Well, I guess everything goes in cycles. This (and a few other things) might be the start of a 20-30 year period of Toyota decline.
I hope not, but empires rise and fall. Especially when the worms of "cost control" and "planned obsolescence" begin to crawl in under the cover of "marketing on one's past reputation of quality".
As much as I am not a Toyota fan and a Domestic fanboy this isn't just a Toyota problem. Every manufacturer that mounts the spare behind the axle and under the box has this issue. I've seen Chevy's fall off after a few hundred miles. The assemblies are a joke. I've seen Ford's become so rusted the assembly has to have the gas axe taken to it. I've seen Dodges that come down half way and freeze up.
Just a stupid design but there is no place else for a full size spare. At least they make it easy to cut the assembly out and put a new one in.
Lube, lube, lube and more lube so when your spare comes down it will slide out.
@lilwillie: Say what you will, but my 15 y/o 155k mile Chevy 1500 has one of those spares on a cable deal. I don't think it was ever used until recently and it lowers and raises beautifully from the rear bumper. Actually the whole underside of the truck looks pretty good. And this is a used and abused truck from salty NW Jersey.
My '01 4Runner's rear diff. cover rusted clear thru! It was like Swiss cheese. Since the cover is welded in, the complete housing must be replaced ($1,400) to effect a pemanent repair.
My '96 Jeep Cherokee spent its entire life outside in cold weather states and its undercarriage was virtually rust-free when I sold it last summer. I guess Toyota still had to cut corners even with all cheap labor from the Sunbelt states.

I like how these kinds of threads are open opportunities for people to dish out any kind of anecdotal evidence that Toyota makes the worst vehicles in the world. "Yeah, well my neighbor had their Toyota blow up 5 minutes after they bought it!" "Well I knew a guy who bought a Toyota and the frame broke during the test drive, but he was so smug, he bought it anyway!" ad nauseum.
@grzydj: Yep. I for one will never understand the seething hatred that is spewed the moment someone says "Toyota," much more so than any other brand. Probably has something to do with the fact that they beat the pants off the Big Three for 30 years and now that Detroit's largely caught up, nobody cares because everyone else gave up on American cars after getting shat on by one too many Citations, Volares and Granadas.

"In those relatively rare cases where the rear cross-member is significantly corroded and can no longer safely support the spare tire, but the rear cross-member cannot be replaced due to excessive frame corrosion at the mounting location (e.g., if the side rails are too damaged), Toyota will develop an appropriate remedy for those vehicles on a case-by- case basis."

sounds like this is when they train the new guy on the welder
A properly contrite Japanese businessman would've seppuku'd himself by now. Toyota built themselves a gigantic reputation of stolid reliability, then built a mountain of hype on the Tundra, saying it would turn the fullsize truck market on its ear. Well, not so much - more like dropped the fullsize truck buyer on his ass.
Toyota toyota, you're going about this all wrong. This isn't frame corrosion thats happening here it's posthumous weight reduction to increase fuel economy.
We have to put a positive spin on it cause Toyota is a positive company.
@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet: I doubt that frames in warmer weather states rust much at all. Actually, it's not the temperature so much as the corrosive crust they develop in the salt zones.
@Smells_Homeless: Good thing trucks that spend time in rust states ever get moved/sold into non-rust states. And then re-sold, even. Or vice-versa. Because then this "don't fix this weakness/proclivity in all trucks" crap would be bit of a bad idea.

They must make our Midwestern salty roads saltier than those Jersey roads.
I have seen some come out fine, but the majority I have seen are fubared.

The real issue here is losing the rear brakes. Having the spare tire fall out is a problem, but not quite so disastrous.
