I know something about black chrome that they didn't consider. The LUZ Solar One plant, a solar thermal power generation facility, relies heavily on black chrome for the receiver surfaces. It's a selective surface: it picks up infrared energy but doesn't re-radiate very well at all, so you can blast heat into it and it just gets hotter and hotter. That's great if it's on a pipe full of heat transfer oil and generating electricity. But on your car's door handles? Boy, that's gonna hurt.
