I've seen the 'Plain Brown Wrapper' Studebaker run the 1/4 mile (pictured above and in the links). Many a big-block muscle car has been shut down by this little beast.
The first time I saw it run, it was up against a 455 CI Buick GS Stage 1 (both were running in factory stock, even the tires were the correct sizes - no slicks, but it still appeared to be a David vs. Goliath moment). Everyone snickered when this little brown box of a car pulled up next to the big yellow Buick at the lights. The Buick's 455 sounded like a real powerhouse, putting out over 500 lb/ft, the Stude: more like a mild-mannered Sunday driver. As the staging lights went on, the snickering from the crowd was replaced by a strange, high-pitched whine from the Studebaker.
When the green light went on, the Stude simply disappeared from the big Buick (which ran a very respectable time as well). The crowd in the stands picked their jaws up off the floor, and for the rest of the weekend, the little Stude was greeted by cheers from the crowd every time it went to the line (everybody loves an underdog story). #studebaker
Those blown Hawks would run 0-60 in about seven and a half seconds -- still respectable today, and back then it would out-drag just about any car except a Corvette. #studebaker
I was driving my Saab 96 across Oklahoma on I-40 one fine day about thirty years ago, on a long uphill stretch. I looked in the mirror and said, "What the Hell is that?"
A Studebaker Hawk passed me... towing another Studebaker Hawk. #studebaker
The Avanti is probably my number-one dream car. Just look at it. It's gorgeous, striking, and subtle all at the same time. And it's American. It's a jumble of curves and lines that somehow merge to become something beautiful. #studebaker

@Murilee Martin: Murilee, I think it's just coincidence that the Grateful Dead and the Late Studebaker "S" symbol are the same colors.
During the early 70's though, a few of the "flower children" I knew thought the Mercedes-Benz symbol was a Peace Sign. Yes, i knew more than a few people who followed the "Peace,Love,Dope" mantra. The lovin' was very easy then. #studebaker
I knew a guy who had a collection of Studebakers. His daily driver was a light green, mid '50's Stude pick-up. He had a building full of Larks, Hawks, and lots of parts.
He was a nice guy but kinda creepy. He was murdered several years ago. #studebaker

You would have to bring up Studebaker. How about this one, the last one to roll of the South Bend line.
(If you ask real nice I'll show you my pictures from the Studebaker museum's basement.) #studebaker

@UDMan: Is it my imagination, or did the Grateful Dead rip off the Studebaker logo for the Steal Your Face album cover? #studebaker

I've heard of going to extreme measures for rare cars/parts, but that might be crossing the line.
...
Well, at least in the case of Studebakers anyway.... #studebaker

I was mistaken, my friend's dad's '64 Daytona is only an R1, but hey. Friend's '65 is, unfortunately, equipped with a Chevrolet 283. #studebaker
