Based on the video I saw the other day, GT5's notion of car damage is to have bumpers hanging loose and doors flying open. I haven't even seen any evidence that paint gets scratch.
This is basically the kind of car damage we've been getting in the Grand Theft Auto series for years. And doors don't even fly open that easily, and when they do they should get torn free fairly easily, they don't hang on like the hinges are made of titanium.
Does anyone remember Viper Racing on the PC from the mid-90s? You could crumble your car into a little ball if you hit it enough times.
Nevertheless, despite excessively glossy cars, this is by far the nicest looking driving game out there.
I'm just going to stick with Scarface. They play it almost every day around here. Yesterday I stole two cars, remodeled the house twice- and had a shoot out in Miami Beach, behind a Spanish restaurant. The sad thing is- I still have six tons of powder to distribute and the local gangsters ruined my drive-in movie theatre. I can't wait for that bill. And then there's the boats- they say the two happiest days in a boat owner's life are when he buys the boat and when he sells the boat. I'm in for a good week I guess.
Same old Polyphony. "Heres the release date. Just kidding. No I'm serious this time. Oh got you again." And we just keep falling for it like the co-dependent little car/video game geeks that we are. Im not gonna believe it is out until it is in my PS3. And still I'm gonna be a skeptical until I buy my first car and race it. Damn you Polyphony. I just cant let you keep breaking my heart.
and just like that, I've got The Cardigans stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
Yeah, I'm a GT2 old-timer and haven't played since college, but these images are certainly tempting me to get a gaming console. These pics are stunning.
@Flippy Pumpboom: I've always laughed about how the acronym for Duke Nukem Forever is DNF, which, as we know from racing, stands for something else entirely.
I do not consider damage model to be appropriate in a SERIOUS simulation (yet, at least). A lot more energy has to be put into damage modeling than actual physical modeling. So what's the point?
@Flippy Pumpboom: I can't confirm this, so don't everybody go Kotaku on Polyphony's asses. But yeah, I want to flip some damn SUVs!
You've never been able to flip a car. I did take that Ford super car concept on the huge oval, got it up to something like 250mph, and lost control. At which point the wonky physics took over and I did about 50 360's. The damn thing was traveling like a frisbee down the track, it was hilarious.
Cut the Polyphony guys some slack. Kazunori Yamauchi (the producer) has been busy winning the 4 hour VLN race at the Nurburgring...
edit: Hold on... I've just realised I was at the
'ring on that day... and of the scheduled 2 hour tourist session, it was only open for 20 minutes due to events in that race and I only got a single passenger lap in...
Since when are missing bumpers and open doors considered to be crashes? I want to see some real carnage. I want to be able to re-enact that dude cutting his Enzo in half on a telephone pole.
If I can't blow out the windows and mangle my car around another car by going backwards on the track, it's not damage modelling.

Let's just hope GT5 doesn't die after 40 miles or need a recall to add some Loctite.

I thought all these sequels were one part viagra, one part heavy.

Forza 3 looks like Forza 3 screenshots, but after drooling over GT5P shots, I was disappointed by the actual product. Jagged edges everywhere.
Granted, I haven't seen Forza on its highest settings, but I have seen GT5P on the highest settings.

F1 is a glorious example of the reason damage models should keep you from driving too aggressively.
