Can someone tell me how a transmission would work in this setup? How many does one need for a two engined car?

Citroen did this a long time ago with a 2CV. I doubt this VW is as capable in sand dunes.

@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet: Forgot about that! Alfa Romeo (actually Scuderia Ferrari) made one for the race track in the '30s... the Bimotore. Twin I-8s! Fast, but destroyed tires.

There's a man who leads a life of danger
And every tool he needs, can't find at Grainger
    With every swap he makes
    It's another chance we take
Odds are we won't live to see tomorrow

    See Croatian man
    See Croatian man
    He's swappin' in a V6
And he'll take away the lame

The problem with twin-engine setups is the power balance. If the engines aren't balanced exactly, the one engine will be a drag on the other. It has been done properly but computer controls are required and thottle-by-wire to at least one of the engines. Just ask TV Tommy Ivo.

If they did this right, they beat the Rinspeed E2 to the punch.

    Stay with me here.

In "Commuting" mode, you only start one engine. You don't need both engines in traffice, so why waste the fuel?

In "Full Hoon" mode, you start the other engine. Twice the power on the open road.

Yup, Rinspeed is gonna be pissed.

@engineerd invented the race car: I've been looking to do this with my Prius, except that the "Commuting" engine will be the same one I've been using, and the "Full Hoon Mode" will include maybe some kind of Italian in the back seat.

Think about it: the Toyota Prius is faster, from zero to seven miles per hour, than a Lamborghini Murciélago. But then, if the Toyota Prius becomes a Lamborghini Murciélago at seven miles per hour, you should be able to beat both all the time!

    Really?

What kind of Italian are you gonna put in the back seat?

A small one like, say, Danny Devito?

Or maybe a big one like say Bruno Sanmartino?

Me, personally, I'd prefer an Italian like this in the back seat:

    That's Giorgia Palmas BTW.

@A Strolling Lucida G Luxury Joyful Player, back by popular demand!: I keep waiting for someone to put a big, gas guzzling engine in a Prius. Your idea takes the cake. You get the economy of the original powertrain for 'round town and full hoon mode for the ultimate sleeper.

@engineerd invented the race car: My only limitations are money and know-how. Between Caminoization, convertiblization, and Ultimate Sleeper Potential, this one is simultaneously by far the most expensive, difficult, and awesome.

    At least I have determination.

    Impressive, to say the least....

Kind of half-assed at the same time. I mean one key doesn't start both engines? When I build twin-engined VWs I always synchronize the starters so they run off one ignition.
