My biggest disappointment this year hasn’t been a shoddily built rental car. It was a brand new Porsche 911. I am tired of feeling what amounts to a strong fart through the round object that I’m supposed to use to steer a vehicle. I want to feel everything! All of it! Even if I have to grunt at low speeds.
Car steering has made absolutely incredible advances in accuracy and ease over the past few years, but that often has come with sacrifices in one other area.
The whole point of Nissan dragging my pale, pale ass halfway across the world was so they could show off a bunch of new tech they're developing. And show off they did, with prototypes and inflatable cars and cutaway engines and all sorts of good stuff like that.
The basic principles of hydraulically-assisted power steering have stayed the same for decades. Even today this Army-produced clip about how a series of pumps and valves help point the wheels is just as relevant and informative as it was for skinny-armed recruits back in the Fifties.
