So as the Onstar system will tell you where to get another greasy cheeseburger to clog your arteries, will this system guide you to the nearest Panera Bread so you can have a lite lunch as you cruise about in your Camry?
...As an added bonus to Lexus drivers, Zagat's best-in-breed restaurant content will also be available via Destination Assist.
Oh, I guess not. So Toyota drivers will have to search endlessly for healthy food, while Lexus drivers get to have advise as to where to eat provided for them.
I tell you what Jalopnik. I would be more than happy to test this system out and see what type of support they can provide. Please. I'll go pick up the Lexus, test drive it, abuse the in car services, and write woefully about how the in car assistant couldn't guide me to the nearest massage parlor or gentlemens club that has particularly homely women with loose morals, many of whom would be impressed by a man with a car that talks.
Plus for those of you whom know what it is I do for a living, I'm sure I can void the warranty by attaching a variety of Thermofrazzes to it.
@TurboWeasel: I'm not paranoid, I just remember seeing an article on how you can use a cellphone to eavesdrop, and I was wondering if the same could be done with this.
@baldy_pm: GM is looking to be the loss-leader in every category, trucks, cars, telematics, and so forth. They overheard part of Wal-Mart's strategy and didn't realize that some vehicles must be profitable for this to work, Wagoner said "loss-leader across the board, that'll increase sales."
Man, he is looking old. Maybe between being CEO of Toyota and acting in movies like The Last Samurai & Letters From Iwo Jima was just too much for him.
Y'know, didn't Toyota really start to head downhill around 2001? Killing the Celica and MR2, bloating and uglifying the Corolla and Camry, launching giant SUVs while lambasting Detroit for doing the same... Just thinking aloud here.
@FuzzyPlushroom: I don't recall seeing anything overtly negative from Toyota regarding domestics making the behemoths. They took advantage of public perception to be sure but they even took Detroit's side on the gas mileage debates and they could have buried them right there. Easily.
Most of what I saw between the two was fairly even handed and at times even complimentary. At a corporate level at least. I'm certain there was some sniping but it didn't look that overt from a casual observation.
The fact is that profit margin is hard to ignore. Wouldn't be a corporate mindset to not take advantage of those sales. I really don't blame any of them. For that part of it anyway.
I haven't had a Toyota yet that I gave a damn about though. I've been fond of some weird beater crap but the three or four that have passed by me have just been non-engaging at any level. That's why I had to decorate the Geo.
@mytdawg: Yeah, I can't fault them too much for the "we have a green car" thing, but my point revolved around "by the way, we're a green company", despite everything aside from the Prius being comparable in economy to its competitors.
And, as you said, I have to give them credit for supporting Detroit - but then, it wouldn't have been in their best interest not to, as they're a car & truck company, too.
On the other hand, Toyota doesn't have a single product right now that I'd consider "attractive". There's a couple "meh, okay" Lexi, but anything with a Toyota badge these days is nearly guaranteed to be downright fugly.
(That goes for the second-generation Scions, too. Oh, man.)
blogenfreude, that's true - but at least the Armada has the stolen-from-Rambler dropped rear roofline, while the Sequoia makes do with oddly-shaped windows and Durango-style thick-as-shit pillars.
Sure shows what different corporate and social norms there are. On the whole, Toyota's done very well over the past eight years. US executives would be the loudest guys in the room to defend their salaries and pushing fort even bigger bonus packages. Watanabe has a bad two quarters and steps down the next day, right or wrong.
If nothing else, it makes it a lot easier for the rest of the employees to accept the layoffs, cuts, and the lack of hand dryers in the bathrooms. Having a Toyoda take the helm will also insulate upper management a bit, if the next year or two is rocky.
