after clicking through everything... i must say i love the VWs best... whether air-cooled and rear engined or not... they ALL have 3-wheel on the ground pics....
other than that.. i love the "i lift my leg at yooo" pics...
i hope my summit will find its way in to LeMons someday soon..... #24hoursoflemonstexas
ARG. I hate the fact that I can't view these full size and be able to look through them. I agree with Bustedknuckles, we need to figure out a way to upload a torrent of this gallery. If not all of the Uber Galleries. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@SkyHawkMkIV: Doesn't someone need to host the complete .zip file of all the images somewhere in order to get a torrent going on it? My VPS host charges for mondo bandwidth use and I'm pretty sure Gawker IT won't go for it, but I'm into the torrent idea if the bandwidth issue can be sorted. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@Murilee Martin: Yea, or leave your computer on for a while... a long while. If you want, we can host the zip file for a little bit. #24hoursoflemonstexas
@Shamoononon: I shave my legs.: Thing is, for a torrent to work well it needs to be on many machines. Not sure if we have sufficient hip-to-torrents LeMons fans to make that happen.
In any case, I'll always get the original photos of any team's car to the team members. If you're on a LeMons team, just email and request the photos of your racer in action. #24hoursoflemonstexas
Dammit - zip these goddamned pictures into a big file and upload it as a Torrent file that we can all share. I'd love to put these pictures in high resolution onto my media server ... please? #24hoursoflemonstexas
See, if it weren't for Jalopnik I wouldn't know about LeMons, which is a hilarious idea. I actually knew about Le Mans, though I don't recall how - maybe from "Mistral's Daughter" by Judith Krantz? Like I said, everything I know about cars...etc. etc. That's a gorgeous photo up top, btw.
@RachelSklar: Perhaps the 1971 film, titled LeMans? Second thought, I doubt you've seen it, and I don't mean that in a sexist way (for once), it's just... mostly engine sounds for a few hours... glorious, glorious engines, but still, only car lovers really want to watch it. Anyway, you want yourself a LeMons race team, and we can probably make it happen.
@Kelster: Heart-click for that description. Mine isn't quite as bad as a gas engine running on diesel; it's more like a gas engine running on E-85, with worn-out breaker points, a clogged fuel filter, and bad rings on two cylinders.
It was a great race, there were about 1000 screaming fans watching those last few laps..It was too bad that Big Sausage tossed it off on the last lap, we'd of loved to beat them in a straight up fight...
@Dhillaz 2.0: Most teams spend about $2000 on the car itself (with roll cage cost being the biggest single item; a lot depends on roll cage kit availability), and personal safety gear ends up being around another $500 per driver (got to have a good Nomex suit, no motorcycle helmets allowed).
@Dhillaz 2.0: Then there's the cost of tires, brake pads, fuel, etc. Most teams are using 200-treadwear tires that cost about 100 bucks apiece, and a weekend of racing will usually eat up some rubber. Cars will burn up quite a bit of gas, and on top of that there's tow-vehicle fuel, motel costs, etc.
@Murilee Martin: Damn, that's the answer I was hoping not to hear.
Safety is pretty expensive! I suppose you can share. What's the difference between motorcycle helmets and racing ones? I would've thought motorcycle helmets need to take more of a bashing.
@Dhillaz 2.0: We did our budget, and the stuff that went into the car (cage, tires, theme, assorted parts) was around $3500.
Of course, we started with a really awful car that didn't start and had some suspension damage, so if you're clever you could get that down closer to $2k.
Entry Fees for a 5 man team were $1000 total. Fire gear is about $500.
Plus, there's the cost of logistics of the race: gas to tow, food, lodging, etc.
The scary part is, this is some of the cheapest "real" racing you can do.
@Murilee Martin: Yeah, we had NADAguides.com pay for our registration fees, we borrowed a seat and harness.
It's actually a great opportunity if you have a really distinctive looking car, as people will take lots of pictures of it, so the sponsors get a lot of exposure.
@Murilee Martin, @Mad_Science: Thanks for the info guys, I guess my only hope is to gather two friends and start some sort of comic car-based television programme.

@Mad_Science: Without having ever met you, but having remembered that your father took photos on prior lemons, I'm goning to venture you are one of the Odell's. Even if I am wrong, kudos for getting to participate.

@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet: I'm really not ashamed anymore..... that photo is me, serving out a penalty. I had to get lunch for the infield fire brigade.... and yes, the threw a yellow flag so I could bring it to them, thus compounding my humiliation...
@UDMan: I thought you took it well and with good humor. More fun than just getting a time out in a penalty box, anyhow.
In fact, let me compliment you again for putting together such a great team, and pulling off what has to be one of the most improbable feats with that Corvair. Who knew it could be that bulletproof?
Not to mention your generosity in sharing your BBQ with Chard Beef and all the other teams.
@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet: Hmmm...does this comply with the new rule about exhuasts? 3.24 I believe? Even if it does meet the letter of the law, somehow I feel it flies in the face of the spirit. But then, it does look damn cool.
@mechimike: Actually we were just trying to keep hot exhausts away from fuel tanks and lines. I guess the roof-mount works....just watch where you lean....
@Ambiguously Unfunny Serial Killer: Funny (you never cease to amaze me). The river is white water.....very well known for rafting....so kayak races are pretty wild.
@Ambiguously Unfunny Serial Killer: You'd have a blast. Not a great spectator sport though. You have to find a corner on the course where you can see racers coming and going. I've done that or just hang out in the pits.
@Ambiguously Unfunny Serial Killer: Rain is great! It means you can get sideways without chewing up your tires. Big empty parking lot + rain = Skidpad.
@Murilee Martin: Which, for all intents and purposes, is about as close as the Nawlins race. Sadface. How the hell am I supposed to hug Loverman against his will if I can't make it to a race?

My favourites have to be the white/red/blue BMW 2002, Burberry Escort and of course Mr. Bean's car.
Out of curiosity: roughly how much is the total cost of having a LeMons team (excluding BS)?

@mechimike: I was told it was an homage to Carlson, who ran like this in a desert race or the Panamerica. The other SAAB ran a similar rig.
But what's even cooler was the totally homemade hoopty header.
