Today, Nice Price or Crack Pipe has a GT-R wannabe that's been terrorizing Tokyo since 1970.

The Skyline dates back to days before Nissan purchased the Prince Motor Company, but despite its birth parentage, the car is one of the best known of its adopted parent's children. First introduced in 1968, the C1 model was one of the last developed under Prince, though it was introduced post-merger, and arrived with a Nissan badge on its boxy ass.

By 1970, when today's candidate rolled off the Tochigi assembly line, a new model and engine was made available- the 120-bhp 2.0-litre six powered 2000GT-X. Officially the KC10, the 2000GT-X offered an additional 15-kabukis over the 1.8-litre four that had previously been the top engine offering.

Today's JDM refugee is a GT-X with some mods made to make it look the part of a GT-R. The rear flares and black-painted alloys help it play the part, as does the expected PMC.S sicker. But pop the hood and things look less GT-R and more GT-Are your Kidding? In place of the GT-R's 160-bhp DOHC 2-litre is the stock single cam unit. Despite that disappointment, the engine is clean and original, from its SU-aping Mikunis, to the creepy sperm-like plug wires wriggling over the brushed aluminum cam cover. Backing up the 2000GT's little six is Nissan's 4-speed that will feel very familiar to anyone that's driven a 510 or 240Z. The shifter is topped by a period-correct beer-tap lever, and falls readily to your. . . left hand. One bit of JDM authenticity you'll need to get used to is leaning waaay over to get your food at the drive-thru, as the car is right-hand drive.

Overall, the car looks good in pictures, but the seller does the honest thing and has included some shots of the bubbly rust that permeates cars of a certain age, much like liver spots do people who have managed to stick around as long. That being said, there doesn't appear to be anything that would require a firm understanding of ordering parts in Japanese, or a wallet deep enough to afford the shipping of body panels across the Pacific.

So, it's not a real GT-R (and in fact there never were any 1970 GT-Rs), it's got some uglies hiding under the paint, and you have to drive it from the passenger seat- although that could make for vexing of those pesky red-light cameras. But does all that outweigh the fact that it's a pretty cool car, and there just aren't that many of these things rolling around here where the buffalo roam? And does that make the $20,000 asking price seem like a deal? Or, is that a penthouse-worthy price to view this Skyline?

<![CDATA[It's A Nice Day For A Skyline Wedding]]> Love for Nissan's Skyline sports car is well known, but one couple took it further than any other, getting married in the midst of several generations of Nissan Skylines. We won't hesitate to say this one's a keeper.

The wedding joined two car nuts together in holy matrimony, amidst some of their dearest friends and hardware. The bride's Z-car was used in the procession as the grooms Skyline GTS-T watched on from a turntable. Friend's cars were in attendance to round out the ceremony. Congratulations on the nuptials you crazy kids. (Hat tip to Crizomatic)

<![CDATA[2009 FIA GT Racers Trot Out For Spring Testing In France]]> The 2009 season of the FIA GT series kicked off this week at the Paul Ricard Circuit debuting the new Nissan GT-R GT1, Ford GT1, Audi R8 LMS, Alpina B6 GT3 and Ferrari 430 Scuderia.

There's been news of a GT-R coming to GT1 for some time, but this past week finally made it true thanks in part to both Nissan's motorsport division, NISMO and Gigawave Motorsport. Though news of Godzilla's GT1 debut was impressive, it wasn't the only new entry in the field. Matech Racing also brought out its new Ford GT1, which, along with the GT-R GT1, is first to meet the FIA's new 2010 regulations. Two days and 49 cars attended the test day event at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France including a multitude of GT1 Corvette C6.Rs, Saleen S7Rs, Maserati MC12s as well as GT3 Porsche RSRs and Ferrari F430s.

During the vehicle reveal press conference, Hans Reiter of Reiter Engineering, best known for their Lamborghini Gallardo GT3, gave the press this little jewel of info;

"As some of you may know, Lamborghini has recently released a new version of the Murciélago, SV version, 670 hp, 6.7 litre, and this will be our car for the GT1 World Championship. Unfortunately, the car is not ready yet as the car was only launched in March, but should be ready for the second part of the season."

Look for the first race of the FIA GT series to kick off at Silverstone next month which will feature the FIA GT Championship, FIA GT3 European Championship, GT4 European Cup and finally, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.

FIA GT Press Release:
The 2009 season of the FIA GT Championship got underway with the official media launch, which took place at the Paul Ricard HTTT circuit, within two days of official testing. Cars from the FIA GT Championship, the FIA GT3 European Championship and the GT4 European Cup were entered for the test days, with a total of 49 cars expected to take part over the two days. A press conference was followed by the unveiling of the first two cars built according to the 2010 GT1 technical regulations : the Nissan GT-R and the Ford GT1.

During the launch press conference, Stephane Ratel, CEO of SRO Motorsports Group, promoter of both the FIA GT Championship and the FIA GT3 European Championship, outlined the changes for the 2009 season. Despite the difficult economic times, an FIA GT calendar reduced to eight events, the removal of development tyres, along with a generous team assistance package, have helped to assure full-season grids of 42 cars – with 12 brands represented – for the FIA GT3 European Championship, as well as an entry list of 25 cars for the FIA GT Championship, including full-season entrants and race-by-race competitors.

Ratel then continued with a comprehensive update on the GT1 World project. The plans made over recent years reached a new level today, not only with the unveiling of the first two cars built according to the 2010 GT1 technical regulations, and with the announcement of a third, but with a full presentation of the planned Championship and the status with the FIA.

The 2010 GT1 World project aims to set up a World Championship title for independent teams, based on the FIA balance of Performance system which has proved so successful in keeping close competition and balanced costs in the GT1 and GT3 categories. A truly global programme aims at 12 events in 12 countries, on five continents. Letters of intent have been received from circuits in Argentina, Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The single GT1 class would consist of six brands, a maximum of 24 cars, two cars per team and two teams per brand. Only full-season entries would be eligible, as is currently the case in GT3. The teams would receive substantial support for the long-distance events. With a general format of two one-hour races per event, a qualifying race and a Championship race, there would be one winner per weekend. However, the continuation of the 24-hour race at Spa would maintain the endurance nature of the cars.

As for the cars, the 2010 technical regulations have been drafted in collaboration with the ACO and approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council in December, to be applied in the FIA Championships and in the ACO series. The 2010 GT1 cars can be developed by the manufacturers or independent tuners. A compromise between the cost-effective approach successfully developed with GT3, the detailed technical regulations of GT2 and the need to have distinctive cars, 2010 GT1 cars can be specifically built, an evolution of existing GT3 cars or a 2010 GT2 car with a performance kit.

Gabriele Cadringher, representing the FIA, confirmed the situation : "The FIA does not give World titles easily. There have been months of discussions with Stephane, but the contract with the FIA is now ready, and all the conditions have been laid down to move to this new stage. The conditions which need to be fulfilled include ten races on three continents minimum, which looks like being the case, four different brands represented, which I don't think will be a problem, and 18 cars at least on the grid, which is up to Stephane. We think that Stephane has all the chances to get this. We will monitor him, and give him help on the technical and sporting side. And we would like to wish him good luck; we look forward to good races in the future."

At the end of the press conference, Mr Sanada, the president of NISMO, and Henry Barczynski of Gigawave Motorsport, NISMO's partner team, unveiled the Nissan GT-R, while Martin Bartek of Matech Concepts unveiled the Ford GT1.

"It is a wonderful experience to work with Nissan. It's going to be a tremendous year and I know we will learn a lot from them, and next year, we are aiming to win the Championship !" explained Henry Barczynski.

Martin Bartek commented : "When I met Stephane about the GT1 project in late 2007, the goal we set and agreed at that time was to build a spectacular GT1 car but with the running budget of a GT3 equivalent car. This is what I think we have managed to achieve in one-year's development time. We have built two cars, one which will be entered by ourselves, and the second which will be entered by MarcVDS Racing."

Afterwards, Hans Reiter confirmed that he would also be building a new generation GT1 car : "As some of you may know, Lamborghini has recently released a new version of the Murciélago, SV version, 670 hp, 6.7 litre, and this will be our car for the GT1 World Championship. Unfortunately, the car is not ready yet as the car was only launched in March, but should be ready for the second part of the season," he explained.

<![CDATA[No-Street 1999 Nissan GT-R SKYLINE R34 for $119,990!]]> Get ready to get 2fast and 2furious with a 200MPH+ JDM TIME ATTACK CAR JUN AUTO WORKS GT-R! HA, HA, HA!

Okay, right out front, this car is not street legal in the US, but that never stopped anybody, right? I mean, Vin Diesel is all about the clandestine street racing scene, and he's been in, what, three of those movies, so how tough could it be?

The Skyline model name originally appeared on a Prince luxury sedan in 1957. But we're not too interested in those stodgy, old, upright, bank-president specials, we want something a little more modern, and a lot faster. Though Nissan never officially sold the Skyline GT-R in the land of the free and the home of the debt-enslaved, a good number have made it over while still keeping their JDM freak flags flying.

Here, enjoying some rest and relaxation in the Bahamas, is a '99 R34 V-spec, specially modified by Legendary Supercar builder Jun Auto Works. It's sporting the RB26DETT 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve straight six with a claimed 1,000 ponies at the rear tires, and a 200MPH+ top end. For your damn-near one hundred and twenty grand, you'll get that serial-killer of a motor, plus composite doors, hood, decklid and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler to keep the tires on the tarmac, and the air nice and clean for everybody behind you.

But really, they'll actually be beside you, won't they, as this car screams for some drift action? And as it's a track-only ride, you'll get plenty of opportunity to test its polar inertia, and the coefficient of friction of the combined tires' contact patch, in doing so. AWD and the Getrag 6-speed row-your-own will keep you in charge, no matter how you choose to lay that power down. And speaking of which, there's that sentence in red, about half-way down the page: Car Ran 9:40s in the quatermile! No, they can't spell, but sweet jebus, you want this car.

Now back to that price. $119,990 will buy you a nice house, if you choose to buy where there's 7%+ unemployment. That'd also put you behind the wheel of a brand new Nissan GT-R, with enough left over to cover the penicillin shots for all the STDs you'll get due to the car's carnal attraction. And this GT-R's not even street legal here in the states, so cruising Woodward Boulevard, much less the Dairy Queen over in Mount Pilot, is out of the question, unless you want to play Dukes of Hazard with the local po-po. And one last thing to keep in mind, is that the $119,990 price tag requires PayPal. Yeah, right.

So is $119,990 a Nice Price for the hottest thing to come out of Japan since the wasabi doughnut? Or should we be looking up the Japanese for Crack Pipe about now?

<![CDATA[GT-R Wagon? Meh. GT-R El Camino? Epic Win!]]> Paying attention last night? You may have noticed the first R35 GT-R wagon. Pretty good. What's better? How about this kickass, load haulin'-ready, driftin' R34 GT-R El Camino?

As with the R35 GT-R wagon and this R34 GT-R wagon, this lime green example of awesomeness was created using Nissan's Stagea station wagon (thought the last generation model) as the basis. The Stagea makes for an easy swap for the GT-R front clip since it shares its chassis and drivetrain with the Skyline. Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan based, Dear Motorsports produced the GT-R El Camino by chopping the entire upper rear portion of the bodywork from the C-pillar on back. They fabricated a new bed and the rear of the cab as well as removing the rear passenger doors to create this tasty little morsel. We're starting to think that maybe we need to start chopping up some cars because this ish is off the hook!

<![CDATA[Backyard Custom Nissan Skyline Explores Boundaries Of Tasteful Restraint]]> We had to avert our eyes when posting this, as this Nissan Skyline is so incredibly beautiful we worried its majesty would ruin our opinions of all lesser cars to follow. Perfection comes in the form of extreeeeeme stickers, three-abreast hood scoops, a non-functional roof scoop, at least two sets of driving lights, a bookshelf triple-high spoiler, and not one, not two, but three sharkfin antennas. This machine quite obviously is capable of extreme performance and should absolutely be taken seriously. By our decal calculations, it's easily capable of pulling dyno runs in excess of 1500 HP and hitting top speeds around 300 MPH. This makes the green GT-R look like diced liver.

<![CDATA[Nice Price Or Crack Pipe: The $19,000 RHD Datsun Skyline C211?]]> It's Nice Price Or Crack Pipe time again, which means you have another chance to pass judgment on a car seller's possibly overoptimistic price tag! Today's car is one you don't see every day in North America, no doubt about it; the seller brought this '80 Datsun Skyline over from the UK, so it's even weirder than the occasional JDM car you might encounter. It's in pretty good shape, other than a spot of quarterpanel rust-through; we're pretty sure the L28 engine was never installed by the factory in these cars, so either the seller has the engine wrong or it's been swapped. Regardless, many common-as-dirt 280ZX parts will fit. Thanks to Justin for the tip!

<![CDATA[Godzillas, Geishas And Organized Crime: 0-60 Delves Into Motorex]]> Before there was the 2009 Nissan GT-R there was the Skyline, and if you wanted one in this country you had to go through an importer called Motorex. The problem was, the company didn't do what it was supposed to: import cars, convert them to DOT spec and then deliver them to customers. Sure, some cars got delivered, some cars even got converted, but most failed to do either. Until now, the full details of the Skyline's disastrous entry into the US market were the stuff of Internet legend. Now, thanks to 0-60, we know the facts behind the Motorex's myth, the government investigation and the repossessed cars. Check out the feature in the magazine's summer issue, available now. [0-60]

<![CDATA[Sensitive Hippies In Japan Prefer The 1972 Nissan Skyline!]]>
This is apparently one of the famous "Ken and Mary" Skyline ads, which were so popular in Japan that the car was actually known as the Kenmari. And hey, you can see why! <![CDATA[Project Car Hell: R33 Skyline GT-R or Aston Martin Lagonda?]]> Perhaps it was the terrifying rust coupled with warrior heritage, but somehow an American Hell Project managed to beat an obscure Warsaw Pact convertible in yesterday's Choose Your Eternity poll. Actually, it was a near-tie, but still a triumph for the red-white-and-blue over the, uh, blue-white-and-red. Today we're going to up the price of admission to the Gates Of Project Car Hell, though we've found a couple of high-buck cars available at (what ought to be) reasonable prices. Will you go with Late Malaise British super-luxury or Mangled Super Tokyo Hoonage? It's up to you: buy now, repent at agonizing leisure!

You want a genuine right-hand-drive, straight-from-Japan R33 Skyline GT-R, don't you? Of course you do! A 250-horse twin-turbocharged 2.6 six (which is eager to be boosted up to ridiculous power numbers using off-the-shelf components and well-known tuning tricks), all-wheel-drive, and JDM-only prestige that will leave jaws dropping in your wake. You could take your rapidly-eroding dollars and attempt to put together enough yen to get one shipped over from Japan... or you could buy this 1996 Skyline GT-R (go here if the ad disappears) right here in California! No, you're not allowed to buy it just for the RB25DETT engine (although we'd certainly approve of a Honey Bee B210 with such a powerplant)- you need to fix this car! We don't know how much the seller wants for it, but you can tell by his tone ("Don't waste my time. Serious buyers only!") that he or she means business. It's only got 10,000 kilometers on the clock, so the question is: was it hooned to death and wrecked in Japan, or was it hooned to death and wrecked over here? You'll have plenty of time to contemplate that question as you deal with layer after layer of state and federal bureaucrats, all of whom will disapprove strongly of the idea of you registering your Skyline for street use in North America, and all of whom will treat the car's sketchy lien-sale paperwork as being moderately radioactive. Oh yeah, the seller can't say whether it runs or not! Thanks to Jonee for the tip.

The last time we saw a Lagonda in this series, it stomped an Alfa Romeo Giulietta into a heap of rusty scrap metal in the poll. We thought maybe we'd save this '83 Lagonda to do battle with a Citroën, but then figured the horror of registering the Skyline, coupled with undeniable coolness, likely puts it on the same level as the Aston Martin. The best thing about this Lagonda is that it has the full-on electronic dash, which makes ordinary Lucas Electrics look downright bulletproof. And you know how much its price tag was in 1983? $150,000, which seems utter lunacy even before you convert it to the 2008 inflation-adjusted figure of $323,529. This car's auction has no reserve and is currently bid up to just $4,000; we may be looking at the ultimate in car-value depreciation here... which is bad news for the seller, but great news for you! Now, those of you who don't know Malaise Era British cars may be scoffing at the idea of this beautiful, fully-functional Aston Martin as a "project" car, but we guarantee it was a Hell Project the moment it left the assembly line (if not before then). You'll be lucky to get it up your driveway and soon-to-be sulfurous garage under its own power (four carburetors on a British DOHC smog V8- cue evil laughter). Thanks to UDMan for yet another great tip!

<![CDATA[Taking A Spin In A JDM Nissan Skyline]]> The new Nissan GT-R may be stirring up a lot of hype, but before the R35, Skyline lovers on this continent had to have their cars independently imported. The problem is, since the gray-market heyday of the '80s, the American import laws have been pretty dang strict. So, we decided to make our way up to Toronto, to check out how hoons in great white north do things. This particular operation, ONI JDM, has brought in everything from kei cars to fully-modded RX-7s, Supras, and of course Skylines. They offered to take us for a ride in their drift-spec R32 Nissan Skyline, so we bolted down the video camera and strapped ourselves in.

As you can see, the Skyline was far from stock. It started life as an R32 GTS-T, but now it's powered by a RB26 from an R33 GT-R. The ride feels brutal at first, but you quickly adjust your mindset as your expectations realize that this is a full-on stripped-out racer capable of running in the highest level of drift competition. You may think it sounds loud in the video, but that was with the silencer on, something that comes off when it hits the track.

While the shop at ONI JDM isn't particularly big, you get the sense that the business is an extension of the guys' passion. Take the guy that gave me a drive in the R32, he worked as a mechanic during the week, but was a racer and drifter on the weekends. Now, I know that many of us here at Jalopnik aren't necessarily into the tuner scene, but you've gotta admire that dual-purpose spirit of racing on Sunday then wrenching on Monday.

So, despite the free health care, we've discovered the first real reason to move to Canada: awesome JDM rides.

<![CDATA[Thief Fingered By Canadian Car Forum Still Needs One More]]> Take note: You do not mess with the motorheads at Beyond.ca unless you want 46,000 righteously angry, resourceful, and tech-savvy Canadians on the lookout for you. This is especially true if you're an easily recognizable eight-fingered stoner who's too stupid to stash one of the more visible and distinctive cars in Calgary. Before long you'll have an unflattering new nickname and a target on your back that — thanks to Google Maps — is almost literally visible from orbit.

Seems the car thief in question showed up to test-drive Shaun Ironside's car, a right-hand-drive 1991 JDM Skyline GT-R — not exactly a low-profile ride — and never came back. Now it so happens that Ironside, in addition to being a clever enough fellow to get a JDM Skyline into Calgary, was plenty observant enough to notice that the Albertan Einstein in question had only eight fingers, and resourceful enough to post his description on the Beyond.ca forums. After that, it was only a matter of time until his eventual capture, which while merely the dénouement of the epic, is still very satisfying. [Wired, YouTube]
