The Aptera, which has been the poster child for the entire Automotive X Prize, is forgetting about trying to win that $10 million trophy and getting famous elsewhere—and that elsewhere is on the big screen. Recent reports are saying that the Aptera has been spotted on the set of the new Star Trek movie.

The new Star Trek flick, directed by J.J. Abrams and slated for an early May release, tells the story of James T. Kirk's youth and education at Star Fleet Academy. Word has it that Kirk and his homies cruise the campus for hot tail in the Aptera, which in the real world will allegedly get 30 mpg. Who needs a dilithium-guzzling shuttlecraft? I wonder if Kirk & Co. will exercise the Prime Directive with the fetching young cadets they cruise... Actually, it doesn't surprise me that the Aptera would wind up on the big screen. It looks as if it was borrowed from the future. The Sci Fi Channel should just go ahead and build a whole show around it. [Livescience]

<![CDATA[What's The Geekiest Car Thing You've Done Lately?]]>

Besides spending countless hours on a blog devoted to any and everything with four wheels, of course. I just got back from supper with a fellow auto-journo and with the lone exception of ordering food, our conversation didn't deviate from cars for a second. "Is a 208 even a Ferrari? I mean, come on!" Our obsessiveness and behavior differs from Trekkies (or is that Trekkers?) only because of focus and how we dress. Though apparently I'm trying to change that last bit. Yes friends, I broke down over the weekend and bought a pair of wrestling shoes. To my attractive, non-pistonhead friends I will explain how wrasslin' kicks are dope for weightlifting and boxing. But to you nerds – brother dorks – you haven't experienced a downshift until you've done so in a pair of these.

The interface between your left foot and the clutch improves 100% as the thin sole allows your toes to fully articulate. Heeling und toeing is a dream because of the wide, grippy and flexible outsole. Possibly best of all, there are large pieces of fabric that Velcro in place over the laces. Meaning that your shoes will never come untied while cornering again. Plus, they are just so light and tightly wrapped – left foot breaking, here I come! True, my new Asics have zero arch support, are ugly, uncomfortable and crappy for walking around in. And I'm as likely to start boxing again as I am to begin Lamas classes. Still, I love 'em as much as certain folks love their Romulan helmets. You?

<![CDATA[LA Auto Show: Saturn Hybrid Vue Photon Powered!]]>

Fresh on the heels of the Lexus hybrid powered by tubes of captured light itself is this Saturn Vue, obviously harnessing the power of mere photons. The cutaway clearly shows multicolored bands of light coursing through the powerplant of this super advanced Saturn hybrid. We suspect dilithium crystals are at the heart of this system, and that GM is not at all lamenting Kerkorian's recent decisions. GM is merely preparing for the Captain James T. Kirk era. Stay tuned for planets full of simpler folks being duped out of their crystals, and green models in gold bikinis at future GM car show booths.
