To say the handling of the Mini Cooper S is the stuff of legend is something of an understatement - how many other compact cars can claim David-versus-Goliath-like wins at Monte Carlo over cars many times its size and power?
Volkswagen-Golf-GTI.jpg
1976 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The Mk1 Golf GTI is spoken about in hushed tones and with quiet reverence among fans of the econobox-turned-road-racer. The GTi was a breath of fresh air in a stagnant, malaise-mandated European market. The Golf was a handsome design to begin with, penned in the workshops of Guigiaro, and sporting a 1.5L four cylinder, the GTI got interesting upgrades that took it from everyman transporter to corner carving joy buzzer. Chief among the upgrades was one of the first entry market applications of fuel injection, wider track and tires, uprated anti-roll bars and stiffer springs, along with that famous red-rimmed grille. The Golf was rebadged as the Rabbit and produced in Pennsylvania for the 1978 model year, making it the first domestically produced European car in history. A GTI version followed for the US market in 1983. Though there aren't any Monte Carlo wins under its belt, few cars did as much to beat back the 'car as appliance' mindset which pervaded the '80s era auto industry, and the hot hatch survives today in large part due to it's existence.
1986-Dodge-Omni-GLHS.jpg
1986 Dodge Omni GLH-S
Though Carroll Shelby is better known for his involvement in cars like the Cobra 427, Daytona, and Mustang, it's nut job projects like the GLHS that should really be putting him into the Automotive Hall of Fame. The 1985 Dodge Omni GLH was a bonkers car to begin with, starting with the turbo-four out of the Shelby Charger, but Carroll took the last 500 of the Omni GLH and added some more. Goes Like Hell - Somemore, a name only a speed crazed Texan could come up with, was apt. The already potent, for '85, Chrysler turbo 2.2L four was upgraded with an intercooler, prototype fuel rail and remapped fuel delivery curve and delivered 175 HP and 174 lb/ft of torque. The suspension gained Koni adjustable shocks up front and coilovers in the rear, and some sticky tires on custom wheels. Our favorite modification is a sticker on the speedometer hailing the possibility of 135 mph - it just has such a smirk inducing quality to it. All that added together to produce a real street burner. The GLH-S would do 0-60 in 6.5 ticks and run up to 130 mph. It takes a certain kind of mad man to make a Simca designed econobox run with a Corvette.
2003-renault-clio-v6.jpg
2003 Renault Clio V6
Not many cars can make the claim to fame of being one of the ten Jeremy Clarkson would place in his personal fantasy garage. The Renault Clio V6 Renault Sport is an example of what happens when madness reaches its inevitable end. Yes, the DS is a beautiful automotive achievement and the CS has a nearly magical suspension, but this Renault may be the most impressive example ever of the French passion for the automobile. For those who have never seen a Clio in person, it is not a large or imposing car, not by any stretch of the imagination. Somewhere the bean counters fell asleep and the batshit crazy idea of dropping a V6 into the back seat of an econo-car slipped by, and the world is a better place for it. The 255 HP naturally aspirated V6 from a Renault Laguna motivates the Clio from just behind the drivers seat and spills its beautiful music into the open air. 0-60 comes in a quick 5.6 seconds and the car tops out at 153 MPH. Bonkers. Sure it loses pretty much all of its utility as a hatchback, the turning circle is atrocious, it's expensive, and it gulps fuel, but the insanity excuses all of that.

So there you have it, four cars from four decades, each with its own character and achievements. However, there can be only one. We know there will be rants over cars not included in this poll as the hot hatch has been a stalwart of automotive affection for a long time, but these are the four today. So what will it be? The British bulldog, the sharp steering German, a bold and brash American, or proof of France's sporting chops? Have at it folks.

<![CDATA[ Chicago Auto Show: 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, Three Varieties of Boring ]]> In case you were wondering, Mitsubishi did bust out a trio of updated Galants on Thursday, and we were monumentally underwhelmed. The Galant Sport, Galant Sport V6, and the Galant Ralliart all took a bow. The cars are available with a mix and match of the 2.4 L 4 cyl MiVEC, 3.8 L V6, and 3.8L V6 equipped with MiVEC, traction control, and Nav system as well as external indicators of the various performance levels.

Though the outside is iffy, the insides aren't bad, and the sound system choices are respectable, with a 360W Rockford Acoustics designed 8 speaker system, 7" touchscreen, and 6 months of free Sirius radio. We don't want to bust on the Galants too much because that would be mean, but at this point, prettying up the Galant is like putting lipstick on a pig. In case you were wondering why there are only pics of two cars, we're assuming the Galant Sport (sans V6) would have put the gathered masses to sleep.

<![CDATA[ First 2009 Chevy Camaro Engine Bay Photos, Also With Motion Blur ]]> Well, it's certainly been raining spy photos of the 2009 Chevy Camaro around these parts this week, isn't it? First it was our first set of interior photos of the new Camaro, and then word last night Chevy's new two-door man-o-war was making its way into LA. Our super-secret sources have snapped some more blurry camera phone shots for us of Chevy's new muscle car and for the first time we're able to take a look at the engine bay of the new RWD Aussie mullet-master. Unfortunately, it's only housing an engine with a 6 in it rather than a big ol' V8, but beggars can't be choosers. We're assuming that's the 3.6-liter that's currently found in the Pontiac G8. In addition to the engine pr0n, we've also got a hot shot of interior shots — with a little bit more detail than before. So what can we now say conclusively? Well, we're liking the door panels and the lighting on the center stack is helping to make things look a little bit less plastic-y. And check out that halo of light around the tach and speedo! And oh yes, it appears the Camaro will have OnStar.

Remember to check out our full Muscle Car Wars coverage!

<![CDATA[ Audi to Bring Forced Induction V6 Back to the S4? ]]> Sure, Audi's 4.2-liter V8 is an engine for the ages, but some purists cried foul when that eight-snogger became the default powerplant for the S4. Wasn't forced induction an Audi hallmark? Time marches on, and word from Fourtitude is that Audi may be reconsidering the S4's eightness. Insiders say Audi's been testing a mechanically aspirated engine on Germany"s Nürburgring, though are split on what type is is. Some say turbos, some say kompressor, and a vocal few say Audi's going to use VW's twincharger technology to combine the two in one batshit version of the 3.0-liter V6. Whatever it is, it appears Audi's planning an assault on the BMW 335i, with more than 300 horsepower from this new powerplant, whatever it is, while adding a few points to its fleet mileage average. <![CDATA[ 1991 Taurus SHO ]]> While trolling the aisles at my local self-service junkyard a while back, I caught a glimpse of a really cool-looking engine in my peripheral vision. "Whoa! What was that?" I thought, backtracking to take a look. And whaddya know, it was a good ol' early-90s Taurus SHO.

SHO_Taurus_Side.jpg And the engine was more or less complete, too. You don't see a whole lot of these in the junkyard, and I admit that thoughts of a sleeper government-issue, refrigerator-white Taurus (or, better yet, Sable) had me tempted to grab that little 220-horse DOHC Yamaha beauty. Imagine the fun of torque-steering your way into trouble, back out of it, and then lurching back into trouble... and that's just getting out of your driveway! I ended up passing on this engine, since of course I need to save my pennies for my Econoline Dekotora project. But still, good to know it's possible to do a junkyard-swap sleeper Taurus.

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Sedan - In Detail ]]> Late last night, the embargo doors on the 2008 Honda Accord were blown open and we gave you a first-look and first-dump of all the pictures and press info we had of the new-for-2008 model of the Accord. Now it's time to dig a bit deeper and take a look at both the sedan and the coupe in a bit more detail — and we're starting with the four-door. The Honda Accord sedan's become all grown-up over the years — but we don't mean in terms of build quality and dependability. The Accord long ago moved up from plucky little upstart to the benchmark by which other automakers measure their own mid-sized sedans. No, we actually mean that no longer will other automakers be able to use them as the mid-size benchmark — because the Accord four-door's no longer a mid-size. Yup, that's correct, the Accord's now moving from the EPA's "mid-size" category into the EPA's "large sedan" classification. But that's not the only place the Accord's movin' on up.

It's also moving on up in engine size — the new V6 gets a half liter more, moving up to a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with 273 HP at 6,200 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm with a 5-speed slushbox. The new engine also introduces Honda's next-gen Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology to give the new Accord four-door a purported EPA City/Highway fuel economy of 19/29 mpg. We'll hopefully get a chance to see if those numbers actually match up on the V6.

The in-line four-cylinder comes in two flavors for the sedan — a standard 200-horsepower 2.4-liter engine is standard in the Accord Sedan EX, EX-L with a purported 21/31 mpg and a 180-hp version of the same capacity engine in the LX and LX-P with a purported 21/31 with the auto tranny and 22/31 with the manny tranny.

On the safety front the Accord's got kind of a cool marketing feature — there are no optional accessories. Everything from side-curtain airbags to 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and tire pressure monitoring system are all included. Not too shabby of an idea if you ask us.

As far as the trim — there's a few different "levels" to choose from with an interior benefiting from a redesign of the center console stack and the addition of a nav wheel that's being described as "nothing like the iDrive":

• LX and LX Premium (LX-P) trim levels are powered by a 2.4-liter, 180-hp four-cylinder i-VTEC engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.
• EX and EX-L trim levels are powered by a 2.4-liter, 200-hp 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.
• The EX V-6 is powered by a 3.5-liter, SOHC, i-VTEC® V-6 engine with VCM and a 5-speed automatic transmission.
• The EX-L and EX V-6 are available with a Navigation system.

<![CDATA[ Toyota Builds Excitement in Japan With Blade Master G ]]> While Toyota's been following the US-market line of boring car buyers into a vegetative state, then taking their money, in Japan they're playing mix-and-match with stuff in their parts bin to quicken buyers' collective pulse. In Japan, Toyota's offering a hotted-up version of its Blade hatch — itself a sportier variant of the Corolla-based Auris hatch. Removing the Blade's standard 2.4-liter four, ToMoCo replaced it with the same 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 as powers the Lexus IS350 in the US. The result is the Blade Master G. The hot hatch produces 276 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. The engine swap puts an modest extra 176 lbs on the Blade's front section, which Winding Road surmises will likely give it the nose of a 1989 Barolo Monprivato, though not quite in those terms. A six-speed sequential auto with paddle shifters, 17-inch alloys and a deeper-inset grille complete the package. Nodding off is likely not an option. [Winding Road]

These shots come from a couple of vacationers in Cape Cod drafted into the spy photo-snapping army of Brenda Priddy. We've still no idea what the output of the V6 will be, but we're expecting it to be a 3.5-liter V6 with about 270-horsepower.

UPDATE:We've now got the trifecta — some spy shots of the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe below spotted near the Ohio factory!

<![CDATA[ New VQ Review: Nissan Adds Power, Fuel Economy to V6s ]]> nissan_vq.jpg

We've been fans of Nissan's torquey VQ-series V6s from the first time we slid behind the wheel of a 350Z, and subsequently, when we accidentally lit up the front meats of a Maxima in view of local law enforcement patroling a school zone (yeah, that ended well). Now, the company says it's rejiggering its VQ sto get better fuel economy and higher performance — 300 hp (a 20-hp improvement over the current most powerful version). The new engines, which will peak at 7,000 rpm (over 6,500 currently), will be dubbed "high response" and show up first — in 3.5-liter guise — in the 2007 Infiniti G35.

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Poll: Does the V8 Make the Lincoln? ]]>

With FoMoCo harshing Town Car—buyers' mellow by announcing it would not put a V8 in its upcoming Lincoln MKS flagship for cost reasons, critics have lashed out. Despite talk that the most upscale of the top-hat's sedans will get a twin-turbo V6 producing close to 400 hp, many still see the lack of a V8 option as a fatal flaw for an American luxury sedan. Others say what's good for European carmakers is certainly good for the Linc. What say you, gentle readers of manifold opinion; is a V6 a death blow or a non-issue?

According to Edmunds Inside Line, the 2007 Lincoln Zephyr will get Ford's new, 3.5-liter Duratec 35 — the latest and most powerful in the Duratec family — which will power one in five Ford products in coming years. That'll give the entry Lincoln a power boost from 221 hp to a possible 250 hp. That engine will replace the whiny Duratec 30 in the current model (no word yet on the new engine's whininess factor). Still, Edmunds' evocation of the Vulcan V6 — last seen on the Ranger and Taurus — is just, plain adorable.

<![CDATA[ Is Dodge Working on a New V6 Hemi? ]]> 265_v6_hemi_1.jpg

Now don't get your truss out 'a wack, this is all mere conjecture. We've heard from several tipsters that Dodge is rumored to be working on a 4.0-liter V6 HEMI for the 2007 Dodge Nitro and Chrysler Pacifica. The engine would replace the company's 3.5-liter V6 workhorse. Even if the HEMI part turns out to be false, word remains that Dodge's V6 replacement will (in certain incarnations) produce an uncharacterisic 300hp and be linked to a six-speed autobox for gas-saving cog swapping. Such talk has been swirling around since early this year, but with the Detroit show coming up, we're revisiting it. Could it be the Australian 265 V6 inline six Hemi of the 1970s will live again?

<![CDATA[ More on the Shelby CS 6 Concept ]]>

In an attempt to restore (or revive?) the dignity of American six-bangers (wither, Buick GNX?), Shelby Automobiles created the CS 6 concept, which debuted at the SEMA show last month. Instead of twin turbos, however, the Shelbites turned to a Paxton supercharger to boost horsepower from around 210 to 350+. The concept highlights what can be had for a fee: the Stage 1 package ($5499) includes all cosmetic enhancements, and Stage 2 ($14,999) comes with both cosmetics and performance enhancements. Hmm, with the GT500 Mustang Shelby Cobra coming in at under $40,000 next year, will the market bear such a novelty? Maybe as a sleeper for rich, eccentric hairdressers (oh, that's cold).

<![CDATA[ More on Ford's New, Workhorse V6 ]]> ford_35_v6.jpg

Ford released a bunch of engine-geek info on the new 3.5-liter V6 that'll power a goodly portion of its new cars, particularly its crossovers like the Ford Edge and Lincoln Aviator set to appear at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Ford officials say the high-revving all-aluminum six, which will wring 250hp and 240 lb-ft of torque out of its dual-overhead cam valvetrain, will power one in five Ford vehicles by the end of the decade. Paired with a new six-speed automatic, it'll make its way into cars like the the Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego and new Lincoln sedans on the docket, and will play a pivotal role in future Ford hybrids.

<![CDATA[ Shelby Automobiles to Build 350hp V6 Mustang ]]>

The biggest Shelby news from SEMA today offered not a single opportunity to insert "pimping" into it. The company announced it's building a super-hot V6 Mustang, the CS6, which will sport a Paxton supercharger and 350+ horses. The model will finally bring some much-needed sporting cred to the V6 Mustang (pictured), long derided as a hairdresser's car, despite a relatively inspiring 210hp stock in the latest model. The company says the CS6 will "remind enthusiasts of the old GT350 — fast and strong but light on its feet." In addition to the engine mods, the CS6 will get a custom hood, brakes and 20" American Racing wheels, as well as special Shelby Automobiles badging.

<![CDATA[ New V6, V8 to Take Center Stage at FoMoCo ]]>

According to Edmunds Inside Line, Lincoln's new Aviator SUV — based on the 2004 concept of the same name (pictured) — will appear next year with a six-speed automatic and a new, 3.5-liter V6 producing 245hp. The new powerplant will also supplant the weak mill in today's Ford Five Hundred (Mercury Montego), serve Ford's new minivans and crossovers to the white-line gods, and power Lincoln's two new sedans — an LS replacement and a longer-wheelbase flagship.

(All the cars are or will be based on the Volvo P3 platform — known to Fordies as D3 — which also underpins the Volvo S60, S80 and XC90). What's more, many of those cars will gain a new 4.4-liter V8 as an option. Despite being the same size as a Jaguar motor, the new eight will be a variant of the Yamaha-sourced engine in the XC90 V8. No word on fuel-saving measures such as variable displacement on the eight, but we'd be surprised as hell if it didn't have it.
