I've driven 125 miles in a day just running errands.

Yup. I've got a client who needs to replace a copper roof. It's a high quality, 100 year roof. But it's been about 135 years now... The numbers are better than they used to be, but it's still not pretty.

I think this is a great idea. First, it allows Ford to say they have an electric vehicle. A real one. Second, it will allow Ford to really test the market for electric vehicles on a platform that is capable of both IC and BEV powertrains. Should the BEV version not really do well they have not wasted a lot of time, effort and dollars developing a vehicle without an engine.
GM, on the other had, has a dedicated BEV coming. What if it doesn't sell? They're screwed.

The principle probably makes more sense in Europe, given the smaller distances between distribution points and population centres.
Yet I can't see any hint of a formal UK/EU release date.
Pourquoi?

Since petrol and diesel are about US$8 over in Blighty, one is obviously a tad curious.
Also, the tax breaks for a zero CO2 emitting vehicle across a fleet should save operators a shed load.
Of course, firms that keep their own fitters/mechanics will have some serious retraining to do, which will cost, but I guess the cost of that can be defrayed against tax.
Also also, when these batteries do eventually die, then someone will have to pay for their safe disposal, and I have no idea if that would be the company, local authority, or governmentt via the exchequer(treasury).
I haven't been directly involved with commercial vehicles for a very long time, so any thoughts would be interesting to hear.

Look's like we'll be seeing a lot more call for folks who understand auto electrical systems. Not so much call for valve jobs or exhaust systems.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Between this and the gas version, Ford might have trouble keeping up with demand.

Now what is GM doing? Oh yeah, tarting up some heavily modified Holden so it can take part in some left turn festival in Florida. Way to go GM.

But hell, it'll probably still beat the Camaro to market.

@Triborough: keep in mind the Volt is sort of the face of the Voltec program (formerly E-Flex). The plan is to drop that modular system into all kinds of products when design verification and production release is complete.

On the other hand, that's one thing they should take their sweet time on. I don't want them going all X-car on me.

I have to give the point for this round to Ford.
