1988 MR2.
1998 Corolla.
2005 Matrix.
Some of the best cars I have ever owned! Perhaps if they didn't build them to last so damn long they'd sell more and make more money.
Then again, if they did that, they might have been looking
for my Canadian and Ontario tax dollars to bail them out too!
Go ahead and call my car an appliance, I make it fun to drive!

I presume all of them have been equipped with manual transmissions, as well? And is that Matrix the XRS? Those're little monsters.

The critical difference is that NONE of them were automatic or Camrys.
By the way, I wish I could take my mother's new car privileges away for being a disgusting slob. When we got our 1995 Thunderbird in PERFECT condition with 35000 miles two years ago, the interior was SPOTLESS, like it'd just come out of the dealership, and still had a hint of new car smell.
Now the carpet's got stains and it smells bad in that car.
Anyways, Polar, the key difference is that you owned 5-speeds.
Try driving an automatic Camry and see what I mean.
Have you ever even seen a stickshift Camry? I've seen like, two. Ever.

Why can't they build a good diesel truck like the americans.. why can't they build good sports cars like the germans..
pfft.. toyota.. please.. they deserve to go under!! crazy japanese pretending they're all reserved building bland appliances.. have you looked at appliances lately.. brushed stainless.. in your kitchen.. and in your garage.. miles of monochromatic beige.. oh what a feeling!

Or as I found myself humming the other day while working on a Corolla.
"Oh what a feeling, broken coil!"

Not that its particularly exciting or anything, but I see far fewer new Malibus in "sandstone beige" or plain white than Camrys.
Whatever, its just the inevitable counter-culture to the status-quo.

The whole compact to midsize car segments feel this way to me.
The only mainstream midsizers that really get my blood pumping are the LS4 V8 W-bodies. What a hoot, I dare you to hoon one.

I'd compare the Camry more to the Impala, honestly - miserable to drive, proven drivetrain, bland yet offensive.

But it does seem strange that they actually made money, Eiji Toyoda makes it seem that Toyota lost a lot of money until the introduction of the Toyopet Crown. Maybe profits from the weaving part of the business are also included?

Also, that car on the cover looks oddly familiar. Like an artist's rendering of a first-gen J-body.

Oh what a kick in the crotch.
Having worked for Toyota, I'm not that saddened really.
