Unbelievable. Dunno about USAirways, but had this been a United flight one of the passengers could've listened in on all of this, which for me at least, would have been reassuring. #planelopnik
@Peter Orosz: I'm a big fan of his. Here's another VF article detailing a mid-air collision over the Amazon that brought down an airliner. Compelling, chain-of-events-leading-to-disaster story, all of which is told in WL's richly detailed style.
and he was also considering going to teterboro was probably testing the craft to see if the engines would hold for the 4 mile dive flight to teterboro. when he realized it wasn't possible he opened flaps to slow down air flow and create resistance which would help maintain craft rigidity and slow the plane down for a smooth water landing. also allowed him to choose his preferred entry angle (notice the slight nose in descent?) so that the landing would not cause water to bottom out on the plane and submerge it.
@vdiddy210: hm that's a possibility. he did slow that vertical speed nicely in the last 200 ft, i calculated it to about 800 ft/min... kinda rough but better than 2000 haha
Amazing, he was so calm. What a pilot, seems like the flight officer didn't panic either. Great work to save all those lives (and their own). #planelopnik
The crew coordination between the flight crew and the work done by ATC are spot on. It goes to show you that commercial aviation isn't just about delays, the TSA and peanuts. Dedication to safety, training, and good maintenance are key focuses of any airline and account for a good bit of what you see in the ticket price. #planelopnik
That is amazing. Good find. Additionally, you can listen to Garrison Keillor's musical tribute to Chesley Sullenberger III et al. The rhyming is a bit tortured, but he does manage to name the entire crew. Pretty fun.
@powermatic: Awesome. Forget about bugattatra. Don't know what his issue is. Clearly he has no sense of class. Thanks for sharing it. I only get to hear the show once in a very rare while. Seeing Garrison Keillor live at the local back-from-the-ruins theater was a great experience. Reading The Book of Guys an eye-opening experience. And listening to Dusty and Lefty is a gut-busting experience. #planelopnik
@bugattatra: Strong words about a mild-mannered midwestern comic writer. Are you sure you're not confusing him with Michael Moore? Regardless, I hope you've talked to your doctor lately about high blood pressure medication. Cause with anger like that, you're sure to have some blood boilin' issues.
As for me, I'll continue to tune in for stories of Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. #planelopnik
P.S. I'm a midwesterner too - born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, spent a lot of time in Wisconsin and Minnesota growing up. I have a deep love and appreciation for middle America, but I cannot stand PHC. #planelopnik
@bugattatra: Welp, you know what they say about arguing on the internet... I'm gonna go ahead and like PHC - along with all the other people who have made it arguably more famous than Car Talk and the others you referenced... And I'll continue to laugh out loud while reading Keillor's books. I welcome you to enjoy all the rest of the fine programming you can find. #planelopnik
@bugattatra: No sweat. In my NPR listening career, I've gone from steady PCH, to never PCH (too many fart jokes, an audience way-too-primed to laugh at anything) to now an occasional listen if I'm in the shop. I just happened to hear this 'song' at the peak of Sulley Fever, and thought it was clever-and I did like how he named everyone involved. I'm still there for Click 'n Clack, and Wait Wait though-that's some funny shit. #planelopnik
@MrHowser: Training is intense. My wife worked as an EMT in Boston for a couple of years and wow.... her ability to control stress in her voice was insane.
When our roommate OD'd on heroin in the bathroom and the Cambridge paramedics showed up she was all "gentlemen, we have a 23 year old male with an alleged history of IV drug use. breathing is blah blah blah and pulse is blah blah blah. his girlfriend says he has a history of IV drug use..." Her ability to become a robot in stressful situations is/was surreal. Good to know she'll stay cool when I drop to the floor with a heart attack.
I can only imagine the sort of mad skillz you pick up from decades of flying frickin' airliners.
Scully is amazing, but let's not forget to give credit to the aviation world for training people like him so well in the first place. *hat tip* #planelopnik
Somebody give that NY air traffic controller some love too. Wow. Just wow.
Also, where can I buy my Cap'n Sully Patron Saint of Vehicular Safety bobble head for my dashboard? Preferably with a hula skirt. I expect to see one at JC Whitney any day now. #planelopnik
my pc is too slow to watch it. If I want a disabled veteran, I could afford a nice computer. Jalopnik give thanks to veterans..they just forgot thats all. #planelopnik
