What is with the Tesla hate around here? Is it just because they are electric, or is it something deeper? They may have done some off things and got involved in some lawsuits, but are absolute amateurs in lying, stealing, backstabbing and deceiving compared to any established car company like GM or Ford.
Here is an American car company which is growing, expanding and hiring and yet peolpe want it dead and buried? They are building cars that customers clearly want, not malaise worthy crapheaps.
The dealerships are a wise move. You can't sell product without having somewhere for people to buy from. It's not about just purchasing, you need servicing, backup and someone who speaks your language. Only the die hards are going to fly to another country, purchase a car which may not be legal on their roads, go through the hassles of shipping and registration. Putting a dealership in Monaco is a masterstroke, if you ask me. In a town where the parking structures have special low-angle exits for supercars, they could easily move hundreds of cars a year.
@brc is never late, because of his v8: ***What is with the Tesla hate around here? Is it just because they are electric, or is it something deeper? ***
Neither - it's simply due to the fact that most everyone here appreciates the irony of them feeling the need to build more dealerships in order to sell even MORE cars that they'll never actually make.
@HoonThatFerrari:
How many times does do you have to be told this for it to sink in? How many bloody verbs do you need?
Tesla has sold, retailed, taken orders for, made, manufactured, produced, manufactured, delivered, shipped, put in customers' hands, handed over the keys to ... 700 cars.
If you are referring to the Model S that Tesla themselves say is 2 years away: they have a working prototype that reporters briefly drove in April and they have approval for $465 million in interest-bearing loans from DoE to make it (as part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program passed by Congress). Making a new car model is incredibly hard, but they've done it once and that model is now profitable. So why specifically do you believe that Tesla will never make the Model S? It seems a lot more real than say the Fisker Karma.
The petrol fumes sure blind the haters around here. The USA is way out front with a $109,000 all-electric all-carbon fiber sports car. It's faster and has a bigger range than the Audi étron fantasy and the other all-electric concepts at Frankfurt but it's available and selling in decent numbers.
Tesla doesn't have "dealerships", they own their sales and service facilities, so they have to open more to sell more. Model S development is a separate issue.
Why does Tesla smell like the dotcom meltdown of the new century? I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. The first one fell on an accelerator and it looked like a helluva ride...when does the other one hit the brakes? I'm sure there's going to be squealing tires and battery fires.
I can't fault Tesla's vision. Get the rich early adopters in and deliver as you can. How long before those fickle trust fund babies rescind their deposits and look elsewhere? Not long, I imagine. Wealthy people can afford the occasional substantial penalty for early withdrawal.
700 cars doesn't suck. But it won't raise many industry eyebrows, not even at a little builder like Subaru, or even Morgan. 700 is nothing, a footnote.
@Elhigh: 700 $100K cars is $70 million. Not much, compared to their capital requirements. But it's most definitely something I wouldn't count on Tesla going away anytime soon, even if gas stays super-cheap as it is now.
Will the S suck? Maybe. But unless the double-dip recession hits next year, they will make some.
We're missing the point here. They have sold 700 cars, not 7,000 or 70,000. What are the chances the the profit from 700 would even be able to build one dealership?
What we have here is some one having a sick dream, and forcing us all to live in it because some other sick douches, have for some ungodly reason, bought in. Why in the hell is Daimler funding Tesla? What in the name of "totally not even related to each other" are they doing that for?
I can't take much more of this. Tesla makes me want to chew on freshly ground glass and shit out novelty stained glass windows. How's that for efficiency ?

@TimTim: That's what I don't get. And that's precisely why I'm doing something about it. By creating a company totally with the power of my ass I am creating something so absurd that it wouldn't make sense not to buy in!
@Jo Schmo: I've heard you can get a better view from right behind. Plus, if you're in, you'll be crapping kaleidescopes too!
Toronto gets a dealership, which means that the center of the universe just got their first Tesla dealer.
I sit here across the country meaning that I'll never see one in the near future cause it can't even make it out of Ontario on a charge much less to a place where they can plug it in. It's both a good and bad thing.

@PowerTryp forever Minardi: Given how many Lotus Elises there are in Calgary, without any kind of dealer network, I am sure the resourceful oil-rich will find a way. I can't wait to witness the irony of oil money whirring around in electric cars.
Yes, this is clearly an impulse purchase that will benefit from more physical locations. Clealy the lack of casual consumer awarness was a hindrance to their selling any more cars. This is a genius move!
@Ash78: Musk publicly announced that he intends on generating the necessary revenue to support the dealerships not by selling cars, but rather Apple products.
@Schm wishes he could bring back the funny. .: I think that Monaco is the kind of place where someone would buy a Tesla on a whim... to drive around for the month. Toronto is filled with intelligent people who have a hunger for the Tesla.

@Elhigh, Morgan produced 640 cars in 2007.
