    1) Figure out a way to safely attach passenger capsules to the SRBs.

    2) Charge less than what Virgin Galactic, etc. are planning to for rides.

    3) ?

    4) Profi...oh, right, NASA's a government agency.

I would actually rather hope that NASA can come up with something slightly more efficient than the current system for future missions. I was always partial to the Delta Clipper design myself, looks like something from Wall•e and is entirely self-contained.

Don't they leak about 100 gallons/minute of rocket fuel when they are sitting on the pad, and then expand to fit solid? I wonder what the life expectancy of the metal fatigue is?

@speakerboy: SR-71s seemed to deal with it okay.

@speakerboy: I think you're thinking of the SR-71, which leaks like a sieve on the ground, but then expands during flight and tightens up.

The SRBs use solid rocket fuel which can't leak. The external fuel tank and orbiter use liquid propellants, which are liquified (very cold) hydrogen and oxygen. While on the pad, it will vent some hydrogen and oxygen due to the heat of the atmosphere on the tanks causing some of the liquified fuel to heat up and become gaseous.

Nicely timed, TAI. I will be watching the Space Shuttle Endeavour launch Saturday on STS-127 from the beach outside my condo. I will try to get some decent pictures to send to you.

Actually, the Space Shuttle replacement (the Constellation Program) will use a Saturn V-like Ares rocket (scheduled for a test flight in late August or early September) and is being patterned after the Apollo launch delivery system. This is necessary for lunar and Mars missions. A smaller rocket will be used for earth orbit missions.

@The Auto Insider: Will do! I only have the little point-and-shoot, so no guarantees on how they will turn out.
