Is there a commercial version of this? Strip out the interior, beef up the suspension and tires, blank out the windows with steel panels, and you might have a very serviceable ride.

    Here's a compact 7-seater that I wouldn't mind driving:

@maximum-sienna already has a BMW GPS unit:

That Honda is at least vastly more interesting to look at that the Verso, and, being a Honda, it probably has the whole driving dynamics thing nailed pretty well. That might make interesting competition for the Mazda5.

Statement: Toyota is the next GM.

Theory: GM's downward spiral becomes truly apparent around the time the gas crisis hits. Its cars become bland, boring, and unreliable. Very little of its lineup can capture the imagination. Japanese imports nibble away at its profitability. It soldiers on with steadily dwindling market share until sometime in 2010 at the latest.

Toyota has already axed the last of its interesting cars, the MR2 Spyder. Now, though it is still the lumbering behemoth of the car industry, it has nothing to its name that can inspire brand loyalty in the fickle masses beyond its reputation for reliability. Its cars are dull, its styling is a sort of calculated blandness, and Korean imports are making a play for the hearts and wallets of its buyers. All it will take is for that legendary reliability to slip, and Toyota becomes an also-ran.

Maybe I'm stretching here, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Toyota march right down to hell in GM's footsteps over the next 25 years or so.

@Thrashy is tired of this off-season thing: I've agreed with that sentiment for a few years now. When a corporation gets to a certain size there's a group mentality of 'constant'. Though Toyota has some bright minds and is working on a few cool things, there is an overwhelming aura of lucidity seeming to set in. I mean, the Camry, while never a barn-burner, was clean, effective, and unapologetic. It was all business, for people who wanted a no-nonsense vehicle, and it worked.

Now they just seem to be trying to make anime characters on wheels. It's an odd thing to force personality onto a bland product.

Plus, it's a rule of business- nobody can keep hold of the #1 spot forever. It's amazing GM lasted so long, and I'd be surprised if they made it back anytime soon.

OK, Jalopateers, here's the plan. Tonight, we will sneak over to Spokane and rescue the split window Corvette rotting away under the tree. We'll replace it with this Verso thing. The owner of the 'Vette probably doesn't even realize it is there anymore; having become accustom to its presence. By putting something so boring I'm about to fall asleep just thinking about it in the 'Vette's place, we will guarantee the 'Vette won't be missed for at least 2 or 3 years.

They're refusing to provide the European market with a stickshift? Someone, somewhere, has just lit up a crack rock the size of his head.

Besides, it bears mentioning that Kia offers the same thing in a less ugly package (and probably cheaper).

Toyota's formula for 7 passengers in the US is 8" of ground clearance and a 250hp V6.

Toyota clearly knows how to adapt the recipe for their non-CAFE audience.
