<![CDATA[ Chevy, GMC Reveal XFE Versions Of Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe And Yukon For 2009 ]]> GM's just revealed a whole messload of details on their newest members of the GMT-900-based full-size SUV and truck lineup — the 2009 Chevy Silverado XFE, 2009 Chevy Tahoe XFE, 2009 GMC Sierra XFE and lastly, the 2009 GMC Yukon XFE. What's XFE? It stands for Xtra Fuel Economy and the four relative fuel-sippers join the already class-leading Chevy Cobalt XFE as vehicles GMs achieved added wallet-padding using a combination of mechanical, aerodynamic and mass-reducing enhancements. The tweaks help to deliver a 5% increase in EPA-estimated highway fuel economy and more than 7% improved mileage in city driving. They achieve 15 city and 21 highway mileage ratings versus comparable non-XFE models' 14/20 ratings. The XFE designation is only available on 2WD vehicles equipped with the 5.3-liter V8 mated to a six-speed transmission. But we're told they're able to accomplish the fuel economy bump without a knock to towing ratings. The Tahoe and Yukon are unchanged, while the Silverado and Sierra increase from 6,600 pounds to 7,000 pounds due to the new, six-speed transmission and high-capacity cooling package. Still with us? Good. Hit the jump for our take.

Jalopnik Snap Judgment: This is a smart move by Chevy and GMC. If you give consumers some choice on fuel economy, more than likely they'll take it. Especially if it's at a low cost. That was the biggest problem we've got with the hybrid versions of GM's big SUVs — the added front end dollar figure destroys any possibility for recouping your monetary investment without driving the vehicle for tens of thousands of miles. But anyway, we're glad to see the General making any steps toward fuel economy gains at efficient prices — especially when mixed with the Tahoe's good looks — and without the garish stickering of the hybrid. Full press release below.

GM Full-Size Pickups And SUVs Deliver Better Fuel Economy And Same Great Capabilities With New 'XFE' Models

EPA-rated fuel economy increases to 15 city and 21 highway
Silverado and Sierra have the best aerodynamics in the class
Towing capacity on Silverado and Sierra increases to 7,000 lbs (3,175 kg)
2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid Delivers 25-Percent Improved Fuel Economy With All Of GMC's Professional Grade Capability
2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid Delivers 25-Percent Improved Fuel Economy And Delivers Chevy's Rugged Capability

DETROIT - General Motors is building on the segment-leading fuel economy of its full-size pickups and SUVs with new XFE models of the 2009 Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon. The vehicles use a combination of mechanical, aerodynamic and mass-reducing enhancements to deliver a 5-percent increase in EPA-estimated highway fuel economy and more than 7-percent improved mileage in city driving.

The aero enhancements make Silverado XFE and Sierra XFE models the most aerodynamic full-size pickups in the industry, with a "Best in Class" 0.412 coefficient of drag (cd). The pickups join the Tahoe Hybrid and Yukon Hybrid as the most aerodynamic full-size SUVs at 0.349 (cd).

The new XFE - Xtra Fuel Economy - models reflect GM's quick adaptation to an evolving market that remains a very important segment. They are available on 2WD vehicles equipped with the 5.3L V-8 and six-speed transmission. They achieve 15 city and 21 highway mileage ratings versus comparable non-XFE models' 14/20 ratings. Most importantly, the increased efficiency does not come at the expense of capability. Towing ratings for the Tahoe and Yukon are unchanged, while the Silverado and Sierra increase from 6,600 pounds (2,994 kg) to 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg) due to the new, six-speed transmission and high-capacity cooling package.

"We are pulling out all the stops to deliver a more efficient package for customers who need the capability of full-size pickups and SUVs and want the very best fuel economy," said Gary White, GM North America vice president and vehicle line executive for full-size trucks. "Our pickups and SUVs are already the fuel economy leaders of their respective segments, but our engineers knew greater efficiency was achievable. We fast-tracked the XFE models to get them into dealer showrooms as quickly as possible."

All models carry the XFE name badge and are offered in the LT trim for Silverado and LS and LT trims for Tahoe. Sierra XFE comes with SLE trim and Yukon XFE is offered with SLE and SLT trim. Most regular-production options for all models are available. Silverado XFE and Sierra XFE are offered in 2wd crew cab body styles only. Production begins this fall.

"In addition to the XFE models, GM already offers hybrid versions of the Tahoe and Yukon that achieve up to a 50-percent improvement in city fuel economy and coming in the first half of 2009 are the Silverado and Sierra Hybrids," said White. "These hybrid pickups offer up to 25 percent overall increased fuel economy and greater than 40-percent improved mileage in city driving."

XFE efficiencies

GM's more efficient full-size pickups and SUVs are powered by a 5.3L FlexFuel V-8 (LC9) engine that's built with a mass-reducing aluminum cylinder block and heads. It is rated at 320 horsepower (238 kW)* and 340 lb.-ft. of torque (461 Nm)* in Tahoe and Yukon and 315 hp/235 kW and 338 lb-ft/458 Nm in Silverado and Sierra. The engine is backed by a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission (with high-capacity cooling on Silverado and Sierra).

A rear axle equipped with a fuel-saving 3.08 ratio is also standard on all XFE models. Lightweight aluminum wheels and low rolling resistance tires (with higher tire pressure) also are included on all models.

Other unique content and features for Silverado XFE and Sierra XFE include:

Soft tonneau cover (improves aerodynamics)
Extended front lower air dam (improves aerodynamics)
Lowered suspension and revised chassis tuning (improve aerodynamics)
Aluminum lower control arms (reduce mass)
Aluminum spare wheel (reduces mass)
Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels (reduce mass)
Automatic locking rear differential
Trailering package
Low rolling resistance tires
Other unique content and features for Tahoe XFE and Yukon XFE include:

Lowered suspension and revised chassis tuning (improve aerodynamics)
Aluminum lower control arms (reduce mass)
Aluminum spare wheel (reduces mass)
Eighteen-inch aluminum wheels (reduce mass)
Automatic locking rear differential
Trailering package
Low rolling resistance tires
The new XFE models reinforce GM's commitment to full-size truck leadership, which continue to the industry's best and deliver the fuel economy, capability, quality and choice that are important to customers.

<![CDATA[ This Is Our Country, This Is Our Truck...And It Will Be For Quite Some Time ]]> General Motors is planning to extend the current product cycle on its full-size trucks and SUVs, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. New designs had been expected to come in time for the 2012 model year. However GM spokesperson Tom Wilkinson told the Journal that GM was "looking at the whole product portfolio" in an effort to bring more fuel-efficient vehicles to the U.S. market. While the change in product planning should free up much-needed R&D funds, there's little doubt the lukewarm launch of the latest Toyota Tundra and the gas prices-induced slow-motion 2009 Dodge Ram and 2009 Ford F-150 launch train-wrecks influenced top brass at the Ren Cen.

The report also mentioned cancellation of a future Hummer product and the potential shuttering of a brand, though no concrete evidence has emerged to clarify whether the Hummer product cancellation and brand closure were one in the same (Hummer) or whether Hummer might be allowed to die on the vine while another weak brand, such as Buick, was closed outright or moved off-shore. <![CDATA[ GM Offers Mind-Boggling $4,000 Incentive On Hybrid SUVs ]]> After a massive 39.5% drop in full-size truck sales last month, the General has decided to follow Ford by upping the incentives on the off-roadin' people-haulers. But not only are they dropping more dollars on the hood of the basic one-powertrain models, they're dropping the same levels of cash on the new two-mode hybrid versions of GM's GMT-900 SUV twins — the GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe. While we're not surprised at seeing up to $6,000 thrown on the hood of the non-hybrid Tahoe and Yukon, a $4,000 owner loyalty rebate on the hybrids seems a bit surprising. Isn't this a hybrid sellers' market? Full incentive breakdown after the jump.

• Chevrolet — Tahoe (nonhybrid) or Suburban: $2,000 customer cash + $4,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $6,000 total cash.

Tahoe (hybrid): $0 customer cash + $4,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $4,000 total cash.

Silverado or Avalanche: $2,000 customer cash + $3,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $5,000 total cash.

• GMC — Yukon: $2,000 customer cash + $4,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $6,000 total cash.

Yukon (hybrid): $0 customer cash + $4,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $4,000 total cash.

Sierra: $2,000 customer cash + $3,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $5,000 total cash.

• Cadillac — Escalade: $2,000 customer cash + $2,000 bonus cash + $2,000 owner loyalty bonus cash = $6,000 total cash.

<![CDATA[ 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid Revealed Ahead of Chicago Auto Show ]]> Good evening and welcome to a new two-mode hybrid pickup from the maker of many a job boss's chosen executive suite on wheels. It's the 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid, the latest among gas-electric trucks built like a hunk of lithospheric mineraloids, or so sang one gravel-larynx'd Detroiter. The Sierra follows its corporate cousin the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid into a still-sketchy market for gas-electric work trucks. GM says its hybrid pickups achieve an average mileage boost of 25% over their all-gas counterparts (with a peak of 40% more in the city). That from a combination of GM's hybrid EVT transaxle and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), hooked to a six liter V8 sporting cylinder deactivation gewgaws. We're hoping it means a trickle-down effect of less-expensive plumbers' visits and cheaper home remodeling. But something tells us it won't.

Press Release:

2009 SIERRA HYBRID DELIVERS 25-PERCENT IMPROVED FUEL ECONOMY WITH ALL OF GMC'S PROFESSIONAL GRADE CAPABILITY

CHICAGO - GMC announced the 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid, a powerful full-size pickup that achieves 40-percent greater city fuel economy and a 25-percent improvement in overall fuel economy while delivering the capability expected of a full-size truck - including a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) towing capacity.

Partnering General Motors' patented two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8, the Sierra Hybrid delivers highly efficient performance, including all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48 km/h). That allows fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer.

"The Sierra Hybrid represents GMC's commitment to engineering excellence, delivering a fully functional truck that offers a significant improvement in fuel economy," said Jim Bunnell, GMC general manager. "Sierra Hybrid will deliver fuel economy that is expected to be the best in the full-size pickup segment, exceeding the current mileage leader - the non-hybrid Sierra."

The Sierra Hybrid goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2008 and is based on the strong and capable Sierra platform that was introduced for the 2007 model year. It will be offered in the Crew Cab body style on both 2WD and 4WD models. Each model is equipped with several standard, popular features, including StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. Sierra Hybrid also offers dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags, and it is the only full-size truck with five-star side-impact ratings in federal crash tests.

Hybrid details

The Sierra Hybrid's fuel-saving performance is derived from GM's advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. GM's hybrid technology system not only enables the Sierra to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows the Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods.

As part of the vehicle's emission control system, the ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles.

With GM's two-mode hybrid system, the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.

The two-mode hybrid system provides seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package. In fact, its electric motor is less than half the size of those in single-mode hybrid systems. This technology was developed and is still used in fleets of hybrid transit buses in more than 70 North American and European cities. Scaled-down for use in passenger vehicles, the two-mode system delivers fuel savings where it is needed most - in large vehicles with high levels of capability. The two-mode system was first introduced on the 2008 Yukon Hybrid. It is a core part of GM's energy diversity efforts, which are centered on reducing dependence on petroleum, improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and minimizing the automobile's impact on the environment.

With the fuel savings of the hybrid system and Sierra's 26-gallon (98-liter) fuel tank, the Sierra Hybrid has a cruising range of more than 500 miles (800 km).

Quiet and smooth

Integration of the hybrid system on the Sierra is seamless - the battery pack is located beneath the rear seat - and perceptible only in what it lacks: noise.

"The Sierra Hybrid is exceptionally quiet," said Mark Cieslak, vehicle chief engineer. "From a passenger's perspective, the refinement of the hybrid system is quite evident throughout the driving experience, and showcases itself when the vehicle is moving under electric power."

Contributors to the quiet driving experience include:

* New exhaust system and resonator tuned for the 6.0L engine's Active Fuel Management operation
* Additional engine intake induction tuning for reduced interior noise and pleasing sound quality
* Low-rolling resistance, "quiet-tuned" P265/65R18 tires for reduced road noise
* Electrically driven 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the standard, tri-zone HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off
* Electrically driven 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems
* Energy Storage System (ESS) cooling system internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants

Along with quietness, the Sierra Hybrid also delivers exceptional driving smoothness, thanks to specifically tuned shocks for its Z85 suspension and a new hydraulic body mount. Located on the passenger side of the chassis, the hydraulic mount provides a dramatic improvement in highway driving smoothness, particularly on rough or choppy road surfaces.

"The hydraulic mount makes a dramatic improvement in ride quality," said Cieslak.

Additional details specific to the Sierra Hybrid include aerodynamic aids. A slightly deeper front air dam and a tonneau cover for the bed reduce air drag, fostering maximum efficiency.

Trailering performance

In addition to increased fuel economy, the Sierra Hybrid's electrically variable transmission also provides tremendous trailering capability, enhancing driving smoothness and quality when towing. Electric drive is enabled up to approximately 30 mph (48 km/h), even when towing, allowing fuel savings when the truck is towing a trailer.

"Along with being very smooth, the EVT always provides abundant torque at all rpm levels for easy towing," said Cieslak. "It is particularly helpful on grades, as the EVT's greater ratio spread allows the engine to hold optimal rpm for smooth, steady performance, with no hunting between higher and lower gears."

The EVT incorporates grade braking and tap up/tap down shift control. It also benefits towing on curves or lower-speed back roads, as exceptionally smooth gear transitions eliminate the "shift shock" torque disruption that can occur during abrupt shifts, such as when slowing or braking.

In addition to the eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on the Sierra Hybrid's Energy Storage System, GM's Five-Year/100,000 Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty continues to make GM a better choice for customers. GM's coverage focuses on the complete ownership experience and includes other provisions that competitors do not offer, including transferability to the next owner, more complete coverage of parts, and coverage for new and certified used vehicles. In addition, GM offers complementary programs such as courtesy transportation and roadside assistance.

If you'll remember, Gritzinger was the motor-man who broke open the seal on the new-for-2007 GMT-900 twin pickups, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. Gritz dropped the AutoWeek piece well before the media drives were even completed by dropping into a local Chevy dealership where he snagged 20 minutes in a Silverado for a test drive. And with today's broke-as-a-joke embargo break of the drive review of the Buick Enclave it looks like Floraday's cribbing notes from the other member of the dastardly duo. Phil claims to have gotten his hands on Tiger's Buick's Enclave for a quick little jaunt courtesy of a "local Buick dealer." While Lutz recently explained to Automotive News why the reborn Goat went so soon to slaughter, we might want to look back at another Bob Lutz project that combined great-for-its day power with a rear-drive IRS package: The Merkur XR4Ti. Pulled from a 1998 interview, Lutz explains what killed Ford's 3-Series rival in the American market after the jump.

"I'll tell you where the mistake was made, in my judgment. We all wanted it as a Ford of Europe export program, as opposed to an NAO import program, and many of us wanted the car to be put through the import networks and just almost totally disassociated from Ford. We wanted a separate [advertising] agency that would take a completely different approach and address itself to import owners who at that time were a completely different breed. The last thing in the world we wanted was an agency like [Young & Rubicam] coming up with headlines like "Bavarian Scream," which, when the car wasn't even from Bavaria, you know, I mean, it was so absurd."

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra, Part 2 ]]>
Exterior Design:
Silverado: ****
I've always though an aggressive centerline on the front of a vehicle creates a unified central point that draws the eye forward. The Silverado's got that. One star deducted for the odd looking rear-wheel flares.

Sierra: ***
Two stars because the Sierra looks like a truck, though the sparse grille — an emotionless void — is unfulfilling. It gets the third star because the Denali package's black mesh grille adds a hint of sophistication that sets the more upscale Sierra apart from the Silverado.

Interior Design: ****
A substantial improvement over the last iteration. Despite the continued use of cheap plastics, there's a level of ruggedness that's been missing from pickup trucks of any manufacturer — save a luxe model like Lincoln's Mark LT. But the most striking change from the previous model is how much more quiet the new trucks are (via a new spray-on foam sound-deadener and 19-mm-thick insulation under the carpet). One point deducted because, although the mouse-hair roof liner's gone, it has a tactile equivalent to nothing I know of — and that's no good thing.

Acceleration: ***
When unladen and fitted with a V8 engine, particularly the big 6.0 liter V8 VortecMax the trucks have serious drive-your-ass-into-your-seat acceleration. Still, they seemed to lack the confidence-inspiring pull to drag 10,500 lbs. around town on a regular basis. Such is the job of the heavy duty versions.

Braking: ***
Even when stressed by a loaded bed and full trailer, the stoppers felt substantive at first, but soon tuckered out, despite the four-wheel discs. In Phoenix, an on-site test against competitors produced the expected impressive results, though I did see very little yaw during those at-the-limit stops.

Ride: *****
Company reps are quick to point to the fully boxed frame that's "62% stiffer in beaming and 230 torsionally stiffer." Whatever the reason, after driving 45 minutes down the highways and byways of Phoenix in the old model, my ass was in pain. An hour into driving one of the new GMC Sierras along the same highway later in the day, and I had not a single complaint about jarring and jolting from road bumps — the ride's much more refined.

Handling: ****
The new pickup should only have three stars even with the upgrade made by the new rack-and-pinion steering system and the Hotchkiss-type live axle rear suspension. It's just that the previous model of the truck was just that bad. Still, they've included StabiliTrak electro-nanny as a standard feature, and everyone who's ever driven a fully loaded truck in a quick-brake situation knows, it's so much better to not get into one — they get an extra star for that.

Gearbox: ***
Nothing special with the standard five-speed, we would have liked to have seen a truck with the new six-speed, as the General tells us they'll be almost 10% more fuel efficient with them. Unfortunately, in the rush to get the trucks to market, they seemed to have been unable to get the six-speed's production ramped up as well. They claim they'll be standard issue starting mid-year.

Audio/Video: ***
Come on, man — it's a truck — what do you expect? Still, with the level of quiet in that cab, even the standard radio system sounded above and beyond anything we'd heard previously in a pickup. The best part of the system is that all radios now come standard with an aux-in jack. Also, the rear-seat entertainment's top-notch — we even played Playstation in the back of a Sierra going around the Phoenix "performance course" at the GM test facility — all of which makes up for the difficult-to-follow touch-screen nav system. Still, you get the hang of it after a few miles.

Toys: ****
Not much to speak of on the inside other than the rear bench features a really cool one-handed fold-flat option that gives full access to the floor of the rear area. It's the truck bed where the real cool kit can be found. It features a three-rail cargo management system running the length of the box sides and the forward box wall. You can order all sorts of accessories including tool boxes, bike mounts and sliding bed dividers that when coupled with moveable tie-downs, allowing customizable storage options.

Trunk: ***
The truck bed comes in three bears sizes, 5-foot 8-inch, 6-foot 6-inch and 8-foot lengths depending on whether you're getting a regular, extended or crew cab size. Nothing special.

Value: ***
Coming in at a starting price of $23,605 for the standard cab, they're not cheap. But for the money you get extras like like Stabilitrak, and ... ok, yeah, who am I kidding, they're pricey.

Overall: ****
These are solid pickups that go above and beyond the General's previous generation of trucks. Even with the high price, they're at the top of the light-truck hierarchy.

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Chevrolet Silverado / GMC Sierra, Part 1 ]]>
It's a turbulent time for full-sized pickups. For the past three decades, the Ford F-series has been the segment's undisputed king of the hill. But a recent slowdown in demand and production means its crown may be up for grabs. Toyota's gearing up to launch the newest Tundra, the product of a titanic undertaking to match the domestics on their own turf. And then there's General Motors, which is launching its latest full-size light-duty pickups — the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra — this month, and they no longer want to merely be a part of that action, they want to dominate it. And damned if they aren't ready for a brawl.

The 2007 Silverado and Sierra, twin toolboxes in GM's lineup, are entirely different vehicles than their predecessors were. GM's spared little expense reworking its light-truck platform and the sheetmetal that shrouds it. Payload of the Silverado/Sierra is up with a base carry of 1,564 lbs, and topping out at 2,160 lbs. Towing capacity is up too, starting at 4,300 lbs and topping out at 10,500 lbs. Naturally, as GM execs are thrilled to point out, such numbers give the new pickups claim to the nominal title of best-in-class, as do EPA ratings (of the 4.3L V-6, the least powerful engine configuration) of 17 mpg city 21 mpg highway, numbers we actually saw on a recent test drive in the Arizona desert.

The cold endorsement of mathematics notwithstanding, these new pickups are out to avenge GM's honor on the streets as well as on the job site. Confronting the dichotomy between stump-pulling utility and carlike refinement, GM offers an option book full of engine and suspension configurations, from that fuel-sipping 4.3L six-valve all the way up the chain to the 367 hp "Vortex Max" 6.0-liter V8, coupled with a heavy-duty four-speed transmission, 4.10 rear-axle gears and locking diff. In that combination, the Silverado rivals the long-time leader in horses, the 5.7-liter, 335 hp HEMI in Dodge's Laramie Edition Ram. As in previous years, GM also offers the off-road-capable Z71 package, which adds off-road shocks, skid plates, an automatic locking rear diff and a high-capacity air cleaner. And thanks to a new rack-and-pinion setup the steering feel's smoother and more precise — unlike it's older sibling, which made you feel like you were moving a land barge.

Chevy-Silverado-GMC-Sierra-Gallery.jpg

Inside, Chevrolet aimed to correct a multitude of sins from Silverados past, mainly, the acres of cheap n' flimsy materials marring earlier models. There's still plenty of cheap n' flimsy to go around, but new fabrics and plastics and a deft designer's touch make the cab feel less institutional and more familial. The elegant binnacle and console setup straddles the line between minimalism (e.g., Dodge Ram), and techie-modern (e.g., Nissan Titan), while smart touches like storage units and folding rear seats that give way to a flat loading floor (one of the coolest features on the truck) add up to what could be the best interior in its class. The more luxe GMC Sierra shares a dash and molded center console with the more lavishly appointed Yukon SUV. It's the most notable differentiation between the Silverado and Sierra, two cousins that were once as close as twins.

The verdict? GM's made a costly run at Ford's 27-year dominance, which many said was unassailable. For its trouble, the Silverado's ahead in the numbers game. But more important, the close attention paid to these high-margin vehicles shows up in just about every aspect. They're far more civilized and better capable for backbreaking work than the trucks they replace. The next move may be Toyota's — but for the time being, the General's atop the hill, wearing the crown.

<![CDATA[ Toyota And Nissan To Delay Heavy Duty Trucks; GM, Ford And Dodge Can Hardly Contain Selves ]]>
Gee, and we always thought that the "HD" meant "high definition." Man, how wrong were we? It actually stands for "Heavy Duty" or "Professional Grade" or whatever each company calls their big ol' trucks for construction sites and other mud n' dirt needs. Heavy Duty's different than most other pickups offered by automakers, which are more usually called "lame" (or poseurs — we're trying to bone up on our French for obvious reasons). Anyway — Toyota's much long heralded arrival to the HD scene's apparently gonna take a little bit longer than originally thought — as Automotive News is reporting they'll be delayed, and won't see an official release until...well...it's been indefinitely halted. Nissan on the other hand is planning a heavy-duty pickup, but they won't make it until 2009 at the earliest. That's good news for Chevy, Ford, Dodge, GMC and any other American brand we may have missed who've seen profits from a segment growing 12% last year — despite softening sales in the lighter end of their pickup lineups.

<![CDATA[ GM Hates Bob Seger: Chevy To Sell New Trucks By Getting A Bit Mellencampy ]]> John-Mellencamp.jpg
Despite much love being showed to the old "Like A Rock" ad campaign for Chevy trucks in our polls, GM and Chevy apparently want nothing to do with Bob Seger's crooning voice and a Rock-like image for its new GMT-900 Chevy Silverado trucks. Instead, according to Automotive News, the folks at Chevy would rather hurt so good to get a leg up on the competition by throwing down some R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., trading in one small town middle-aged fat crooner for another, going with the just for men gel using John Mellencamp to sing a little diddy for truck buyers. Although if the reportedly $400 million ad campaign doesn't give the General...

...the hand to hold on to they need, and sales start to come crumblin' down, there'll be no thank you for Mellencamp. Although he may have to cut the whole "Cougar" part from his name — we think Ford/Mercury may still have the trademark on it. Oh, and GMC's continuing with the "professional grade" theme — no song and dance for the Sierra's necessary.

<![CDATA[ Like a Nuttendiesel: Bob Seger Prefers Ze Porsche ]]> Bob_Seger_Keyboard.jpg
We were all excited a few weeks ago after the results of our poll asking folks if they wanted Chevy to bring on the return of the old Bob Seger "Like A Rock" song / slogan as they herald in the new GMT-900 based pickup trucks. We found a whopping 49% of you answered "Yes! Dude, that song defines Chevy trucks." — with the response of "It's a fucking truck. Just tell me how much it hauls and shut the hell up." at 37.6% the only close contender. We were all set to begin our holy war against the RenCen to ensure they knew what the people wanted — because over the years it's been obvious that that's not something which happens readily. But then, we were stopped cold by an article submitted by our friend Cole Coonce that claims Seger's personal garage now holds a Porsche Boxster, a Nissan pickup and a couple of Ford Mustangs. Although he does own an "11-year-old Chevy van for business purposes, there's not a Chevy pickup among his four-wheeled possessions. That being the case, is there even a way to reconcile these seemingly irreconcilables between Seger and Chevy to make a "Like A Rock" slogan return a possibility? We've no idea — but we're willing to try — as long as y'all are with us. So, like we always do — let's do it democratic-like:

<![CDATA[ You're With Me, Sierra? GMC And ESPN Huddle Up On New Pickup Advertising ]]> Chris_Berman-Cheerleaders.jpg
The General just released the media marketing strategy for the GMC Sierra, and it's filled with all sorts of marketing buzz terminology about how it's designed to "leverage a non-traditional marketing platform designed to reach today's savvy consumer beyond the traditional thirty second television advertisement." So in english it appears GM means that it'll be using a mix of not-so-much interactive internet ads — paired with the acknowledged Hail Mary of advertising — "football-themed TV promotional spots...co-branded with ESPN." Because apparently, if the ad is "football-themed" it's "non-traditional." More importantly, if the ads are "co-branded with ESPN" — then they're so non-traditional that they're actually become a "non-traditional marketing platform." All the General needs to do now is toss Chris Berman and some scantily-clad cheerleaders (sorostitutes work in a pinch) up onto the "platform" and we've got everything kids in the 18-35 demo need to wet their pants. While we go and vomit a little, check out the full press release after the jump.

GMC Announces its Largest Advertising and Marketing Campaign Yet at NFL Kick-off 2006

Non-traditional marketing strategy designed to keep pace with shifts in consumer preferences includes heavy focus on new and emerging digital technologies and online media and promotions.

DETROIT- GMC announced today elements of its largest advertising and marketing campaign yet to launch its all-new 2007 Sierra pickup, leveraging a non-traditional marketing platform designed to reach today's savvy consumer beyond the traditional thirty second television advertisement.

The strategy runs throughout the fourth quarter and is designed to reach the millions of football fans who watch Monday Night Football, and tap into the passion NFL fans have for the game on a regular basis.

At the NFL Kick-Off celebration activities in Miami this week, GMC will announce details to its new "Keys to Victory" promotion, a national initiative with ESPN's Monday Night Football. The multi-faceted online promotion gives consumers a chance to win the all-new 2007 Sierra truck, the official truck of the NFL, each week for 16 weeks.

The "Keys to Victory" promotion uses Oddcast Technology to regularly engage the passionate NFL fan at an entirely new level. Oddcast technology makes the website look like it is live, as if Joe is having a real-time interaction with the consumer.

"Keys to Victory, GMC's largest promotion to date, is the pivotal promotional element of GMC's sports strategy to reach the millions of football fans who attend or watch games on television every week," said Steve Rosenblum, GMC marketing director. "A promotion of this magnitude will not only harness the power we already have with football fans throughout the country, but will help take that excitement to the next level."

"In celebration of ESPN's Monday Night Football, we've collaborated with one of the NFL's largest sponsors to create the biggest promotion of the year," said Fred Bucher, vice president TV online marketing, ESPN. "GMC's "Keys to Victory" will keep viewers tuning in to ESPN each week for their chance to win the official truck of the NFL."

The 16-week promotion begins at the NFL Kick-off Experience in Miami on Sept. 5, with an eye-catching parade of 32 vehicles wrapped in official NFL team colors and logos. Almost 30 football legends, including "Keys to Victory" host Joe Theismann, will caravan down Ocean Drive .

"I'm excited to play host of ESPN's Monday Night Football and GMC's 'Keys to Victory'," said NFL legend Joe Theismann. "This innovative promotion not only allows me to interact with my fans and share insights on Monday Night Football match-ups, but also gives football fans everywhere a chance to win the greatest truck on the market."

16 Weeks. 16 Trucks. 16 Chances to Win.

Beginning Sept. 1, NFL fans will log on to keystovictory.com for three chances to win the all-new 2007 GMC Sierra. Viewers will have the opportunity to win by:

1. Voting online for who they think will win each week's Monday Night Football match-up (fans can gain insight by viewing a video analysis by Theismann)
2. Interacting with Theismann by answering football trivia questions
3. Interacting with the all-new Sierra vehicle via virtual tour

In addition, The Keys to Victory on-air poll will feature ESPN analysts discussing the GMC Keys to Victory and directing viewers to the web site to vote on which key to victory will be the most dominant in the game. The voter's poll will be revealed on Sports Center at the conclusion of the game.

Football-Themed Advertising

The promotion is a piece of GMC's advertising campaign launching the all-new 2007 GMC Sierra. "Keys to Victory" will be supported through multiple media channels including:

* Football- themed TV promotional spots that focus on "Keys to Victory" and the all-new 2007 Sierra.
* USA Today ads - print ads will run on Friday and Monday each week to drive traffic to the "Keys to Victory" web site through the weekly match-up - consumers will be able to make their vote for the game winner for a chance to win a 2007 Sierra.
* ESPN magazine presence - contextual ads will run in the magazine every two weeks
* Online Advertising - Fantasy Football and ESPN promotional and football-themed executions.

In addition, GMC will have exposure in the following:

* Monday Night Football Opening on ESPN - GMC and the Sierra will be featured numerous times during Monday Night Football Opening kicking off each Monday night game.
* Co-Branded ESPN spot - GMC will be featured in a co-branded spot produced by ESPN to promote Monday Night Football.

GMC's relationship with the NFL began in 2004 when it became the first advertiser to have specific products featured in the Monday Night Football opening. In 2005, GMC aired the first 90-second football-themed spot when it was named, "the official vehicle of the NFL."

Last week when the General introduced its newly tricked-out GMT-900 trucks, the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra, it got us to thinking — whatever happened to the old "Like A Rock" ad slogan? One of us (take a guess) was all over that made-in-Detroit Bob Seger crooner shit, and despite the suckiness of the song — that same one of us thought it was a pretty cool slogan for a truck — and it fits right in with that whole "American Revolution" thing Chevy's slingin' right now. Plus, Seger's got a new album out soon — so there's all sorts of cross-promotional crap to work with. And they already can say they're first in class when it comes to star-power cause Seger can whoop Taylor Hicks ass any day of the week.

On the other hand, one of us felt that the slogan sucked and the last of us was an elitist from NY and was totally ambivalent. So we'd like you guys to think about it and answer us this question:

<![CDATA[ Being Greenish: Silverado, Sierra to be GM's First Hybrid Trucks; Fall 2007 Launch ]]>

Edmunds Inside Line got the inside dirt on GM's new full-sized hybrid trucks. Word is, the first among them — versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups — will debut in Fall 2007, which means GM could possibly beat Toyota (the big T's reportedly doing a feasibility study on a hybrid version of its new '07 Tundra) to a significant hybrid product launch. At last. [UPDATE: In the headline, we of course meant first full-hybrid trucks. The current Silverado hybrid is most definitely a hybrid - and has a plug for Skill Saws and whatnot. Thanks to Mike for reminding us.]

The trucks will be fitted with the "dual-mode" hybrid system The General developed with co-bedfellows BMW and DaimlerChrysler. Sources told IL the V8-powered trucks will get 25 percent better fuel economy over traditional models and have 365 hp over 350 ft.-lbs of torque. No word on whether the pickups' battery packs will be able to run a Skil Saw at job sites, but that would be freaking cool.

Like it's brother GMT-900 truck, the Chevy Silverado, the 2007 GMC Sierra was re-designed from the bottom up — and also like its badge-engineered brother — it shows. The cool thing about the GMC model is the addition of a "Denali edition." And by "cool", we really mean it's probably not cool. Rather, it kinda feels like a shameless extension of the "Denali edition" of the Yukon and Envoy — except...it does look different. But more on that shortly. Feast your GMC-loving eyes on the picture gallery of 2007 GMC Sierra SLT Extended Cab below and hit the jump for the press release.

ALL-NEW 2007 GMC SIERRA DRAWS ON HERITAGE OF MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF TRUCK-BUILDING EXPERIENCE

DETROIT - GMC's more than 100-year heritage of building professional grade vehicles marks a new era with the introduction of the 2007 Sierra lineup. The trucks are all-new and elevate industry standards with segment-best V-8 power and fuel efficiency, along with agile ride and handling and the quietest interior of any full-size truck.

The '07 Sierra models - including the unique Sierra Denali - deliver the light-duty segment's highest-rated towing capacity (10,500 pounds/4,763 kg) and offer a maximum payload capacity of 2,160 pounds (980 kg).

"The all-new 2007 Sierra has a confident, pure presence that represents GMC's professional grade philosophy," said John Larson, general manager of Buick-Pontiac-GMC.

Sierra light-duty models are available in the fourth quarter of 2006. Sierra Denali and heavy-duty models are available in the first quarter of 2007. Sierra is available in several trim packages, including work truck, SLE (SLE1 and SLE2 models) and SLT, along with 2WD and 4WD configurations. Three cab styles - regular, extended and crew cab - and three cargo box lengths - 5 foot 8 inches, 6 foot 6 inches and 8 foot - are offered.

"The '07 Sierra lineup's range of models and configurations is more distinctive, with packages tailored to all lifestyles and uses," Larson said. "All trucks share an intrinsic quality of refinement, from the elemental work truck model to the luxury-inspired Sierra Denali."

Sierra Denali is a distinct model, with differentiated, exclusive features that elevate its performance and design, such as an exclusive 6.2L all-aluminum V-8 engine with variable valve timing and a new six-speed automatic transmission.

Distinctive design
The 2007 GMC Sierra is designed with a strong and refined appearance befitting the brand's professional grade philosophy, including muscular character lines and rounded edges. The front end appearance, front fenders, hood and rear fenders are unique. A "center-focused" hood, which flows outward to meet the front fenders and stamped-in rear wheel flares enhance the muscular look.

All models except the fleet-oriented work truck model come with a distinctive chrome hood molding. Sierra's grille is complemented by large, jeweled-appearance headlamps. Sierra SLT models come with a chrome front bumper, with a body-color top cap. All door handles feature large, grab-style designs that are easy to open with gloves.

A family of 17- and 20-inch wheels and tires is available throughout the Sierra range, with Sierra Denali offering unique wheels (see Sierra Denali details section).

Sierra is available in nine exterior colors, including: Deep Blue Metallic, Medium Brown Metallic, Steel Gray Metallic, Onyx Black, Stealth Gray Metallic, Summit White, Silver Birch Metallic, Fire Red and Sport Red Metallic.

Spacious, refined interior
Sierra models are more spacious with increased storage space, as well as flush surfaces, tight gaps and tolerances, and improved comfort and convenience. Sierra work truck and SLE come with a "pure pickup" interior that features larger controls and door handles that are easier to use with gloves. SLE1 models on regular, extended and crew cabs are equipped with a new 40/20/40-split front bench seat, which features a fold-down armrest and storage compartment.

A large-capacity, "double" glove box is integrated into the instrument panel on work truck and SLE models. Cloth seats are standard on work truck and SLE models; leather seating is available on SLE models. SLE2-equipped vehicles add a six-way power-adjustable driver seat. Work truck models are offered in a Dark Titanium interior color; SLE models are offered in an all-Ebony interior color, or Dark Titanium/Light Titanium and Ebony/Light Cashmere combinations.

SLT models feature a luxury-inspired interior with a unique instrument panel, door panels, larger-capacity center console and other distinct trim. Heated, 12-way power-adjustable (driver seat) leather seating is standard, along with a six-disc CD/MP3-capable audio system, Bose speaker system and heated windshield washer system. Crew cab SLT models add rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers and a rear-seat audio system. SLT interior color schemes include all-Ebony, Dark Titanium/Light Titanium and Dark Cashmere/Light Cashmere combinations.

Rear seat room is improved, along with increased comfort. Standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models is a new, stadium-style rear seat with a 60/40-split design. It can be easily folded up to provide an uninterrupted load floor. Or, either section of the split seat can be stowed independently, allowing room for both cargo and a rear-seat passenger. Entry to the rear seat/storage area of extended cab models is eased with new rear access doors that open 170 degrees.

A variety of useful convenience items are available on SLE and SLT models, including a touch-screen navigation radio, power-operated sunroof, power-sliding rear window and XM Satellite Radio. A rear seat entertainment system is available on crew cab SLE2 and SLT models, and all models are available with a variety of radio systems.

Responsive driving experience
The 2007 GMC Sierra delivers enhanced stability and driving confidence from a new, boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspensions and rack-and-pinion steering. Five suspension systems area available, each tailored to suit specific driving requirements. They include:
Z83 - Delivers a solid, smooth ride with monotube front shocks and twin-tube rear shocks.
Z85 - Designed for enhanced handling and trailer towing, with monotube front and rear shocks.
Z71 - Delivers enhanced off-road capability; features specific monotube front and rear shocks.
Z60 - Designed for maximum street performance and offered with 20-inch wheels.
NHT - Maximum capacity trailering.

GM's sophisticated StabiliTrak electronic stability control system helps mitigate the occurrence of rollover events; it is standard on crew cab models and available on extended cab models - and is a segment exclusive. Partnered with an improved, high capacity brake system and four-channel, four-sensor electronic brake controls, the system provides more precise, controlled ABS stops, as well as enhanced traction/yaw stability.

Sierra models are powered by an efficient lineup of engines, led by the segment's highest-rated V-8 engines. Advanced technology, such as Active Fuel Management (AFM) and variable valve timing (VVT), helps Sierra deliver the segment's best fuel economy. A FlexFuel engine is available - and partnered with fuel-saving AFM - giving customers the choice of powering their truck with E85 ethanol, gasoline or a combination of both fuels. Light-duty engine offerings include:
4.3L V-6 (LU3), rated at 195 hp (145 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 Nm). It is standard on work truck regular cab and 2WD extended cab models.

6.0L V-8 (L76), with aluminum block, variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, rated at 367 hp (274 kW) and 375 lb.-ft. of torque (508 Nm)*. It is available on SLE and SLT extended and crew cab models as part of the enhanced trailering package.
6.2L V-8 (L92), with aluminum block and variable valve timing, rated at 400 hp (298 kW) and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm)**. This engine is exclusive to Sierra Denali.

The engines are backed by proven Hydra-Matic electronically controlled automatic transmissions, including the proven 4L60 four-speed automatic, high capacity 4L70 four-speed automatic and a new 6L80 six-speed with the Sierra Denali's 6.2L engine. The six-speed automatic has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio - including two overdrive gears - that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. Also, the 6L80 has a "tap up/tap down" capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

Safety and security
Sierra delivers a perimeter of safety protection through a stronger frame and body structure as well as industry- and segment-leading technology. It also is designed to provide increased compatibility with other vehicles. New features include segment-first StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, roof-mounted head curtain side air bags, which are integrated into strengthened chassis and body structures to provide excellent passenger protection, and segment-first safety belt pretensioners that activate during a rear-end crash. The head curtain side air bags are available on Sierra SLE and SLT models.

Driver control dynamics are enhanced by wider front and rear tracks, as well as more responsive suspensions - including a new coil-over-shock front suspension design and rack-and-pinion steering. Additional safety features are offered on Sierra, including factory-installed remote vehicle starting (segment exclusive), Autotrac active transfer case to help keep the vehicle sure-footed in slippery driving situations, Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist and a revised, easier-to-use tire pressure monitoring system.

All retail models come standard with the OnStar Generation 7 system, including a one-year subscription to the Safe & Sound plan. The OnStar service includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to emergency services to potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar advisor, who will check on the occupants or summon emergency help if necessary. OnStar also can assist authorities in locating a vehicle if it is reported stolen and provides remote door-unlocking service (when the vehicle is equipped with power door locks).

Sierra Denali details
The unique Sierra Denali is a truck like no other, with enhanced features and craftsmanship that distinguish it from other models - as well as offerings from other manufacturers. The '07 model remains instantly identifiable, with its iconic, Denali-specific signature chrome grille. Additional chrome trim and body-color bumpers further distinguish it. Denali models also feature a unique center console, enhanced interior bright work and detailed, highly finished embossed sill plates that greet passengers when they open any of the Sierra Denali's doors. The unique center console has wood grain trim that conceals the lid and cupholder pockets, creating a more finished and refined appearance. In addition to a full complement of standard amenities, Sierra Denali offers exclusive features such as an available heated steering wheel. Interior colors include all-Ebony and an exclusive Cocoa/Light Cashmere combination.

Standard features include roof-mounted side curtain air bags, power-adjustable pedals, electrochromic (auto-dimming) inside mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers, remote starting system, EZ Lift Tailgate and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist. From an entertainment standpoint, Sierra Denali comes standard with an AM/FM MP3-capable radio with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, Bose premium speaker sound system, rear-seat audio and XM Satellite Radio.

*SAE certified. A new voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee was approved March 31, 2005. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. GM was the first auto manufacturer to begin using the procedure and expects to use it for all newly rated engines in the future.

** Pending certification.

<![CDATA[ Maximum Bob Lutz: Born From Sunglasses ]]>

Before we even get into the pictures and videos of trucks from GM's event announcing the release of the new GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado pickups, we need to take a moment and marvel at the man, the myth, the legend...Bob Lutz. Originally we thought Lutz, like Saab, was born from jets. We were wrong. In truth, we feel like the GM product chief was born from sunglasses...based upon the fact he was wearing his proto-aviators all day today — indoors and out. And you know what they say — when you're cool, the sun's always shining. Right? Let's find out what you think.

<![CDATA[ EXCLUSIVE TRANSFORMER PICS: Ironhide Spotted On Wilshire Blvd! ]]>
It must be Transformers Friday round these parts, what with the pics we received today that may or may not be earlier Constructicons ready to form Devastator and now these two pics received from our enterprising friend Hue out in LA. But what could it be? That's definitely an Autobot insignia...hmm. Ahh, we've got it now. Take a good look at the rear-end of a certain used-to-be red Nissan van by the name of Ironhide. Full text of the e-mail from Hue and a second shot after the jump. Also remember to keep up with all of our Transformers coverage through our mini-site and the corresponding RSS feed.

Ironhide_02_400.jpg

Very high probability that this is Ironhide in the transformers film. Sadly no shots of the front, but i did get a good look at it. It appeared to be a heavily modified Sierra 3500 GMC. The front was more altered than the back. Vents on each side of a very angular hood and large, square headlamps made up the front of the vehicle. The rear has large fender and smoke stacks. After researching the transformers movie site, this could be ironhide. He use to be a red, nissan van back in the day. Still pretty cool. The autobot logo only appeared on the tailgate and was embossed into the metal.

I shot this on Le Brea and Wilshire Blvd in LA

Our fanboy nipples are hardened from excitement — and it's all your fault, Hue.

Update: It turns out that it's not a GMC Sierra — it's a GMC Top Kick C4500 4WD Crew Cab and we've got more details on the customizations made to make the hauler Ironhide here.

<![CDATA[ Camper Van Saabthoven: Take the Skinheads Bowling in Style in a Toppola! ]]>

Not everyone in the world was fortunate enough to grow up with clapped-out F-150s a dime a dozen, ripe for carrying out one's part-time recreational-vehicle fantasies. Which is why the Swedes developed the Toppola. A camper shell designed to mate to the rear of a Saab or Sierra with the rear hatch removed, the thing offered a 2 meter standing height and serious econo utility. We applaud you, Toppola types, for bringing the joy of roughing it comfortably to the mostly F-150, Silverado and Ram-free people of Europe. [Thanks to Big Dave for the tip.]

The GMT 900-Foot Jesus juggernaut just keeps rollin' on in like a Gulf Coast hurricane. What's it got? Well, for starters, a bling-ass grille, a GQ Smoove interior and a 6.2L engine. What's it got that you actually need in a pickup? A bed and a motor. Priddy's kids caught one undergoing tests, and you can click right on over to PickupTruck.com, sit right down, and baby let your mind roll on.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: 2007 GMC Sierra ]]> gmc_sierra_pickup.jpg

Strangely, unlike its Tahoe SUV brother, the new, GMT900-platform GMC Sierra pickup doesn't seem to have that familiar GMC Sloping Grille(TM), according to some new spy shots published on Edmunds Inside Line. A hybrid model will follow the late-2006 launch of the Sierra. GM's betting the farm on these new full-sized trucks, and the future of GMC is at stake, so we'd better pay some damn attention to them.
