@BLS: A horse's power output varies over the time period you're measuring. Horses can produce up to maybe 15 hp in bursts but cannot maintain that. Over time, their maximum output is probably pretty close to 1 hp.
@BLS: yeah, but what's that equal in boiler horsepower? or metric? bhp? with the way people (car companies/anyone who makes an engine) throw (manipulate) numbers around ... who knows.
@Alfisted: You have it correct, a horse can have a sustained output of about one horsepower over a given time like an hour or a day, the peak output is substantially higher, but cannot be continued for more than a few minutes. An average healthy human can have an peak output of just over a 1 hp for a short period of time, but can only sustain about .1 hp over a long period of time.
@Flathead Smith: I've heard that some top athletes like Lance Armstrong can sustain one horsepower for several hours, but you're right that the typical person can't do this. Most cyclists can sustain about 200 watts or 1/4 hp, or about what it takes to go 20 mph on level ground.
Humans actually are really good endurance athletes and can out-last a lot of animals. This is how some tribes in Mexico still hunt -- by chasing a deer or other animal until it tires and collapses.
The "perfect ending" would be for the coffin to be flung out the back at the apogee of the drift as if shot from a Jai alai cesta, launched over a creek Dukes of Hazzard style, land on the other side by crashing through a fruit stand and/or stack of boxes, skid across the grass and then plop into the grave like a golf ball. Preferably on fire.
