1997 McLaren F1 Auctions for $4 Million
Proving that vintage Italian iron isn't the only automotive investment to command multi-million dollar returns, a 1997 McLaren F1 supercar hit the equivalent of $4 million at a recent London RM auction. The British-built McLaren was once the fastest car in the world, and retailed for about a million in the late 1990s. This particular example had 270 miles on the clock and was reportedly the last new F1 built; regardless, the sale price is still close to $2 million over the car's appraised value. Just goes to show you all that's needed is the right buyer. [Motor Authority] -

Alfa Romeo 8C GTA Mule Spotted Near Nurburgring
Rumor has it that Alfa Romeo will be building a special 8C supercar dubbed the GTA to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary, and one reports suggests that this lightly taped mule seen near the Nurburgring is that car. What makes this red 8C different from any other 8C? The exhaust note has been described as "darker," which would aptly describe the Ferrari California's 4.3-liter direct-injection V8 that reportedly powers the rumored 8C GTA. Whether or not the GTA actually sees the light of day, we'd love to see additional speculation just for an excuse to post more 8C pictures.

Nissan Raises MSRP On GT-R By $7K, Base Model To Now Start At Almost $77K
Apparently forged blocks of badass have jumped in price lately, because raw material costs are said to be behind a $7,000 price increase on the Nissan GT-R. With the bump, the base GT-R will now set you back $76,840, while the Premium runs $79,090; add another grand for destination and handling, along with whatever obscene markup your local Nissan dealer wants to throw in for himself. If you got your GT-R order in before September 5 you just saved yourself a bunch of scratch, as the new pricing doesn't apply to orders already in dealer hands prior to that date. Full release from Nissan after the jump. More » -

2008 Gumpert Apollo Type S
Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Today we're going to prove that DOTS isn't just about old cars, nor is it just about daily drivers or beaters with potatoes for gas caps. If it's parked in public within the city limits of Alameda, it's fair game. And whaddya know- here's a shiny new Gumpert Apollo Type S, parked in front of one of the hangars at the former Alameda Naval Air Station!

Speaking to Popular Mechanics, product development engineer Ron Cerven revealed that not only will the car be entered in the Automotive X Prize, but that it could be available to purchase as soon as late next year.

Cracked Up Noble M400 On eBay, Maybe Bigger Brakes Are In Order
Would you love to have a Noble but can't wait for the M600 and don't have the scratch to buy a new M400? It's your lucky day because there's a gently crash 2007 Noble M400 just waiting for you in Indiana. On top of being a sweet shade of p**sy magnet yellow and having only 8706 miles, it only needs a radiator, condenser, windshield and some super easy fiberglass work at the nose. At least, that's what the seller says. We suspect this one might have lived a very hard 8700 miles. But hey, only a $35,000 reserve! Act soon while supplies last. (Thanks Jon)

Mega Track, Our Kind Of Crossover
There's not much middle ground to crossovers as they are usually either depressingly awful or brilliantly cool. On one side you've got frumpy FWD tall wagons, which have zero off-road capabilities yet manage to be crappy on-road as well. Then on the other side you've got true dual-purpose vehicles, able to impress on a winding tarmac backroad or a lumpy dirt trail. So while some may be duped into thinking a Jeep Compass is the best of both worlds, we'd much prefer this, the Mega Track. It's a supercar that can do whatever it wants to, wherever it wants to.

Porsche Carrera GT Eats It While Driving Onto Trailer
Here we find a perfect example as to why using those 2x8's you've got lying around behind the shed to load a half million dollar Porsche Carrera GT is a bad idea. We're not positive of the categorization here, but "epic fail" might be as close as we can get for everybody involved in setting up this cringe-worthy scenario. You can almost hear the carbon fiber chassis going all crunchy right at the end. Ouch. [VideoMax (NSFW banner ads)] -

BMW M1 Homage Concept Revealed!
Remember the BMW M1 from the late 70's and early 80's? Sure, we all do — how could someone forget the only BMW mid-engined homologated racer? Well, for you fans of that MotorWorken hotness, we've got an exciting bit of news out of the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este, an Italian gathering hosting precious metal from all over the world. The Germans suprised everyone by bringing a piece of racing hotness hearkening back to those halcyon days of the late 70's — kind of a thirtieth anniversary present to lovers of the old M1. It's called the BMW M1 Homage concept, a modern-day interpretation of the mid-engined Bavarian exotic. So is this flame-surfaced M1 successor a future classic? Well, it's hard to say.
