Ahem.... I noticed you left the Honda Coupe Z 600 off your "desirable older Japanese cars" list. Do you claim to know something I should have? And why didn't you tell me? ;) #1985toyotacorolla
$20 says the engine was replaced because numbnut somehow managed to kill a Toyota mill with a paltry 90k miles on it.
90k is basically break in on those 4AGs if you take care of them. They won't take nearly as much deliberate neglect / abuse as the 22rs but they're not exactly fragile. #1985toyotacorolla
See, I was looking it over and thinking "well, it's no Nice Price, but it's not total pipe territory if you put the real body kit back on". Like my beloved Volvos, these cars usually aren't worth more than a couple grand, but in nice shape with desirable options, that can go up a bit... but then I saw the MySpack URL on the windshield.
Oh man, I wanted to like this car. It has most/all of the things I look for in a desirable Nice Price car:
1) Attainable price
2) Rare
3) Able to drive without MASSIVE depreciation
And yet, this has Crack Pipe written all over it. Riced-out, poorly fitting body panels. A *very* hard life of drifting. Low hp/dollar. And if you put some money into restoring it, at the end of the day you're stuck with a really, really nice... Corolla.
This beercan's been beat to hell, and the guy's proud of it. Look at the stickers, read the ad, the guy's a drifter. This ricer's probably spent more time going sideways than being driven like what it is, a cheap economy car. It's been thrashed, hard. By a kid. A semi literate one, at that.
Whoever did all the cheesedick modifications, it looks like they did them with their feet. Hack job. Crack Pipe.
But overall, not crack pipe, if not really nice price, either. I suppose it's a good deal if you really want to do the Inital D impression. #1985toyotacorolla
Abused by its former owner, carrying dubious custom touches, dangerous RHD headlights, ugly color, shabby interior, and it's not even over 120hp? How is anyone even thinking nice price?
Faster alternatives at similar price and condition:
1988 Mustang GT
1989 Camaro IROC-Z
1987 Dodge Conquest
1987 Merkur XR4Ti #1985toyotacorolla
@SagarikaLumos: It won't let me edit it, but let's go ahead and add the RWD 1987 Isuzu Impulse, and at this price I bet you could even get an early Infiniti M30 in nicer condition to boot. #1985toyotacorolla
@SagarikaLumos: Lexus SC300. Nissan Z31; hell, for the cash, a Z32. 200SX S12. Volvo 242 Turbo and a pile of go-fast bits. Honda Prelude, if you want to autocross but not drift. #1985toyotacorolla
If it passes muster with a competent mechanic's inspection, Nice Price. However, that is not terribly likely, given the presentation. So, this gets the pipe. #1985toyotacorolla
"the number of desirable older Japanese cars sold in the U.S. can pretty much be counted on one's fingers- S2000, NSX, Fairlady, Miata, RX-7, WRX, Evo. . . and from Toyota, the 2000GT, Supra and Corolla. 2000GT, Supra and. . . Corolla?"
What!? Even if you only consider Toyota, there's the first-gen MR2 (and the second-gen, if you count it as"older").
Then there's the CRX, the Sentra SE-R, early Miatae, and the old Jalopnik fave the Mitsubishi Starion.
Such complaining aside, I say nice price. If this thing isn't thrashed, it should be relatively reliable, fun to drive, and cheap to run and insure. And 15-20 years you can restore it and make a mint when the older, richer members of the Playstation generation make their way to Barrett Jackson. #1985toyotacorolla
THE REASON FOR THE AE86'S DESIRABILITY IS ITS AFFORDABILITY!!.
Sorry for shouting, but at $6500 the price advantage is gone. I dig the AE86, and in particular the GTS, but what I like about it is that it's a fun little car that was inexpensive to buy and maintain. The $6500 asking price kills the first part of that, and having an aspiring drift douche as a previous owner ensures that the second part is a pipe dream as well.
@RLJ676-LS3 Commuter Car - for the environment: I am going to label myself as a dork in this comment... HACHIROKU is japanese for "86". Personally, if I was looking for a "Drift King" style AE86, I would want a hatch with flip-up headlights, paint it white with a black hood and put Tofu Shop stickers on the sides... #1985toyotacorolla
