Yeah. I think the monster was the Director of Broadcast Programming at NBC that didn't like the original pilot and didn't pick up the show until Roddenberry (or maybe Desilu) recast and shot another pilot. A disfigured Captain Pike was used to stitch the storyline together to salvage footage (actor Jeffrey Hunter had long since moved on). A younger Pike will appear in J.J. Abrams' new movie.
