I take personal pride in identifying and referencing Skodas and Trabants in an Eastern-European sourced post-cold war gay porno from Bel Ami (titled "Lucky Lucas", FYI). Here is the lead-in to the review that I wrote (note the date!) SAFE FOR WORK/MIXED COMPANY:
Car Culture... Eastern-European Style 7/7/2003
"What is it about young guys, cars, and sex? The combination just goes together so well! OK, so in this DVD they are driving Skodas, Trabants, and Minis, instead of Integras and Civics, but Lukas and his buds are definitely into cars... and [redacted]!... "
Since the opening up of the former Eastern bloc countries, the gay porn producers are taking full advantage of the available handsome Caucasian guys raised in a culture less hung up about guy-on-guy sex for money, whether gay or straight in private life.
Many old cold-war structures are left behind in all their griminess, and I have more than one modern plot-laden gay porno set in a gulag-type prison, and another in a large vacant factory space (don't know if they made tractors...)
I was going to buy this book, but then Murilee called the Hillman Imp "wretched." As a Rootes Group enthusiast, I'm easily offended... I guess I'll never be able to learn about Soviet cars now, because mean ol' Murilee doesn't see the beauty in a tiny British Corvair with a Coventry Climax engine.
Perhaps I will add this to my list after I've read my copy of Mickey Thompson: The Fast Life And Tragic Death of a Racing Legend that showed up in my mailbox today.
There are way too many Ladas on Finnish roads even today. You really can not own a Lada and not be a communist. It simply isn't possible.
My grandfather had had a Moskvich a long time ago. My dad tells me about it sometimes in the sauna. The door panels were filled with hay. Also, the pistons and cylinders had varying diameters so every spare piston made had to be specially built just for that particular cylinder.
In Finland we have a saying about Russian production and engineering: "Big land, big tolerances."
I had been eying this book at the local Borders and Motor Books near Trafalgar Square, London (Motor Books is worth a review of its own, a whole book store devoted to things with engines.) When I saw you were going to review it I gave in and blew the £30. This is a fabulous book, the pictures are high quality and the text really educates you on an area of car-dom most of us will never see let alone hear about. For those in the UK, there is a nice description of Lada sales in Britain and even includes British Lada jokes. Of special interest to the Jalopnik crew are the sheer number of car based pickups. Finally, my favourites were the 40's cars with 4x4 chassis' and the Packard look a like that could ford 550mm of water! A true indicator of Soviet road building.
Murilee, you filthy socialist, you've now convinced me to partake of capitalism, and head to my nearest Chapters in search of this book.
I'm not sure why, but that Moskvich ad really made me laugh. "MOSKVICH are good whichever way you look at them"
With the popularity of Engrish ads, I'm surprised nobody's spent the time to find similarly amusing Russian-English ads. Maybe we could call it Hinglitch?
If I am not imagining things, the UK often form sentences treating a corporate brand or identity as a third-person plural, unlike the North Americans' third-person singular.
e.g. "Mercedes have many exciting new models this year" (UK), as opposed to "Mercedes has many exciting new models this year" (US/CAN).
@Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: Nope, you're absolutely right. I actually tend to use third-person plural myself. I think it's the fact that it just seems so Russian... and the print looks like it was done with stick-on letters or something.
@Tomsk exists to f*ck with your mind: Yeah, the only reason I didn't put the video in the post is that the Hamsters then put a big VIDEO button on the main image before the jump.

Still, racing Imps had around 130 horses from 998cc. What's not to like about that?

I wonder if the wife will notice a charge to Amazon.com?
Or I could just take Murilee's fine advice and start dropping hints. That might be better for the marriage.
Great book review, MM!
