Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. I know what many of you DOTS aficionados are saying now. You're saying "Hey, didn't we just have an old VW bus a mere two Truck Mondays ago? What about that '78 Power Wagon we still haven't seen?" However, the VW geeks out there are saying "Oooooh! The doors!" Yes, this here Alameda Transporter has the rare and sought-after"walk-through"double door setup, which means we're doing VWs for two of the last three Truck Mondays.

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Since it's DOTS Truck Monday, let's have an old Ford! I found this '60 parked just across the street from the '70 Dodge Challenger and the '57 Cadillac, and it's one sharp-looking work truck.

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Alameda is definitely a VW Transporter sort of town; you can find all the major Transporter-loving groups here, from original-owner curmudgeons to Spicoli-grade surfers. Yes, even though Alameda is inside San Francisco Bay and thus gets waves better measured in inches than in feet on its beaches, we still have plenty of surfers here. Windsurfers and kite surfers, that is, crazies who think nothing of braving the 50° water, howling winds, and vicious currents on their boards. And when they're done flirting with death for the day, they need a proper vehicle to store their bongshaul their gear back home.

1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. You know, after 379 vehicles in this series, we've had just one Jeep, and that was a 2-wheel-drive mail-carrier's DJ5? Oh, sure, we saw this 1945 GPW 'Jeep', but that was built by Ford! Meanwhile, we've had five IHC Scouts. What's the deal here- is Alameda's Navy-town heritage enforcing some unspoken anti-Army bias that results in old Jeeps getting vandalized? I got no idea, folks, but I knew I had to go out and find the oldest street-parked Jeep within easy walking distance of my housein town!

I found this work truck parked on a busy East End street, quite close to the '65 Thunderbird, and it's still earning its keep well into its fifth decade on the planet.

When we saw the Mitsubishi L300- which is a seriously rare machine in the United States, though I've just found another one in Alameda- some readers felt that the Toyota Van deserved a place in this series as well. You can find those things all over the place, so I decided I'd wait until I found an interesting one… and now I've found two!

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. DOTS Truck Monday is with us once again, and today we're going to check out a vehicle that qualifies as both truck and car: a '64 Ford Falcon with truck bed, aka Ranchero! Then, because polls lessen the sting of Simon Legree's workplace lash- which always seems to fall on one's back with particular malice on a Monday- we'll all vote on our favorite street-parked Alameda Ranchero.

1965 Chevrolet Suburban
Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The island has several old Suburbans still racking up the miles; we've seen this '63 GMC Carryall and today we'll be looking at an equally weathered '65 Chevy. This truck parks about a half-block from the '65 Thunderbird and just around the corner from the '87 Mercedes-Benz 560SL, with at least a dozen Alameda DOTS cars living within a couple blocks.
