BIG difference on the one the US Special Forces are using. That's a US-Spec Tacoma that was shipped over there for usage. Yes, it was to blend in, but that has the weak Dana sourced frame that rusts out, the IFS with rack and pinion steering (weaker), and is altogether a much lesser truck than the Hilux. Some cosmetic similarities, but that's about it. They share no body panels nor frame. I'm a Toyota guy, and even I admit the Tacoma is a horrendous joke compared to the Hilux. #pickuptrucks
Without a doubt the insurgent choice of make is Toyota. A majority of the suicide bomber vehicles are Toyotas (be it Corollas, Hilux's or Surf's (the latter two being alien to us Yanks)). And all of the Afghan National Police/Army (ANP and ANA) ride around in Ford Rangers.
That's right. Our (American's) classic battle Toyota and Ford, foreign and domestic, persists in Afghanistan. And unsurprisingly even in Afghanistan, Toyotas are associated with evil, and Fords are good (enough).
Fun fact: I once saw a red Nissan 300ZX in Kabul, Afghanistan. It the NA version, but still really sweet. I got all girly, cause I used to have a 91' black 300ZX, but the manlier version with Twin Turbos and T-Tops (T-Ts!). #pickuptrucks
Look at that, Fiat takes over and starts producing results immediately! Just wait, when the Ducato van comes over to the states they'll forge a contract to be the single source supplier for NAMBLA. #pickuptrucks
@theeastbaykid: Damn hamsters. That was supposed to be under the NAMBLA reference. But to chime in on this one, that US Specical Forces pic looks like a US-market 2001-2004 Tacoma, while the other guys are using the good old Hilux. #pickuptrucks
I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a rusty old Toyota pickup back home that said 'Buy Toyota! Countless African and Middle-Eastern militas can't be wrong!' #pickuptrucks
Seriously? You're basing the idea that the Taliban is using Dodge trucks on a drawing that accompanies a story? The same drawing features a missile that looks like a camouflage-print pencil?
As good as the New Yorker's fact-checking department may be, I find it unlikely that they fact-checked that minor a detail of an illustration. Never mind that all the illustration needs to go from Toyota Tacoma to Dodge truck is to add the vertical bar to the grille.
Oh, and Toyota trucks did at one time have crosshair grilles.
Man, if you're gonna speculate that the Taliban is using a truck that was likely never shipped to the area to begin with (read: conspicuous), you gotta start with some evidence less flimsy than "Somebody drew a truck in the New Yorker that looks like it might be a Dodge!"
Interesting take on extraordinary rendition. Instead of sending the terrorist to get tortured, we just said the torture to the terrorist, and boost the economy at the same time. I see nothing wrong with the switch to Dodge.
Although I think the real reason they switched was the name change from Dodge, cowardly, to Ram. See Fiat is making a difference already. #pickuptrucks
@Maxichamp: To back up my point that these journalist types know nothing about cars, did anyone read the NYT Sunday Magazine language piece about how Cadillac has not built a decent car since the 60s? Clueless morons! #pickuptrucks
I can't help but think that when an AGM-86 missile hits this bunch it's going to look like Gallagher hitting a watermelon with the Sledge-O-Matic. #pickuptrucks
