Great crumple zone action but what was that part about sweving and the rear end getting airborne?

PS Here in Virginia, "swerved to hit a deer" = "lost control of vehicle."

You could have steel wrapped around the edge of your windows, and it wouldn't add diddly to the rigidity of the car, cause it's not a significant piece of metal.

But instead you have that much more steel in your door frame, and now you don't have to unzip your trousers to blow your nose after the wreck. Thanks, Subaru!

It leaks, it's thirsty, but I kinda like my Fozzie.

Having seen the aftermath of what happens when the deer ends up in the passenger area, I'll take the chance and swerve.

Friend of mine hit a deer a couple years ago in a truck, I guess it jumped right before impact or something because it came up into the cab with him, hit him in the chest, broke every last rib, punctured his right lung, collapsed the left and just generally f*cked him all up. He survived but spent three months in the hospital and has racked up about $350k in medical expenses (luckily they're waiving quite a bit of it)... I'll take my chances with the tree.

...and this is why it's exceedingly expensive to insure Subarus.

@TV's Paul Y.: No doubt. Bastards like this, with all their mods and "swerving from a deer" (sure!) make me get all stabby when I have to pay the insurance bill on my bone stock WRX wagon.

Fun costs money, I understand. I just wish other people's actions didn't cost me.

@cyclopticgaze: I used to have a base-model Impreza (2005), and sure, I bought it when I was 23, and it was cheaper than a WRX or STi, but almost anything that stickers under $50k is cheaper to insure. It's absurd.

    Dear Moron,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your dedication to excessive speed and driver error. Without you, and reckless young men of your ilk, our dreams would rarely come to pass. Thankfully, your inability to avoid wildlife safely, and your propensity for Jaegerbombs and incorrect tire choice has once again borne sweet sweet fruit for those of us who will find a phoenix in your ashes. By all means, continue to bolt on useless carbon fibre and go ass-end into trees, for it is through your incompetence that we may beat M3s at the track.

    Our junkyard hearts overfloweth.

    Sincerely,

-Association of guys waiting to swap in a EJ25

Two friends of mine were driving home from a party one time and right after getting onto the highway, having just turned around the onramp, saw an armadillo run to the middle of the road. The driver swerved, only for the armadillo to run and get under his C200K. The car spun into the roadside forest, narrowly missing trees and all that, coming to a stop after a couple of circles, suffering some heavy but not critical damage.

They both walked away, and one graciously took a cigarette from a concerned driver to "calm his nerves". The police on the scene were just in disbelief at the cause of the accident. Amazingly, the armadillo also walked away, mostly unscathed. To this day, I think they still both suffer from armadillophobia.

The Beatles predicted this. Could they be our modern Nostradamus?

    {VERSE 1}

Picture yourself in a car on a highway,

With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.

A deer runs out, you swerve quite quickly,

    A crunch and metal flies.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,

    Towering over your head.

Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,

    And she's fine.

    {CHORUS}

Loony in the STI with all wheel drive,

Loony in the STI with all wheel drive,

Loony in the STI with all wheel drive,

    Ah... Ah...

Like some of you guys already pointed out, this story smells a bit. The circumstantial evidence is just a little too compelling to believe there was actually a deer in the vicinity.

"The rear end came off the ground...?" Really? Because this sounds exactly like something I would've told my dad when I was about 17. My guess is that they were driving way too fast and were impaired by alcohol. Nothing good happens after midnight, right?

Anyhow, I'm glad they all survived.

Raise your hand if you have used "swerved to miss a deer" as the excuse for whatever fun you where not supposed to be having.

My wife hit a deer recently, didn't swerve. Luckily, it didn't end up in her lap. It flew up in the air 15 feet and landed in a field. Drove the car home.

As long as the car is not too low to the ground, you should never swerve to miss an animal.

Rear end came off the ground? I somehow get the feeling that's not a stock sway bar under there. Someone over at the insurance agency is having a good laugh this morning.

@theart: You want to know the worst part? He'll probably get a wholesale check for $15k or $20k...which probably won't even cover the aftermarket stuff, never mind the car itself.

That's one of the dangers of excessive modding, unless you're up front with the insurance co and are willing to pay the higher rates for your additions.
