With that in mind, the boys over at Popular Mechanics packed their bags and boarded a midnight plane to Blighty to try one out. In a cable back to their New York HQ, they report the oil-burning 2008 Audi TT 2.0 TDI is smooth, refined and makes overtaking easy as a wiggle of your big toe. Exclusively available in the UK with a 6-speed manual, they calculated their average fuel economy during a mix of city and highway driving to be 39.1 MPG (US). That's while making 258 lb-ft and reaching a top speed of 140 MPH, mind you. Please, god of cars, bring us this beautiful torque-heavy 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Please!

<![CDATA[ Audi TT Clubsport Quattro Interior Defies Meme, Made Mit Aluminum Und Orange?! ]]> Audi's apparently taking the TT Clubsport Quattro — the same show car we spotted looking much more production-like earlier this month — to the Wörthersee Tour. That's the same Tour we could make neither heads nor tails of a few days later when Audi revealed their A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro concept. At least now we understand why we're seeing the Clubsport Quattro's exterior aluminum und shteel looking a little less concept-like and a little more prêt-à-porter, it's the interior that's got us flummoxed. Audi's thrown caution, and apparently "shteel," to the wind. The interior of the new for-show version of the TT Clubsport Quattro? It's made in that typical Audi fashion — heavy amounts of aluminum — und — und — orange? Ja, mit orange. Can you imagine what the job of vetting an Audi press release translation must be like before they go out? "Hans, that does not sound like what you think that sounds like!" "Nein, our vives demand zee TT clubsport quattro mit zee oranghe! Zis vee musht do!" Full press release below the jump reveals all.

The Audi TT clubsport quattro: Open-top driving machine with over 300 hp

* Audi presents its showcar at the Wörthersee Tour
* Speedster-like body with dynamic accents
* Racing-like engine and suspension performance

An open cockpit, an engine producing more than 220 kW (300 hp) and a host of technologies borrowed from the world of motorsports - the Audi TT clubsport quattro is an uncompromising driving machine. Audi is presenting an updated version of the spectacular showcar and sensation of 2007 at the Wörthersee Tour, the big meet for Audi and VW enthusiasts in Reifnitz (Kärnten), Austria, from May 21 to 25.

Purism at a premium level - this was the goal that the designers and engineers set themselves for the Audi TT clubsport quattro. The low windshield is extremely flat. The A-pillars are nearly invisible, making the continuous window strip appear to be a single casting. Instead of the compartment for the soft top there are two humps behind the passenger compartment - the lines of the showcar painted in Suzuka Gray, pearl effect are intensely evocative of a speedster. Mounted in front of the humps are two massive rollover bars, which together with the strong A-pillars protect the driver and passenger if the car should roll over.

The front end is dominated by the powerful single-frame grill painted in high-gloss black. Beneath the headlamps, which feature a strip of LED daytime running lights, are large air inlets covered by horizontally split black grills.

A distinctive spoiler lip optimizes downforce. When viewed from the side, the sharp contours in the sill area are every bit as striking as the boldly accentuated wheel wells, which house impressive (polished) 9x19 inch wheels shod with 255/35 tires. The track was widened by 66 millimeters (2.60 inches) versus the production TT. The rear bumper is designed as a diffuser. The fascia between the two large tailpipes of the stainless steel exhaust system emphasizes the horizontal lines and makes the car look even wider from behind.

The purist style of the exterior carries over to the interior of the Audi TT clubsport quattro. The newly designed sill area emphasizes the width of the vehicle. The driver and passenger sit in racing bucket seats that offer excellent support even in extreme driving situations - on the race track, for example.

Typical Audi: aluminum in the interior

Typical for Audi is the generous use of aluminum in the interior of the showcar. The clubsport quattro sports a high-grip version of the flat-bottomed steering wheel from the production TT with aluminum shift paddles. The door pull handle and door opener are also made of aluminum, and their cut-out appearance emphasizes the lightweight design character of the concept car. The pedals also shine with aluminum.

The second distinctive feature of the interior of the TT clubsport quattro is the color orange. Leather in this color provides bright highlights to the arm rests, the sides of the center tunnel, the backs of the bucket seats and the instrument cowl. The orange and white graphics of the instrument cluster clearly distinguishes it from its counterpart in the production model.

The TT clubsport quattro is a true sports car, and technology borrowed directly from the world of motorsports emphasizes this character. Even more power has been coaxed out of the 2.0 TFSI engine - the turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine breaks the magic 300 hp barrier. The exhaust system was designed to be particularly easy-breathing, and a powerful racing sound exudes from the oval tailpipes.

Audi high-tech: S tronic und quattro

The two-liter engine delivers its full power to an S tronic transmission. Thanks to its dual clutch, gear changes occur extremely quickly without interrupting the flow of power and thus go virtually unnoticed. The driver can change gears manually using the shift lever or the paddles on the steering wheel, or can choose a fully automatic mode. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system transfers the power to all four wheels.

The powerful brake system from the new Audi TTS provides the stopping power. Its ventilated discs measure 340 millimeters (13.39 inches) up front and 310 millimeters (12.20 inches) at the rear.

The Audi TT clubsport quattro is a purist driving machine combining the performance of a sports car with the unique design language of Audi. Small-series production of this model cannot be ruled out.

AUDI AG sold a total of 964,151 cars in 2007 and thus achieved its twelfth consecutive record year. <![CDATA[ Audi TT 2.0 TDI Quattro Announced ]]> Seems that somebody is pushing forward with more diesel cars. In this case it's the Ingolstadt jungen heeding the call with the freshly announced Audi TT 2.0 TDI Quattro. Everything Audi TT we've seen already but with added oil burning flavor for maximum enjoyment. The turbocharged four pot common rail diesel manages 170 hp at about 4,200 rpm and a healthy 258 lb.ft. or torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. That meaty power band is good for 0-100 km/h sprints in the neighborhood of 7.5 seconds - not bad for an engine good for a claimed 44 mpg. No word on US market release, but maybe if we shout loud enough they'll hear us. Gnaw on the press release below the fold

Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro

Powerful performance with maximum efficiency

Ingolstadt - Audi is once again setting standards, this time with the new
Audi TT and its TDI engine—a model that combines pure sportiness and
powerful performance with sensational efficiency. The Audi TT 2.0 TDI
Coupe quattro and Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro are the first series-
production sports cars to feature diesel engines. It's a compelling union:
The two-liter engine generates dynamic propulsion with 125 kW (170 hp)
and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque, yet the TT Coupe and TT Roadster
consume an average of only 5.3 liters and 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km
(44.38 mpg and 42.77 mpg) respectively—unparalleled in the sports car
segment.

Audi is setting the pace with this synthesis of excellent dynamism and low fuel
consumption, as it has done for many years: Since debuting in 1989 the TDI
engines from the brand with the four rings have been paving the way for the
world's most successful efficiency technology and acting as trendsetters for the
entire automobile industry. Today, these powerful, refined and highly fuel-
efficient engines represent a modern, smart take on sportiness. The run of
victories achieved by the Audi R10 TDI diesel race car at the Le Mans 24
Hours and in the American Le Mans Series are impressive evidence of the
tremendous potential of this technology.

The dynamic diesel engines from Audi exert an exciting impact not just in
racing but also in series-production models—and now indeed in a sports car.
The TT Coupe quattro with the 2.0 TDI sprints from zero to 100 km/h
(62.14 mph) in 7.5 seconds and achieves a top speed of 226 km/h
(140.43 mph). The Audi TT Roadster, likewise equipped with quattro
permanent all-wheel drive, requires only an extra tenth of a second for the
standard sprint, and continues up to a top speed of 223 km/h (138.57 mph).
Both versions serve as outstanding examples of the success of the Audi
efficiency strategy, thanks to their fuel efficiency ratings of 5.5 liters per 100 km
(42.77 mpg), a figure that corresponds to CO2 emissions of only 145 grams/km.

Powerful, refined and efficient: The 2.0 TDI

The new four-cylinder TDI engine (engine displacement = 1,968 cc) represents
a fresh take on the all-round compelling qualities of the TDI concept. Designers
of the dual-camshaft, two-liter model looked to its predecessor—the most-
produced diesel engine in the world—and expanded upon its major strengths:
driving pleasure, efficiency and refinement.

The new common rail injection system is equipped with highly modern piezo
injectors, whose eight-hole injection nozzles can perform up to five distinct
injection sequences per cycle. This fine degree of modulation creates a modest
pressure increase in the combustion chambers, resulting in a significantly
reduced noise level. The system pressure of 1,800 bar allows fuel to form a fine
dispersion, enabling precise, highly efficient combustion.

The turbocharger is also part of a new generation and operates with adjustable
vanes that allow torque to build up rapidly. The positions of swirl flaps on the
intake manifold are controlled by electric motors in order to adapt the flow of air
to the current load and engine speed. The geometry of the engine's pistons has
been modified, and the acoustics of the camshaft drive belt have been
overhauled. Just as they did in the preceding model, two balancing shafts
reduce the vibrations arising in the crankshaft drive.

The cumulative result of this progress is a high maximum engine speed of
5,000 rpm and, most importantly, improved thermodynamics in the combustion
chambers. What this means is that the engine can run on up to 60 percent
recycled exhaust that has been thoroughly cooled by the radiator. This results
in a drastic reduction in untreated NOx emissions, with the 2.0 TDI already
meeting the threshold values of the upcoming Euro 5 standard.

Dynamic road performance

The 2.0 TDI in the Audi TT Coupe and the Audi TT Roadster delivers 125 kW
(170 hp) at 4,200 rpm and sends a full 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque to the
crankshaft at engine speeds between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Operating quietly
and generating little in the way of vibration, this model delivers a hefty amount
of power at the lowest rpm levels and is highly responsive to input from the gas
pedal. Its supreme power development lends this engine its own unique,
fascinating character—that of a muscular, smart sports engine.

The Audi TT Coupe 2.0 TDI quattro easily leaves the gasoline-powered
competition behind when accelerating from a standstill. It sprints from zero to
100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 7.5 seconds and never looks back until it reaches
226 km/h (140.43 mph). The TT Roadster accelerates to 100 km/h (62.14 mph)
in 7.7 seconds and keeps going up to 223 km/h (138.57 mph).

These models—the world's first diesel sports cars—consume an average of
only 5.3 liters and 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (44.38 mpg and 42.77 mpg)
respectively, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of a mere 140 g/km and
145 g/km. In so doing, they are setting a benchmark that represents a veritable
quantum leap in the sports car segment. With the TDI engine in the TT series,
Audi once again establishes its leading role on the diesel market. The brand
with the four rings is advancing progress and starting at the top.

In keeping with the theme of sporty performance, Audi has combined its two
diesel-engine sports cars with highly effective manual six-speed transmissions
whose short lever travel allows the driver to shift quickly, easily and precisely.
The housings for these transmissions are made of lightweight, high-tech
magnesium materials. Relatively long final transmission ratios have been
employed to bring the drivetrain in line with the character of the TDI engine.

In light of their high torque values, Audi is equipping both of its new TT models
with quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The heart of this system is an
electronically controlled, hydraulically activated multi-plate clutch, which is
located in the rear of the vehicle for improved weight distribution. This clutch
generally distributes up to 85 percent of the engine power to the front axle and
15 percent to the rear axle; in extreme situations it can divert up to 100 percent
of the power to either axle.

The overall concept: An exercise in uncompromised sportiness

Consistent efforts to reduce vehicle weight are also part of the efficiency
strategy pursued by the brand with the four rings. Both sports cars are very
lightweight: the 2 + 2-seater TT Coupe weighs only about 1,370 kilograms
(3020.33 lbs) when empty, while the two-seater TT Roadster with soft top
weighs roughly 1,415 kilograms (3119.54 lbs). Underlying these low weights is
an innovative hybrid body construction developed by Audi. Front components
are made of aluminum and utilize Space Frame technology; rear components
are made of steel. This solution guarantees that the frame is as rigid as
possible and optimizes load distribution between the axles.

The Audi TT Coupe and TT Roadster are dynamic, emotion-packed sports
cars. As was the case with preceding models, these cars are impressive for
their powerful design, whose dynamic flow continues on into the interior. The
cockpit contains multiple nods to the circle motif, and the sports steering wheel
with its flat-bottomed rim fits the driver's hand like a glove. The sport seats are
deep-set, providing a sporty seated position and firm lateral support. The backs
of both rear seats fold down in the TT Coupe, making the trunk space grow
from 290 to 700 cubic liters (10.24 - 24.72 cubic ft). The Roadster (250 liters,
8.83 cubic ft) comes with a practical load-through hatch upon request.

The sports suspension likewise offers extraordinarily dynamic features. The
front suspension is pivoted on an aluminum subframe and has a wide track
measuring 1,572 millimeters (61.89 inches).

A highly precise rack-and-pinion steering system with a direct steering ratio
provides an intimate link between the driver and the road. Power steering with
servo assist, which decreases as speed increases, is generated by an
electromechanical drive that is even more efficient than a hydraulic pump.

The coil springs and shock absorbers in the four-link rear axle are situated in
separate areas. The links are also finely differentiated: The layout of the trailing
links, which absorb the propulsive and braking forces, is relatively soft to
promote a comfortable ride. The connections to the three transverse links per
wheel, on the other hand, are rigid in order to direct transverse forces into the
body with precision.

The Audi TT Coupe 2.0 TDI quattro and Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro roll
on 16-inch, cast aluminum wheels fitted with 255/55 R16 tires. Behind the
wheels are large disk brakes with pads that develop large coefficients of
friction. The ESP stabilization program supports the neutral to slight
understeering feel of the TT—the finishing touch on an overall portrait of
exciting dynamics, exhilarating driving pleasure and stability you can count on.

Audi magnetic ride, a high-tech shock-absorber system available as an option,
is an adaptive system that resolves the traditional conflict of interests between
comfort and handling. A magneto-rheological fluid circulating in the shock
absorbers changes the direction of the magnetic particles within milliseconds
when electricity is applied; this alters the overall characteristics of the fluid and,
in turn, modifies the damping characteristic. The driver can choose between
"Normal" and "Sport" programs by flipping a switch.

Equipment makes a statement of refined style

Standard equipment for both of the new TT models reflects the sporty character
and refined style of the series. Faux aluminum accents add a shine to gray
inlays and various other components in the interior. The sports steering wheel
comes with a Nappa leather cover. The climate control system (standard for the
TT Coupe) regulates heating and ventilation in response to the level of sunlight.

The driver information system and chorus audio system round out the standard
equipment.

A wide array of high-tech equipment is available as options, including a highly
modern generation of audio devices, electrically adjustable front seats, the
adaptive light dynamic cornering light system and two navigation systems with
a user interface based on the Audi MMI concept—a cut above the competition.

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: Audi TTS Coupe & Roadster Official Pics, Details ]]> We've now got the official scoop and pics of the Audi TTS Roadster & Coupe that broke through the embargo shields on Tuesday, sans that horrible watermark from Motorpasîon. Confirming what we'd heard, the Audi's will get the more potent 2.0-liter Turbo FSI four banger good for 272 horsepower. This will give them a 0-62 time between 5.4 and 5.6 seconds for the coupe and roadster, respectively. They'll go on sale in the UK sometime around mid year.

Audi TTS Roadster & Coupe

• New even higher performance version of acclaimed TT sports car available in Coupé and Roadster body styles
• Debuts at the North American International Auto Show on January 13 and is expected to open for UK order in mid-2008
• Powered by an extensively modified version of the 2.0-litre Turbo FSI petrol engine delivering 272PS and peak torque of 350Nm between 2,500 and 5,000rpm
• Coupé (manual) 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, limited 155mph top speed, 29.7mpg, Roadster 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, limited 155mph top speed, 29.3mpg
• Suspension, steering and brakes revised to complement enhanced performance
• Standard Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system for optimum handling composure

The 'S' emblem that spells extraordinary performance in the Audi range graces the TT for the first time this month in a new, even more focused version of the iconic sports car debuting at the North American International Auto Show (January 19-27). Destined for the UK in mid-2008 in both Coupé and Roadster body styles, the TTS earns its esteemed badge through the adoption of a specially developed, 272PS Turbo FSI petrol engine complemented by state-of-the-art chassis technology.

Extensive revisions to the acclaimed 2.0-litre turbo charged and directly fuel injected petrol engine that already powers the TT have enabled its power to be boosted from 200PS to 272PS and its torque from 280Nm to 350Nm, available between 2,500 and 5,000rpm. Linked to six-speed, close ratio manual transmission the enhanced unit slingshots the TTS Coupé from rest to 62mph in just 5.2 seconds, and on the Autobahn is only curtailed by its electronic limiter at 155mph. With the optional S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission acceleration times are reduced by a further two-tenths of a second in both the Coupé and Roadster.

In addition to the evocative 'S' insignia, the most extreme production TT to date highlights its capabilities from the front through newly designed bi-xenon headlamps incorporating trademark Audi LED strip daytime running lights, a redesigned front apron incorporating larger air intakes and aluminium-look door mirror housings. The profile view is enhanced by deeper side skirts and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels, which can be swapped for 19-inch alternatives at extra cost, while at the rear a revised rear bumper with - for the first time in a TT - four tailpipes protruding from its extended diffuser subtly conveys the newcomer's extra performance potential.

Inside, deep-set Alcantara and leather combination sports seats, exclusive 'S' instruments with white needles, metal pedals and special aluminium trim elements enhance the already very highly regarded sports interior.
Audi Space Frame (ASF)

Streamlined by its revolutionary lightweight Audi Space Frame aluminium and steel hybrid body shell, and pinned to the road by a comprehensively modified, quattro four-wheel-drive-equipped chassis, the new TTS has been designed to maximise the TT's inherent fun factor while retaining its safe, surefooted feel. Reworked power steering and enlarged brakes help the driver to profit fully from the exceptional performance, and to guarantee the highest degree of agility in all situations the space-age Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system is fitted as standard.

The magnetic ride system's sophisticated dampers are filled with a magnetorheological fluid containing minute magnetic particles that can be influenced by an electromagnetic field. By applying a voltage to the system's electromagnets, the viscosity of the fluid is altered by the affected magnetic particles, increasing resistance to damper movement to iron out pitch and roll when necessary, and reducing resistance when ride comfort takes precedence.
The new sports model is not only notable as the first TT to become a member of the esteemed Audi 'S quattro series', which numbers extra special models such as the 450PS S8 quattro among its ranks. Significantly, it also debuts on the tenth anniversary of the TT, the Coupé version of which became an overnight sensation following its launch in 1998.

With the aim of giving the TT an individualized and emotionally expressive look, Nothelle offers a shaply aerodynamic kit for a perfect match to the Audi original design really spicing it up.

A three-piece front spoiler as well as other front apron air intakes (Double Frames) bestow the TT an expressive face. The nothelle side sill elements give the Audi TT a much sturdier profile building up a sort of lateral muscle mass look. In back, a rear apron in special nothelle design comes with complete, perfectly integrated end pipes extending from the silencer - which is offered by nothelle in combination with the rear apron - guaranteeing a super spine-tingling sound with very distinctive rear view. Perfect to the completion of the rear, nothelle provides a 3-part rear spoiler providing extra downforce and particularly at higher speeds, a better stabilization effect. Additionally, nothelle offers a roof spoiler, excluding however the Roadster version.

Sport Suspension System
Because reduction to the center of gravity results in better agility, nothelle offers a set of sport springs. This brings TT to about a 25 mm lowering. The high-end solution in nothelle program is a coilover suspension with integrated adjustable compression and rebound settings. The driver can choose from three different shock absorbing levels. The suspension strut housing is made of high value stainless steel, with anodized suspension plates and gaskets of Teflon. The material provides for long-lasting life and offers something for the eye as well. Not a bad investment, in terms of the pleasure endowed while taking those curves quick as a flash.

Motor Performance Increase
Matching the racier look, nothelle makes available more zest for the TT motor as well. The Ratingen (Germany) -based Audi specialists help the 2.0 TFSI Motor (series-produced 200 HP) to charge forwards with four different increase performance programs. From Chip tuning (+ 40 HP, + 75 Nm) through to complete rebuild (+ 130 HP, + 120 Nm) everything is possible. Then, nothelle drops the big one: A world premiere is celebrated for the 3.2 V6 being modified through twin turbo technology. This increases performance up to 520 HP and 635 Nm and a Vmax of approx. 308 km/h turning the TT from the underdog to a Porsche-killer per se! The conversion is available for manually shifted versions as well as for TT´s with DSG-transmission (direct shift gearbox). The conversion of course includes a reinforced clutch and a specially adapted gear transmission ratio. Because on one hand the sheer power should be transmitted without causing damage, and on the other hand it should enable a full gallop of the 520 ponies.

Light Alloy wheels
The superior, distinctive and modern design of the "NOVEDRA IX" is immediately noticable, due to its' complete self-containment. The nine spokes (hence "IX") consists of a broad basic design in which a slender ridge runs into the rim flange. The sporty dynamics of this perfectly-shaped masterpiece makes every vehicle look fast even while when just standing still. These are offered in 20-inch for the Audi TT by Nothelle.

Nothelle makes available no less than four different surface finishes. For variations "silver", "white", and "black" the spokes and rim flange are polished. Trendy again particularly for white vehicles is the white finish really standing out with an individualized look.

The variation "NOVEDRA IX brillant" features an elaborate, high-polished finish available by Nothelle through special ball-polishing techniques and high-polished clearcoat. Through these processes, the wheel not only receives its own individual non-imitable look, but possesses increased durability as well. The sealing of the surface occurs through a transparent baked-on lacquer finishing process. The attractive wheels are made available from Nothelle as a set with tires in sizes 255/30-20, contributed by its' technology partners Hankook and Continental.

The Nothelle wheels, manufactured from high-grade aluminum alloy, stand out because of their minimal weight. This means reduced unsprung mass, decreased wheel tramp resulting in increased driving comfort. Over and above this, large spacing between spokes guarantees prefect cooling of the brake system. For security aspects, a point not to be underestimated.

Also optionally is the Nothelle "NOVEDRA VII SPORT" wheel in multiple-parts look available in 8.5 x 19".

<![CDATA[ Audi Clubsport Concept Could See Series Production ]]>

According to German magazine, Stern, Audi could be preparing a short-run series based on its Clubsport Quattro Concept revealed last week. The mag reports 200 units of the short-windshield Audi TT roadster models could be built. No word on how true the production version would be to the concept, which sports a 300-horsepower version of Audi's 2.0-liter TFSI four, its S-Tronic (DSG) dual-clutch gearbox, 20" wheels and ceramic brakes. Whatever happens, we'd imagine the DOT will have something to say about that windshield.

<![CDATA[ Audi Clubsport Quattro Concept ]]>

Germany's AutoBild is the first to go to press with images of Audi's newest concept model, the Clubsport Quattro. It's a take on the new TT with cues taken from the Porsche 356 Speedster of old, with chopped glass, a virtually nonexistent A-pillar and a 300-hp version of the VW/Audi 2.0-liter TFSI mill, with Audi's S-Tronic (DSG) dual-clutch box trading gears. It gets its gumption from a more copious turbocharger, and it sports carbon ceramic brakes and 20" wheels of light alloy. Designers also fitted grillework last seen propped up behind home plate. Expect Audi to reveal full details, and high-res photos, soon.

<![CDATA[ Audi's Venables Bell Provides More Evidence Of Clueless Automotive Advertising ]]>

I've been giving the keynote at a couple of interactive automotive advertising conferences over the past month — trying to give the auto ad folks a perspective from the editorial side of what's going on out here on the internet. One of the things I harp on is how it seems some advertising companies are creating creative and have absolutely no idea what's going on once the creative hits the online media. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of ad agencies who do "get it." But today I've got yet another proof for my theory that auto ad agencies are lagging behind the public relations curve — and it comes to us from the venerable ad agency of Venables Bell. They're the folks who we gently ribbed over their attempt to brand Audi as being the automaker that uses technology to enhance driving, not by getting in the way of the driver. If you'll remember, they did that by requiring their viewer to awkwardly use gimmicky DVR technology to view their 15-second GE advertising campaign rip-off commercial. So, how clueless are they about the internet? Almost six hours after I ran that post I received the following e-mail from Audi's new ad company:

Subject: New Audi TT Commercial Date: Tue, May 8, 2007 at 7:49 PM From: XXXXX XXXXX To: tips @ jalopnik.com

For their first Audi USA TV commercials, agency Venables Bell & Partners created two :15 spots for the new TT roadster and its faster dual clutch gearbox. It's one of the first times that DVR technology will be used as media. To experience this TV spot on your DVR/TiVo, press "pause" and then tap "fast forward" frame-by-frame. www.tt-truth.com

Glad to see someone was paying attention to the site before they sent that. Money well spent Audi, money well spent.

<![CDATA[ Audi Eschews Gadgets and Doohickeys for Gizmos To <s>NOT</s> Confuse You ]]>

In a backhanded nerd-slap at the competition, Audi told Jean Halliday at Advertising Age that they want luxe car buyers to know the tech stuff they've got in their cars is meant to enhance driving, not complicate it. It's part of a brand campaign being run by Venables Bell, that the highly-precise automaker's taglined "Truth in Technology." Unfortunately, Audi may have inadvertently hit themselves with that nerd-slap because they're 15-second spots with hidden content that you can only see by fast forwarding or rewinding through frame by frame on a DVR. You can't see it on TV and you can't even watch it using YouTube because there's no frame-by-frame. (Luckily, our own technology, shown above with what we're calling "a better pause button" should do the trick.) So let's get this straight, Audi wants to brand themselves with technology meant to enhance driving and not complicating it by creating a complicated commercial you need specific technology to see? Right, Venables Bell is going to be the agency of record for like what, 15 seconds maybe?

According to AutoExpress Hyundai's Kia brand is working up a new sports-car concept for this year's Frankfurt show that could go head to head with the Audi TT. It'll be a high-concept play, much like the KCV-III concept (shown) introduced in Frankfurt in 2003. It's no real surprise, considering Kia's European design boss is Peter Schreyer, from whose hand came the first-generation Bauhaus TT. The Kia counterpart is codenamed Project Snowflake, a riff on Schreyer's Audi nickname of Raindrop (must be a riot working down there). The concept will be powered by a new, turbocharged 2.0-liter, which will show up in a new hot-hatch version of Hyundai's Cee'd. Word is the concept could hit production by 2009.

If you thought the the Abt TT-R was a bit too much car — or just too much — German tuning and motorsports firm has a training set. It's the TT-Sport, and it comes in various stages of tune (for the 2.0-liter four) from 240 hp up to 300 hp. That top tuner can scurry from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds. Visually, the Sport package is less demonstrative than the TT-R's, with and aero kit comprising rear wing, skirting, bumpers twin-pipe, plus a twin-pipe rear muffler and diffuser. The result is a victory of economy over decoration. Fake chest hair, sold separately.

<![CDATA[ Abt Pupil: The Audi TT-R Tuner ]]>

German Audi tweaker, Abt Sportsline, launched its new tuner last week, the TT-R — a hotted-up version of the company's latest coupe. The range-topping model's undergone various kittings that boost the 3.2-liter VR6's power to 355 hp (supercharger, engine chip), though the company offers lesser stages for the six (310 hp) and 2.0-liter four (270 / 240 hp). Body kit, suspension tunings and 19" wheels are part of the stuff list. Trophy wife not included.

Press Release:

The new Abt TT - Comeback of the year

With the Abt TT-R Abt Sportsline celebrated the most amazing motor sport victories in the season 2002. Hardly anyone was able to beat the Abt TT-R. In nine of the ten DTM races at least one of the Abt pilots clinched a podium position, and at the end Laurent Aiello won the DTM championship in the yellow Abt TT-R. Therefore it is no wonder that the Abt team from Kempten has a special relationship with "their" TT and it is a fortunate coincidence that the second version of this sporty Audi model just appears on the market when the family enterprise celebrates its 110th company anniversary. At the same time, this happenstance means a challenge for Abt Sportsline - a challenge the team from Kempten meets by enhancing this exceptional sports car.

The new Audi TT is a model which already combines clarity and form with modern technology in the serial car and therefore offers maximum driving pleasure. "This is the best precondition we can imagine to perfect a car," explains Hans-J rgen Abt, managing director of Abt Sportsline - and presents convincing data:

The masterpiece in the new Abt TT model range is the Abt TT-R equipped with a VR6 3.2 ltr. engine and a performance of 355 HP (262 kW). This outstanding sports car offers real racing adventure for the roads. The Abt TT-R accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds compared to the serial model that takes 5.9 seconds.

In connection with the Abt TT-Sport models, the Bavarian team has also noticeably boosted the power of the VR6 3.2 ltr. and 2.0 T-FSI engines . The Abt supercharger kit and modifications of the motor management ensure that the 3.2 ltr. 6-cylinder engine now performs 310 HP (228 kW) instead of the serial 250 HP (184 kW). The Abt engineers also did a good job with the 2.0 TFSI engine. They upgraded the serial power of 200 HP (147 kW) to 270 HP (199 kW) with a maximum torque of 350 Nm (serial 280 Nm).

For the new 2-litre TT Abt also offers its innovative intelligentSport-technology. Specific modifications of the motor management allow the Abt TT-iS to be fuelled with standard, super or superplus gasoline. The performance increases to as much as 240 HP (177 kW) depending on the fuel quality. More power - less thirst. With an additional Abt gearbox modification the fuel consumption of the Abt TT-iS can be reduced by up to four litres.

Besides the power boost, the modified design of the Abt TT models was one of the most important factors. In this connection Abt Sportsline has developed special body styling parts that make the TT a real eye-catcher communicating power and dynamics. With an integrated grille element, the front skirt emphasizes the area around the fog lights and single-frame grille so that the face of the Abt TT becomes even more aggressive and marked. The lateral body styling parts continue the dynamical body language and lead directly to the extravagant rear with rear skirt inset and rear wing. In contrast to the filigree serial part the Abt rear wing cannot be folded but is a part that is firmly integrated into hatchback. The result is not only a racier design; it also brings about more downforce. The 4-pipe rear muffler is the finishing touch that perfectly harmonizes with the black rear skirt inset and rear diffuser. To round off the striking overall optical design, Abt Sportsline recommends the 19-inch wheels AR19 and SP1 with tyres sized 255/35 ZR 19.

What is more, Abt has also included a special suspension kit and suspension springs in its product range so as to meet the demands of the power upgrade and modified design.

The new Abt TT with its extraordinary driving performance and body styling has everything a winner needs.

Abt TT engine models:
VR6 3.2 K 355 HP (262 kW) Abt TT-R
VR6 3.2 K 310 HP (228 kW) Abt TT-Sport
2.0 T-FSI 270 HP (199 kW) Abt TT-Sport
2.0 T-FSI 240 HP (177 kW) Abt TT-iS

Bugatti Veyron, you're dead to me; 1001 supposed horsepower? 923 lb-ft of torque? Hobo numbers. Witness the SSC Ultimate Aero TT. Know it, love it, laugh at its Focus SVT headlights, but quiver in fear of its 387 cubic inch, twin-turbocharged joy-production unit. Why? How about 1,081 hp, 961 lb-ft of torque, and a ludicrous theoretical top speed of 273.75 mph. Forbes thought well enough to put it at the top of the 10 fastest American cars list because, um, it's wicked fast. Recently, SSC dropped a whole slew of new multimedia on its website, and it's giving me a warm, fuzzy feeling, like a puppy and a kitten napping in a Santa hat next to a koala cub. <![CDATA[ Car Hack's Notebook: Covering the Essen Show, Day Two ]]>

Volkswagen Audi Group can feel a bit slighted not to be the first port of call on the Essen show, but even a four-wheel drive, 300 hp battle wagon can't make a huge impression in this company. Still, the Passat R36 is a serious piece of kit in its own right, and should be an enticing alternative for those who want the performance but not the price premium that goes with Audi S4 ownership. It's a near-perfect Q car, especially in Touring form. Only the deep airdams, dinner-plate brake discs and mildly revised aero kit give away the violence held within. There are faster cars in the world, but no faster VW, this one will hit 60mph in 5.6s and go on to the standard 155mph top end.

r36_gallery.jpg

Audi bought the 3.2-litre TT Roadster, as well as taking the R8 on its world tour, and a second look at the most eagerly anticipated supercar for many a year reveals an "unresolved" front end, as the clever mags like to call it.

It would have only taken carbon-fiber swords, optional extras on the rest of the lineup, to turn the R8 into a butch monster. The cheap matte-black numbers under those evil daytime running lights ruin the entire face of the car, though. It's like a beautiful girl with a thick mustache — you can't help staring at this massive flaw. If you've ordered one, please take note.

Annoyingly for Audi, the Abt TT-R next door looked an even more radical achievement, with duel-fuel and 355bhp — and that's not bad. There are no electric motors here, it's a combined petrol and LP-gas unit that falls under Abt's rather glamorous sounding iF-technology. This increases its range by up to 250 miles, apparently, and Abt claims no discernible difference in performance between the modes.

As well as the carbon-fiber bonnet, bodykit and interior trim that tip the relatively androgynous new TT shape into pure masculinity. No longer is the TT a "girl's car," especially with the vicious supercharger kit installed that should push the chassis to the limits of its almighty potential. The new 0-60mph time of 5.1s is far from shabby, too.

Back in the tuned throng, Mansory's on a mission to offend with a Continental GT Widebody so garish in full black-and-orange people actually plucked out their eyes to avoid staring in the face of pure evil. Actually they didn't, they just left in a bewildered, confused state.

But before dismissing it as dog vomit on wheels, check out the lines. If the car was all black, it would look pretty damned fine. The deep front spoiler, wild extended flanks and that rear wing provide a level of muscularity that would make the folks at Crewe a little hot under the collar. And the power hike will do the same to the driver, as Mansory's tinkering under the bonnet produces more than 630bhp of projectile force that helps the GT storm to 60mph in 4.5s and all the way up to 203mph.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: Audi TT RS ]]> audi__tt_rs_spy.jpg

Word came down earlier this year that Audi was indeed working on an RS version of its new TT coupe, following reports to the contrary. Audi kind of had to do it, considering the existence of BMW's M Coupe, Porsche Cayman S and Mercedes' SLK 55 AMG in the hot little market. According to spies, a reported 350 hp on tap and other tweakage will make such a flagship TT worthy of Audi's highest-performance designation. The latest reports indicate Audi will opt for a tweaked-out version of the 3.6 liter FSI V6, not a worked over, twin-turbo 2.5 liter in-line five, as had been reported. No word on earlier rumors that a transverse-mounted V8 is in the works.

<![CDATA[ Off With Your Top: Audi Reveals the new TT Roadster ]]>

The redesiged Audi TT got a new baby sister yesterday, as Audi revealed the new TT Roadster right on schedule. The two-seater is getting a cloth top, not a retractable gizmo (but you knew that) and powertrain choices mirror those of the 2007 coupe — 2.0 TFSI (200 hp) and 3.2 V6 FSI (250 hp). They're also taken to calling the optional dual-clutch gearbox S-tronic, not DSG, which is a slight bit of geekery for those who put a fine point on things. Expect to see it in person at the Detroit show in January. Press release after the jump. [Gallery]

Press Release:

Sporty Passion
The new Audi TT Roadster

Sheer sportiness, a genuine driving experience plus high power reserves - cue the new TT Roadster from Audi. The open-top sports car retains the distinctive lines of its tremendously successful predecessor, but instils them with even greater emotion, performance and dynamism.

Audi offers a choice of two engines for its new TT Roadster. The 3.2-litre V6 power unit generates 184 kW (250 bhp) and is coupled to the quattro drive system as standard. The 2.0 TFSI engine, which blends turbocharging with petrol direct injection technology, delivers 147 kW (200 bhp) to the front wheels. Both model variants can be ordered with the innovative S tronic dual-clutch gearbox as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual shift.

The chassis of the new Roadster is also built for impressive sporty performance. Its highlight is Audi magnetic ride, the optional suspension damping technology that allows drivers to choose between an uncompromisingly dynamic ride or more comfort-orientated characteristics.

To mirror the puristic character of open-top motoring, the boldly styled body is crowned by a lightweight cloth hood. The TT Roadster 3.2 quattro comes as standard with a quick-action, fully automatic softtop which is available as an option for the 2.0 TFSI at a price of €1,015.

Despite its lavish specification, the new Audi TT Roadster will be priced similarly to the outgoing model. It will be launched in Germany in spring 2007 with prices starting from €33,800 (incl. 19 % VAT).

The exterior design

With its rigorous geometry and clarity, the design of the first TT Roadster elevated it to the status of a cult classic. Audi has preserved the charismatic design idiom and carefully honed it for the new model.

Whereas the tail end and the roof section seem to flow into one another at the rear of the TT Coupé, the soft top of the TT Roadster forms a clear contrast that gives the overall design a more geometric look. The body's lines brim with power and forward thrust. This impression is underscored by the athletic curves of the vehicle's flanks just as much as by the rising dynamic line above the sill area and the taut, muscular shoulder line. The eye-catching fuel filler cap positioned above the rear right wheel sports a classic aluminium design.

The face of the new Audi TT Roadster has an expressive feel. Wing-shaped plastic elements are embedded into the slanted, sharply tapered headlights to emphasise the three-dimensional depth of the lamp units. At the rear of the car, it is the large tailpipes and the wide diffuser which stand out. The tube-shaped reflectors seem to hover inside the tail light units. As on the Coupé, an electrically powered spoiler rises up out of the boot lid when the speed reaches 120 km/h.

Compared to the model it replaces the new TT Roadster has undergone a growth spurt, with the new proportions accentuating its sporty nature. Length is now 4,178 millimetres (+ 137 mm), width 1,842 mm (+ 78 mm) and height 1,358 mm (+ 8 mm), while the wheelbase has been extended by 46 to 2468 mm. Despite the extra size, however, the drag coefficient of the 2.0 TFSI is just 0.32 with the soft top up.

The soft top

Audi made a conscious decision to keep the cloth hood for the new TT Roadster. The soft top concept fits in perfectly with the philosophy of puristic open-top motoring and also offers a number of benefits over a folding steel hard top.

The cloth hood, incorporating reinforcements made from steel and aluminium as well as a large glass rear window, has a very lightweight construction - not only does this reduce the overall weight of the TT Roadster, it lowers its centre of gravity too. It sleekly blends in with the car's lines and takes up only a small amount of space when folded down. Thanks to the new Z-fold, the front section of the roof lies on top of the cloth like a cover. It locks into place to lie flush with the body, dispensing with the need for a tonneau cover. The soft top is available in the colours black and dark grey.

The TT Roadster 3.2 quattro comes as standard with an electrohydraulically powered soft top, which is available for the 2.0 TFSI as an option. This version of the soft top opens in just 12 seconds at the push of a button, and can even be operated on the move at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The fully automatic hood incorporates an additional layer of soundproofing beneath the black headliner for even better acoustic and thermal insulation.

The manually operated roof is operated by means of a central catch. A mesh wind deflector that extends and retracts electrically can be ordered as an option to smooth the airstream in the interior - none of the competitor models are able to offer such a convenient solution.

The body and safety

Like the TT Coupé, the body of the TT Roadster is also built on the principles of Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, featuring a pioneering hybrid construction that showcases the brand's tremendous expertise in lightweight design. The body is made from 58 percent aluminium and 42 percent steel. This material mix makes the Roadster extremely light, with the 2.0 TFSI tipping the scales at just 1,295 kilograms when unladen.

To ensure that the load is distributed evenly between the axles, the steel components are located principally at the rear of the body - the bulkhead behind the passenger compartment, for example, is made from steel. This particular component, which anchors the high-strength roll-over bars with their elegant plastic covering, has a fundamental role to play in the body's overall rigidity.

The side sills are also specific to the Roadster: they consist of extruded aluminium sections containing numerous reinforcing ribs. The A-pillars have been strengthened too and a high-strength steel tube integrated into the frame of the windscreen. Already impressive in the outgoing TT Roadster, static torsional strength has been more than doubled in the new model - this translates into outstanding vibrational comfort and precision handling.

A full ensemble of restraint systems promise the greatest possible passive safety. In the event of an impact from the side, aluminium beams and padding in the doors are called into action along with the head and thorax side airbags. Two-stage full-size airbags and the Audi backguard system are on hand to limit the consequences of a collision from the front and rear respectively.

The interior

The interior of the TT Roadster is noticeably larger too, offering extra headroom and elbow room. The width at shoulder height is now 1362 mm, an increase of 29 mm.

Deep-set sports seats provide firm lateral support for both the driver and passenger. The standard-specification leather sports steering wheel features a flat-bottomed rim. The optional Impulse leather trim with its distinctive topstitching already attained cult status when it was offered for the outgoing model; it is one of four different leather trim packages. The 3.2 quattro is upholstered in a combined Alcantara/Leather trim as standard.

The three circular air outlets and the dome shrouding the instrument cluster dials inject the cockpit with characteristic TT flair. As is to be expected of an Audi, the ergonomic concept is perfect and the workmanship of the very finest standard. The increase in the body's dimensions has also benefited luggage space, which has expanded from 210 to 250 litres in both the front-wheel-drive and the quattro variant.

The drive train

Like the TT Coupé, the new Roadster is available with a choice of two transverse-mounted petrol engines. Both generate high pulling power and impressive peak output, resulting in out-and-out sporty performance. The four-cylinder engine directs its power to the front wheels, while the V6 powers all four wheels based on the quattro principle offering dynamism and sure roadholding in equal measure. Apart from a sporty six-speed manual shift, both engines are also available in conjunction with the innovative S tronic dual-clutch gearbox for lightning-fast gear changes without any interruption in the power flow.

The four-cylinder unit bearing the initials TFSI musters up 147 kW (200 bhp) and a constant 280 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm from its capacity of 1,984 cc. The TFSI technology combines a turbocharger to optimum effect with Audi's own petrol direct injection, which produces a distinct improvement in combustion efficiency.

In both 2005 and 2006, the responsive and extremely refined two-litre turbocharged FSI unit was voted "Engine of the Year" by an international jury of experts.

When fitted with the S tronic shift, the Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TFSI accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 237 km/h. It burns an average of just 7.8 litres of fuel for every 100 km.

The V6 unit with its capacity of 3,189 cc delivers 184 kW (250 bhp) and a peak torque of 320 Nm which is on tap between 2,500 and 3,000 rpm. The sonorous, ultra-compact long-stroke engine features two continuously adjustable camshafts. The TT Roadster 3.2 quattro sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds with the S tronic gearbox and can, if necessary, go on to reach a governed top speed of 250 km/h. It returns average fuel consumption figures of 9.5 l/100 km.

The chassis

The sporty chassis has undergone complete redevelopment for the new TT Roadster. Its chief features are the complex four-link rear suspension, wide track widths, elastokinematics that have been heavily reworked, plus large wheels. The 2.0 TFSI rides on 16-inch and the 3.2 quattro on 17-inch alloy wheels. The wheels may be specified with run-flat capabilities as an option.

The front wheel suspension, which is linked to a separate subframe, has a McPherson construction that has been refined by the use of lightweight aluminium components. The electromechanical power-assisted steering combines a direct ratio with sensitive precision.

The construction of the four-link rear suspension, which also operates using a subframe, separates the coil springs and the shock absorbers from one another. The longitudinal links - which have a relatively soft set-up for enhanced ride comfort - absorb the propulsive and braking forces, while the rigid connection of the three transverse links for each wheel allows them to direct the lateral forces into the bodyshell with great precision.

The redeveloped electronic stabilisation program (ESP) has been optimised for a sporty driving style and to help produce the steering balance of the TT Roadster, which varies between neutral and slight understeer. If necessary, the brake assist system takes action to ensure that the four large disc brakes build up maximum braking power as fast as possible.

The optional Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system is a high-tech feature that is unique in the roadster segment. At the push of a button, drivers can choose between either an extra-comfortable or a decidedly dynamic suspension set-up. Circulating inside the shock absorber struts is a special fluid containing minute magnetic particles. Applying a voltage to this fluid alters its viscosity - and therefore the damping characteristics - within milliseconds.

The equipment

All variants of the new Audi TT Roadster come generously equipped as standard, with the specification including the new "chorus" audio system and a driver information system, and in the 3.2 quattro, automatic air conditioning. There is a choice of two optional navigation systems, both DVD-based and featuring the exemplary MMI operating logic. Universal mobile phone preparation and the resonant Bose surround-sound system are also available.

An extra touch of class can be added to the interior's sophisticated and sporty ambience by opting for either of the two aluminium styling packages. The standard storage facilities, featuring deep compartments in the doors and two cup holders, can be supplemented with the storage package, comprising three storage nets and four extra, practical compartments. Customers who lead a sporty, active lifestyle are also able to opt for a load-through facility in the rear panel, including a ski bag which is large enough to accommodate two pairs of skis up to 1.90 m in length - something which no other model in the roadster segment is able to offer.

Xenon plus headlights with the adaptive light cornering function can also be found on the extensive list of equipment options. They are fitted in conjunction with a headlight styling package that Audi includes as standard on the 3.2 quattro.

The new Audi TT Roadster will be launched on the German market in spring 2007, with order books opening before the end of this year. Prices will be similar to those for the outgoing model: the 2.0 TFSI version will cost €33,800 (incl. 19 % VAT) and the 3.2 quattro will come with a price tag of €43,800.

Unsatisfied with the mechanical hotness of Audi's new TT? Edmunds Inside Line is reporting two up-spec'd TT models are on the way, following a similar performance-badging continuum as Audi's more conventional lines. Adding to a recent missive in Motor Trend, Edmunds says at hand are the TT-S for 2007 and TT-RS for 2008. The TT-S will have similiar hardware as the company's new S3 hatch — that is, 265 hp from its turbocharged 2.0-liter four — though the TT could get additional horsepower by way of engine tweaks. The TT-RS won't get the 3.6-liter V6, as many had speculated. Instead, it'll reportedly get a turbo'd version of the North American Jetta's 2.5-liter five-cylinder, fitted with an identical cylinder head configuration as the company's 5.2-liter V10, and producing in the neighborhood of 365 hp. Transmission choices will allegedly include six-speed manual and a 7-speed version of the Tiptronic autobox. We're still waiting for the transverse-mounted V8.

Worldly auto spy Hans G. Lehmann caught the new Audi TT roadster, top up and sans disguise, in an undisclosed location. It's the first variant of the new generation coupe to break cover, and it'll likely show up ahead of the long-speculated S version. The shots confirm the company indeed decided to save weight by putting the kabosh on a rumored Karmann-built retractable hardtop, though we're still not ruling out a bra made from two coconut halves.

Bad news for Audi TT fans hoping for a superfreaky version of the coupe: It's not happening, says AutoExpress. Apparently the high-powered TT rumored to have been in the works is a big nein. The company doesn't want to create any manner of hotness that would horn in on the new R8's spotlight. TT-loving sportos will just have to be satisfied with S-Line cosmetics upgrades and maybe an aftermarket chip or two. That and a nice Riesling. [Photo courtesy of Fourtitude]

<![CDATA[ It's No 1977 Trans Am: Audi's TT S-Line ]]>

We've always thought Audi should guard the S designation jealously, not conflate its S-Line appearance packages with its S-level performance cars. But we're not running Audi (note, as evidence, the company's glaring lack of a 1977 Trans Am offering). Fourtitude relates some official shots of the 2007 TT dolled up in its S-line finery. Sure, it's quite fetching, but it would look way better in T-tops and screaming chicken decal.

What happens when you slice the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10 in half? (Don't try it at home, kids.) Actually, you get junk, unless you're an Audi engineer. Then — as MotorTrend reports — you get a 350-hp inline five for a version of the new Audi TT, being developed under the working name, TT-Lambo. In theory, the powerplant would be similar to the 2.5-liter inline five from the VW Golf and Jetta, but a new cylinder head and turbocharger would result in a car, reportedly due in 2009, that's a new incarnation of the TT Quattrosport, albiet one for US buyers as well. Additions will include an aero kit and brake upgrade, with optional ceramics potentially, and 19- or 20-inch alloys. Back to the old turbo five? That just had to be the Italians' idea. <![CDATA[ Fresh Wind From Germany: The Next Audi Convertibles ]]>

Germany's AutoBild reports on Audi's new crop of cabrios on its way from Ingolstadt. Talk has been circulating about the company's R8 supercar being offered in a Gallardo-like spider version, and the Bild talks about that car as if it's a done deal, though they've yet to put imagery-meister Huckfeld on the case. They're also schreiben about the Audi A3 cabrio, which is expected to hit in 2007, possibly at the same time as the TT roadster. It's all a matter of "fresh wind" breaking from the Audi drawing boards, Bild says — though it's possible Google Translate may be overstating the case.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: 2007 Audi TT in the Wilds of Los Angeles ]]> audi_tt_la.jpg

Our main main in Hollywood, Hue Hughes, spotted a new 2007 Audi TT on the 405 yesterday. He whipped out his cameraphone, but alas, could only catch the thumbnail-sized pics above. Check it:

... the popup spoiler was a dead giveaway. it looks a lot better in person, the press photos don't do it justice. it had dealer tags on the back and the dealer's girlfriend in the front seat. it wasn't drawing much attention, prob cause it looks almost like the original.

i dont think these photos could be any smaller. camera phone + driving = shitty pictures.

That's fine, Hue. if nothing else, they'll make excellent first-class stamps.

<![CDATA[ Defying the World Cup: Fifth Gear Drives the 2007 Audi TT ]]>

The UK's "Fifth Gear" defies the juggernaut known as the World Cup (a capital offense in many localities) to test drive Audi's new TT in Germany Austria. They found the TT's met a few of Audi's stated, er, goals, such as to make the new model more of a driver's car than the rather aenemic previous version had been, despite its radical design. The new TT also sounds pretty damn good for a four banger. In a couple of words, they deem it, "genuinely entertaining," unlike most of the Cup games, we're afraid.

<![CDATA[ Audi to Put Diesel in TT, Scirocco? ]]>

One of the first beneficiaries of Audi's new, diesels-are-cool brand message — led by its R10 LeMans racer — will be the TT, says AutoWeek. The powerplant in question won't be one of the company's larger furnaces, like its 2.7- or 3.0-liter, which can't be shoehorned into the TT's engine bay. Instead, it'll be a 2.0-liter, common-rail four from Volkswagen. That motor will have to get a serious turbocharging, considering it currently tops out at 140 hp, and will likely be shared with the Scirocco, which, word is, will get a tuned diesel as well, when it debuts for the 2008 model year.

<![CDATA[ Audi Update: TT Coming to US in '08, A3 S-Line in '07 ]]>

In between the 2006 model year, when the current-generation Audi TT was pulled from states where it didn't meet new emissions requirements (e.g., New York, California, Massachusetts) and the 2008 model year, when Audi will introduce the new TT, will be the year without TTs. Audi officials say there won't be a 2007-model TT, but the company will debut an A3 S-line (not an S3, mind you; just an A3 with S design elements and badging) and the new V10-powered S8. Nonetheless, like the Ferrari 599 GTB, the TT will ride on a bed of electrons, with Delphi's automatically adjustable "magnetorheological" suspension to handle road-smoothing duties.

In a new European TV spot for Audi's next-generation TT coupe, the car's got its own energy field that provides temporary energy to the city it passes through. It's done in typical Audi-commercial style. That is, clever and technically awesome, but lacking in emotional bridgebuilding. Then again, the tagline is "Pure Energy," so we weren't expecting a box of chocolates. [Thanks to Dave for the tip.]
