I swear to god, you guys would cream at all the cool stuff I see in Long Island City / Astoria /Greenpoint. Lots of Europeans, lots of cash, and cool ass cars. Anything from og minis, to brand new Maserati, to bentleys and rollers, and a few 2CV, and other incredibly tiny euro cars that i have no idea. Also Astoria is the home of gullwing motors, packed with some of the juciest cars evah!

I am around there quite frequently and have never seen the Trabant. There is a Citroën 2CV that parks in that neck of the woods, though.

    Citroën 2CV

However, the only interesting car I saw around there today was a malaise green 1973 Mercury Montego which I have seen in about half a dozen other places in the city.

@Triborough: You wouldn't happen to mean this 2CV, would you? Man is it weird that I took photos of the same car that Triborough did. When I took the pictures of the Trabi, the 2CV was just across the street. It was odd.

I never thought the day would come, but it finally has! And though it feels great to see my pictures up on this, the little corner of the internet which helped to get me so hooked on cars, I think that the whole process of taking pictures of cars has had a far deeper effect on me. What started out as a geeky dream of showing up on Down on the Street turned quickly into a means of grounding myself. When I came back from school in New York City to my Central California home, going through every piece of my town street by street finally gave me a feeling of a hometown, of some kind of attachment to the very streets that I grew up on. The picture albums I have tell the story of that sweet, hot, hazy summer of 2008 and now that I'm back in New York, I've continued the process here, growing more settled into the neighborhoods and streets I've come to live in. I've gone over my past block by block and now I'm fixing myself to the present, all by going out day after day with an obsolete digital camera sticking out of my pocket, ready to weather the strange looks and puzzled complexions of the New Yorkers walking by watching some college student lying stomach down on the street to try to get a low angle shot. Great as the cars are, it's the background that makes them so great for me, and in framing the cars with their surroundings, I end up framing myself in as well.

That thing is pretty cool. I would probably add a hot rodded snowmobile engine for the ultimate in two stroke motoring.

I also learned something on Wikipedia today. Apparently, the DDR was going to have the internet suffix ".dd" but they never used it.

    From Wikipedia

"Duroplast is a composite thermosetting plastic, a close relative of formica and bakelite. It is a resin plastic reinforced with fibers (either cotton or wool) making it a fiber-reinforced plastic similar to glass-reinforced plastic.

Duroplast cannot be further recycled, and burning it produces toxic fumes, so disposing of the bodies of old Trabants is a problem. However, Duroplast's components are edible, and there are stories of pigs, sheep or other domestic farm animals consuming duroplast."

34 MPG and it's made out of Wool and Cotton. And Prius owners think they are green. This thing has been green since 1960!

No doubt it also used to drive to and from school in the blinding heat and snow up hill both ways. At least it felt like that.

@TurboWeasel: Green? Try blue, as in the smoke. Plus, the body won't biodegrade, and if you try to incinerate it, it gives off some horrible cocktail of noxious vaporous pollutants. I can't provide a solid reference, but they supposedly had to pass a law in Germany after reunification that made it a crime to abandon a Trabbie.

@smalleyxb122: I think the Trabants were more some odd combination of paper maeche, wood chips, and bondo from the factory, not even plastic/fiberglass. Hemmings Sports and Exotic had an article a while back on a guy that actually restored one in the US.
