    As so often, posts and comments only consider the wide wide USofA. I agree that a Smart is unnecessary in most US cityscapes, but this car is being tested in the UK, in London, where it makes perfectly sense, where the low top speed is more than you will ever need, where parking spots are few and small...

    I'm trying to remember which magazine said that instead of the bailout, we could buy every (think they said 17 and 18?)-year-old in America an electric car.


    They showed a line drawing of a Smart.


    I had half a mind to write in and bitch, bitch, bitch.


    But now I can't. Alas.

    I almost rear-ended one of these little crapboxes at the home depot. It was parked in a spot between a minivan and a Dodge Compensator, I go to pull in at 20mph in true ricer fashion, and this asshole parks this lunchbox all the way up to the front of the space, giving the illusion that it was empty. I still managed to get my GALVENIZED screws, tho.

    I'm going to buy two of these, and race them around my living room.


    Maybe we can start an indoor racing series featuring Smart cars. I'd suggest a Tesla, but no one wants to play in imagination-land anymore.

    I'm astounded every time I see someone driving a Smart in the US. It's ridiculously small, slow and goofy-looking, yet still costs $12k for the cheapest model and only gets 36 MPG combined.


    Pointless.

    @FromaBuick6: There is definitely a market for cars of this size in cities like NY or SF, where 99% of someone's driving is in the city. As hard as it is to believe, parking is a huge inconvenience - many people would be willing to sacrifice the comfort of a larger vehicle for more convenient exterior dimensions. However, I agree about the price. If they can drop it to $10,000 or below, we'd see a lot more of these. At the current price, the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris or Nissan Versa are more attractive alternatives.
