Scouting Magazine Picks Five Best Vehicles For Playing With Kids

Chevy, GMC Reveal XFE Versions Of Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe And Yukon For 2009

GM's just revealed a whole messload of details on their newest members of the GMT-900-based full-size SUV and truck lineup — the 2009 Chevy Silverado XFE, 2009 Chevy Tahoe XFE, 2009 GMC Sierra XFE and lastly, the 2009 GMC Yukon XFE. What's XFE? It stands for Xtra Fuel Economy and the four relative fuel-sippers join the already class-leading Chevy Cobalt XFE as vehicles GMs achieved added wallet-padding using a combination of mechanical, aerodynamic and mass-reducing enhancements. The tweaks help to deliver a 5% increase in EPA-estimated highway fuel economy and more than 7% improved mileage in city driving. They achieve 15 city and 21 highway mileage ratings versus comparable non-XFE models' 14/20 ratings. The XFE designation is only available on 2WD vehicles equipped with the 5.3-liter V8 mated to a six-speed transmission. But we're told they're able to accomplish the fuel economy bump without a knock to towing ratings. The Tahoe and Yukon are unchanged, while the Silverado and Sierra increase from 6,600 pounds to 7,000 pounds due to the new, six-speed transmission and high-capacity cooling package. Still with us? Good. Hit the jump for our take. More »

This Is Our Country, This Is Our Truck...And It Will Be For Quite Some Time

General Motors is planning to extend the current product cycle on its full-size trucks and SUVs, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. New designs had been expected to come in time for the 2012 model year. However GM spokesperson Tom Wilkinson told the Journal that GM was "looking at the whole product portfolio" in an effort to bring more fuel-efficient vehicles to the U.S. market. While the change in product planning should free up much-needed R&D funds, there's little doubt the lukewarm launch of the latest Toyota Tundra and the gas prices-induced slow-motion 2009 Dodge Ram and 2009 Ford F-150 launch train-wrecks influenced top brass at the Ren Cen. GM Offers Mind-Boggling $4,000 Incentive On Hybrid SUVs

After a massive 39.5% drop in full-size truck sales last month, the General has decided to follow Ford by upping the incentives on the off-roadin' people-haulers. But not only are they dropping more dollars on the hood of the basic one-powertrain models, they're dropping the same levels of cash on the new two-mode hybrid versions of GM's GMT-900 SUV twins — the GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe. While we're not surprised at seeing up to $6,000 thrown on the hood of the non-hybrid Tahoe and Yukon, a $4,000 owner loyalty rebate on the hybrids seems a bit surprising. Isn't this a hybrid sellers' market? Full incentive breakdown after the jump. More »

    HOV-Lane Hybrid Smackdown, Buckeye Edition

    Malaise Redux: Blame the Tatas

The previous malaise era had its clutch of culprits: OPEC, mismanagement at the Federal Reserve, the Vietnam hangover, the Watergate hangover, the Altamont hangover, the hangover hangover. But blame for Malaise 2.0 is being placed squarely and preemptively on the third developing world. Sure, sure, all was well and good when they were caught up in their quaint revolutionary progroms ambitions and impenetrable caste systems. Back then, our Chinese and Indian brothers on the Big Blue Marble got around using swayback scooters, rickshaws, bikes made of pig-iron, occasionally a main battle tank, and their own damn feet. All the sudden, however, they done caught the auto-MO-tive bug. More »

GM Bringing E85, Biodiesel And Gas Sipping Commercial Vehicles To Chicago

General Motors will be showing off a line of commercial vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show featuring GM's latest usable green technology. While we won't be seeing a fuel-cell pursuit package Impala, there will be enough E85, B5 biodiesel and hybrids for everyone. Vehicles getting the treatment include the HHR Panel, Express 3500 Cargo Van, Silverado/Silverado HD, Police Impala and Police Tahoe. We think they should do a hybrid police Tahoe that can operate in "stealth mode" to sneak up on criminals. Press release below the jump. More »

2008 Smart Fortwo: First U.S. Drive

The 2008 Smart Fortwo is burdened with preconceived notions like no car before it. It's not safe. You can't drive it on the highway. It's too small for super sized Americans. It's Green. It's gay. The car was launched in Europe in 1998, so Americans have had a decade to develop these assumptions. Until now, few have driven it, and never on American soil. Yesterday, we did. More »

In 11 categories there were only two pickups for Detroit automakers: Chevy Silverado 1500 (Best Full Size Pickup) and Tahoe (Best Large SUV). Honda picked up five awards, BMW picked up two and Mazda tied with two cars. There's nothing quite shocking with the picks, as few are going to be surprised to see the Honda Accord Best Midsize Car or the Fit make Best Economy Car. Jay Leno Explains To Britain Why The Tahoe Hybrid Really Is Green

Interestingly, Leno claims that there is a rush on used mega-SUVs in the States, as bass boat owners and those with 14 children fear new ones will soon be outlawed. [Times Online]

General Motors to Send Hybrids to Middle East

The General is very happy to announce that it'll be exporting some of its two-mode Tahoes and Malibu to the Middle East; the Middle East is happy to announce that it doesn't want them and is sending them back (j/k). The Dubai Roads & Transit Authority will be taking possession of the vehicles to use as fleet cars and cabs as part of a test program. The great thing about hybrids is they only slow our dependence on oil in the Middle East, making sure we'll care about them forever. We're actually not being fair to Dubai, which only receives less than 3% of its annual revenues from natural gas and petroleum. The hilarious press release below the jump: More »

    Jalopnik Drives Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

We recently got a chance behind the wheel of a road-test model 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid. We can now confirm that yes, it is still an SUV as well as being a hybrid. At the heart of the Chevrolet's two-mode hybrid system, developed with BMW and the erstwhile DaimlerChrysler, is a transmission that brings together the planetary and fixed gears of an autobox with dual electric motors. That same transmission joins forces with a V8 engine to retain the part of SUV folks like, with the added bonus of an uptick in fuel efficiency. More »

GM May Subsidize $10,000 Two-Mode Hybrid Powertrain

Automotive News is reporting the General's new dual-mode hybrid powertrain, which has two electric motors to assist the engine, and is one of what may be up to three new hybrid powertrain systems for the General, costs $10,000. The dual-mode hybrid system is designed to be dropped into the upcoming hybrid versions of the GMT-900 twins, the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe. Although considering the Toyota Highlander hybrid costs about $8,000 more than the base model Toyota Highlander, this sounds pretty much in line with the rest of the industry. But, to make a more steal-like deal out of the dual-mode expected to cut 25% of the fuel consumption in the big SUV's, we're also hearing GM's looking to subsidize the cost. Sounds like a smart marketing move to us but we'll see if it translates to a sticker price that'll push big beasts out of dealer lots. More »

Foosical the Musical: GM has Hybrid Tahoe Pimped for MTV

Ain't product placement a bee-otch(TM)? On the media-soaked occasion of the MTV Music Awards, GM yesterday unveiled a promotional hybrid Tahoe created by celeb shops Chip Foose shop and Unique Performance. The "pimped out" (quotation marks GM's) Tahoe, which has a powder-coated billet grille, two-tone paint, Foose badging, dual stainless steel exhaust tips, chrome side molding, lowered suspension and other tweaks — will transport an as-yet-unnamed celebrity to the MTVMAs. The truck is only one segment in a multithreaded product-placement plan for Chevrolet that involves the General supplying the show with a fleet of mildly customized E85-fueled 2007 Tahoes, Avalanches and Suburbans for transporting talent and sponsoring the pre-show "Top of the Rock" concert and the "Chevy Fly-Cam," which may or may not be a tiny camera mounted on one of Kirk Kerkorian's diamond-encrusted helicopters. Still, with the Ricky Bobby / Wonder Bread juggernaut in full effect, GM's bid for logo-soup dominance could come up short. Let us know; we'll be busy that night, sticking 10-penny nails into our eyes. More »

Spy Photos: GMT-900 Chevy Tahoe And GMC Yukon SS?

That's what our Paukert-ed up friends at the blog down the road which winds are telling us this AM. They're claiming what you've got in crop-top-drop-shot above, and through the link below is none other than the GMT-900 edition of the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon in some kind of "performance package", maybe even the SorrySucker SuperSexyBack SuperSport packages. But Winding Road asks the same questions we do — is this just a trim 'n tape job, or some real performance enhancements? Considering our experiences with some of Chevy's more recent SS models — and comments from more than a few engineers — we're guessing maybe not so much. But we really do like the camo job on the GMC — taping a Chevy bowtie to the front grille. 'Cause nothing reminds us more of badge-engineering than actually dropping the old badge back on top. Winding Road's got pics of both GMT-900 SUV's — hit them up for the deets. More »

Chevy's Make Your Own Tahoe Ad Backfires, or Does It?

One of the most active stories of the day has been that of visitors to GM's "Make Your Own Tahoe Commercial" site creating irreverant works, like those some Jalopnik readers did back when we first posted the link. Would-be parodists have fired at the Tahoe from several directions: environmentalists tweak its size and gas mileage showing, while unaffiliated wiseasses use the demonstrative-asshole or penis-envy angles. The obvious conclusion is that GM's online viral ad campaign has backfired on the company, subverting its messaging and possibly even damaging the Tahoe's brand. But what if it hasn't? What if it's become one of the most successful online campagns ever launched? More »

Even so, I managed to reduce the new Chevrolet Tahoe s nominal fuel economy to 11 miles per gallon. It wasn t hard; I just leaned on the monster s go pedal here and there, and floored it everywhere else. Tahoe Hybrid to be Produced In Texas

GM Display Closedown Due to 60 Minutes Coverage

Conspiracy theorists were abuzz about why the General sealed off its Detroit show display last night and pulled the Tahoe Hybrid off its pedestal. Guesses ranged from the Trilateralesque (e.g., PR damage control spurred by some media type finding out the show Tahoe's hybrid powerplant was faked) to the mundane (e.g., a group of analysts were getting a private tour). In reality, according to the New York Times, GM gave the "60 Minutes" crew the run of the place for those hours, likely as a way to state its product case in the face of a CBS News hatchet job.
G.M. has temporarily closed off its display to accomodate the filming of a 60 Minutes episode. Speculation is that rather than just letting CBS crucify the company and its beleaguered chief Rick Wagoner, G.M. is hoping to ameliorate the damage from the report.
For "60 Minutes'" sake, we hope they got to check under the Tahoe Hybrid's hood — and knew what to look for. More »

    GM Reveals New Chevrolet Tahoe

Chevrolet unveiled its long-awaited, next-generation 2007 Tahoe this morning, providing a solid anticlimax for those who'd been waiting for it. Buyers of full-size SUVs will be pleased to find GM's displacement-on-demand technology has boosted preliminary mileage of the 5.3-liter Vortec V8 (standard on 4WD models) to 20.5 mpg. Of course, GM is already overselling the benefits of DoD. "It not only delivers better fuel economy than some smaller vehicles, it does so with the full capability expected of a full-size SUV. That means you can tow a boat out to your favorite lake on the weekend and take the kids to school during the week without worry, was the statement issued by Gary White, GM's vice president of fullsized trucks. White fails to mention that, unless the boat is a bathtub trawler, the engine will likely use full displacement, meaning mileage of around 14mpg. But hey, it's unveiling day; we won't spoil the party. Smoke up, Johnny. More »
