    got a very similar one here in Milwaukee, which has been very much appreciated the last few days walking the dog or scraping ice off the cars.


    BTW - good article on nytimes.com on the differences between US and Euro safety standards, and why we should match theirs or at least ignore the differences in order to bring over some of the great cars they get but we don't

    Fur-lined "ear-flap" hats are standard equipment in New Hampshire (I own four of them). Not only do they keep my ears warm, but they provide colleagues with a good dose of comic relief during the bleak winter months.

    @NovaloadMissesPolar: You need layers in the 40-degree-temp-spread-in-same-day... Bay Area, just like Seattle, so I have many flannel shirts. It was nice when "grunge" fashion (briefly) made me look hip and trendy.

    @sos10: I'm not sure who makes these frames, but I got them because they look like something Szilard would have worn in 1938. That's how I put it at the optometrist's office, too: "Give me late-30s atomic scientist glasses!"

    @Murilee Martin: Not Zappa related, but when I was in the service, one of my coworkers would sing christmas carols. All the time. Year round.


    We'd be out on the flightline somewhere in the middle east, 115 degrees, and he'd be singing "Dashing through the snooow, in a one horse open sleeeigh".


    To this day I want to kick carolers in the throat.

    @Murilee Martin: Actually the Econoline looked much cleaner and maybe even more private than most of the junkyard porta-potties I've seen. Probably smelled better too, it only had one pile of crap in it.

    Saw a guy flying up I85 this past weekend in NC with, among other things, a washing machine in the trunk. It was a late-90's town car, so the thing actually fit, though the lid was up, naturally.


    The suspension wasn't even sagging. Much.
