<![CDATA[Bugatti "Bordeaux" Sedan Gets Eight Tailpipes?]]> This photoshoped image purports to reveal a Bugatti four-door with eight tailpipes. Eight! Rumor has it this shooting brake-style supercar will be called the Bugatti Bordeaux and use the same 8.0-liter W16 as the Veyron.

Based on the blurry, dark teaser image we brought you on Monday, some enterprising artist has taken the liberty of photoshopping on a complete rear and what he or she thinks the tailpipes will look like.

That quad-turbo engine will presumably be equipped with the same 1,001 HP and 920 Lb-Ft of torque rating, easily making this the fastest four-door ever.

The original image was allegedly part of an invitation to a super exclusive reveal party at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, where we expect to see the Bordeaux, or a four-door like it, fully revealed. [via PistonHeads]

<![CDATA[Cayman Shooting Brake Confirmed In Forza 3 Screen Shot?]]> This screen cap, reportedly from the yet-unreleased Forza 3 for Xbox 360, is adding credibility to the Porsche Cayman shooting brake rumor. Has Forza got the digital data on a shocking new Porsche offering?

The screen capture, posted on Xbox-scene, comes from "a friend in Prague," which could mean anything from the latest element in an elaborate hoax to a legitimate, but unnamed source. What the screen capture shows is basically the exact same car we saw in Wednesday's surprising amateur spy shots.

We're doing a little more digging, but if this turns out to be true, a Porsche Cayman shooting brake will be quite a shocking new product from the Germans. Our mouths are agape at the prospect of a mid-engined, two door station wagon from Porsche. This might be the greatest thing ever. Click here for the full-sized image. [Xbox-scene Forums]

<![CDATA[Porsche Cayman Mule Spotted With Shooting Brake Shape]]> If you share our love of shooting brakes, hold onto your hats as amateur shooters have captured what looks to be a Porsche Cayman shooting brake mule. At least that's what we hope it is.

A snippet of footage taken of the car was sent in to TopGear.com where they've posted it and, like us, are salivating over the prospect. It shows a surprisingly developed mule vehicle in all black and one of the most surprisingly awesome shapes we've seen in some time. The TG boys are speculating it may just be big cover offering better access to a rumored turbo mill under development. This would be great for Porsche fans, but we're praying there's more. Porsche, just when we thought you couldn't do anything worse than the Panamera, you go out and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself — we hope. [TopGear.com]

<![CDATA[Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION Bows In Paris, Still Mildly Fascinating]]> The Mercedes ConceptFASCINATION, just revealed at the Paris Motor Show, must be a concept, because a Benz shootingbrake is just too freaking awesome to see production. Those who like the overall design need not worry, according to Mercedes officials, it's a preview of the 2010 Mercedes E-Class. In the meantime, enjoy the fanciful exterior and see how it matches up to the fanciful interior of this sleek concept. Full press release after the jump.

Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION study showcases new design idiom

Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz builds the world’s most desirable coupés – a claim which the Stuttgart-based car maker is underlining at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with its ConceptFASCINATION design study. This unique vehicle, whose innovative and unconventional proportions interpret the emotional appeal of a coupé in a new way, represent an exciting and intelligent combination of sporty and elegant design with stylish practicality. Wood, aluminium and smoked glass give a particularly exclusive look and feel to the luggage compartment which incorporates a refrigerated compartment and a humidor as well as offering a large load space. These attributes embody the two objectives of ConceptFASCINATION – to provide a high level of practical usability and to create a coupé which appeals to the heart with fast, thrilling lines. In developing this design study, Mercedes-Benz has given fresh impetus to the long-established (although now rarely seen) “shooting brake”, a vehicle category with its own distinctive charisma. Freed from the constraints of a specifications book, the designers have created an automotive sculpture with great aesthetic appeal which once again demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s high level of design expertise.

ConceptFASCINATION is a unique jewel of compelling automotive design which is distinguished by its irresistibly dynamic lines yet still offers the benefits of a large luggage compartment. A particularly notable feature of the design is that the practical load space develops organically from the exciting and elegant lines of this lifestyle coupé, giving it its special charisma. Inside, the tone is set by fine, exceptional materials hand-crafted to the highest standard. Absolute perfection and attention to detail make this design study an incomparable gem which conveys a sense of sporty forward movement and at the same time elegance, savoir-vivre and exclusivity of the highest level.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, commented: “This design study continues the long tradition of exciting coupés from Mercedes-Benz in impressive style. With its emotionally appealing lines, ConceptFASCINATION offers a completely new interpretation of the coupé. Its aesthetic, dynamic looks and meticulously crafted detail ensure that this study meets the highest design standards."

Taut, sharply contoured lines and finely sculpted surfaces

The design study’s elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary. This impression is emphasised by the long, frameless, side-window line which creates a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. As a result, the large load space in the rear is integrated in the vehicle body cohesively and harmoniously while also creating the impression of length and a remarkable sense of light. The side windows can be lowered completely – one of the fundamental genetic markers of every Mercedes-Benz coupé – to provide an uninterrupted view of the stylish way in which fine materials have been used inside the vehicle.

A sense of forward-flowing energy is created by the wedge-shaped profile of the design study whose sides are structured by taut, clearly defined lines which grow out of the surfaces organically and disappear back into them in the same subtle way. Sensitively sculpted surfaces, alternately concave and convex, are defined by the shoulder line and undercut feature line with an additional line to form a gentle, yet pronounced linear flow complemented by an intriguing interplay of light effects. In short, flowing surfaces and arching structures create compelling forms.

The wheel arches are powerfully sculpted. In the rear wings in particular, the rounded treatment of the flared wheel arches is characterised by a degree of almost sensual exuberance – a classic Mercedes-Benz design element of the past – which is taken to an elegant conclusion in the lines of the rear. In order to maintain the flow of the surfaces and edges, the door handles are visually extended rearward of the doors into the sides of the vehicle.

A self-assured front section with a new take on the dual headlamp face
The distinctive front section of this gracefully built athlete is a picture of self-assurance. It remains loyal to the dual headlamp face, but interprets it in a more contemporary way. The now rhomboid headlamps which are set against a grey background reveal the fascinating technical details of the light units which feature the latest LED technology as well as C-shaped fibre-optic inserts which serve as discreet running lights. With its new, sharper eyes and the surrounding lines and surfaces, the “face” of the ConceptFASCINATION vehicle is both exciting and forceful.

The bonnet of the design study has pronounced contours with a central ridge which picks up the V-shape of the front end and continues it along the vehicle body. Powerfully framed, the single-louvre radiator grille with the central Mercedes star makes a very dominant and expressive statement of the brand identity.

A distinctive front apron with a small double-wing assembly at the base gives this design gem a wide, confident stance.

The great attention to detail, which can be sensed in the assurance of every line and the graceful sweep of every surface, is exemplified to perfection by a special touch in the front apron: a fine chrome trim strip runs all round the lower body of the vehicle and at the front, LED fog lamps are set into this strip.

Forward-sloping rear with pronounced V-shape

The forward-sloping rear also has a pronounced V-shape and features a spoiler, below which the third brake light is reflected in the rear window. Flat, horizontal LED lights which extend around the back, linking it visually with the sides, emphasise the width. In a styling move which is both clever and extremely harmonious, the undercut surround of the redesigned tail lights flows into the rear wings, serving as yet another example of the attention to detail made by the Mercedes-Benz designers. As at the front, the rear is completed by a small additional wing framed by four exhaust tailpipes.
Exquisite range of materials from the world of equestrianism

A large panoramic glass roof and the arc described by the uninterrupted side-window line bring a sense of light to the interior, and help it to merge with the exterior. Fine materials, such as leather, wood and aluminium, as well as high-quality woven fabrics and many carefully crafted details ensure that the sporty and stylish character of the show vehicle is also underlined on the interior.

The exquisite range of materials is inspired by the world of equestrianism and satisfies the most discerning tastes. Recalling the look and feel of a saddle, thick, dark leather covers the aluminium centre console which, like a bridge extending from the front to the rear, spans the space between the four sporty individual seats and translates the taut lines of the exterior to the interior of the vehicle with minimalist elements. Strong and natural, this leather also covers the upper section of the dashboard while its supple, flowing character means that it also lends itself to enhancing the look and feel of the door armrests.

Contrast is provided by light, fine nubuck leather which is used for the other surfaces and the four individual seats as well as by the deep-pile carpet with heavy fibres. The seat centre panels are covered in strong, high-quality fabric. Trim strips in American walnut with a fine chrome surround complete the portfolio of materials.

The characteristic V-shape of the exterior is picked up by the dashboard whose styling evokes a dynamic wing and which features an instrument cluster with five tubes and silver dials.

Luxurious load compartment with stylish details
Carefully crafted details give the load compartment a particularly luxurious and surprising character. The floor of the load compartment, which measures approximately one metre square, is made of wood with brushed aluminium protective rails. Folding up the floor at the left and right sides reveals two compartments containing two sets of binoculars as well as a high-quality digital camera with interchangeable Leica lenses – the perfect equipment for a day at the races.

The centre of the load compartment is occupied by a folding smoked glass table which rises out of the floor at the touch of a button to reveal a compartment housing a humidor. The table can also be pulled to the rear for easier access from outside. Doing so provides access to a refrigerated compartment for drinks and champagne flutes. The smoked glass can then be folded up at left and right to allow the vehicle occupants to enjoy a picnic in a stylish and refined ambience.

Driven by new, powerful and economical four-cylinder diesel engine

Not content with just indulging the senses, the ConceptFASCINATION design study impresses with its technical underpinnings, too. These are drawn from the future E-Class Coupé and include the new four-cylinder diesel engine which features BlueTEC and AdBlue technology and develops 204 hp from a displacement of 2.2 litres.

Mercedes-Benz design studies look to future styling trends

The ConceptFASCINATION study was not created merely to arouse interest in a new and unusual design concept. It is much more a matter of giving designers the opportunity to play around with unconventional topics, to look at things in a new way and to explore new ideas. Design studies also serve to stimulate a closer dialogue with customers and to gauge the public reaction to new ideas for cars. They help Mercedes-Benz designers to get a feel for future styling trends and to develop new design idioms.

The Mercedes ConceptFASCINATION is both a preview of the styling of the already-spotted-nude 2010 Mercedes E-Class, but is mocked up here as a shooting brake with a trunk full of the kind of aspirational lifestyle accessories that exist together only in the pages of wanky magazines or in the minds of Mercedes execs. Hit the jump for a whole lotta fluff masquerading itself as luxury lifestyle marketing.

<![CDATA[Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION To Debut At Paris, Preview New E-Class]]> Is the Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION, set to debut at the Paris Motor Show, a concept version of a car we're not going to get? Let's run down the list: German? Check. Shooting brake? Check. Diesel-powered? Check? Stupid name? Check. Yes, this fanciful look at a two-door wagon is but a wild way of previewing the lines of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and teasing hatch fans everywhere, though we hope we're wrong. Powered by the same small diesel mill found in the Mercedes C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Prime, the concept features a humidor, refrigerated compartment and an interior inspired by equestrianism. It just goes to show that you can bring an equestrian-themed concept shooting brake to an auto show, but you can't make an automaker build it. Press release below the jump.

With its high roofline the Bedouin also offers lots of room and seating comfort for rear-seat passengers. Even more, the increase of interior space can be used as an enclosed cargo bed by folding down the backrest of the rear seats.

"With the Rinspeed Bedouin we wanted to show that there's lots of untapped creative potential regarding multi-purpose vehicles," says Frank M. Rinderknecht (47), C.E.O. of Rinspeed AG. "From our point of view MPVs can contribute to the preservation of the world's resources since they're capable of taking on many of the specialized uses of second or third cars. And they can adapt to the specific transportation needs at hand within seconds."

The transformation trick

The almost magical transformation sequence is started by two electric motors that drive jackscrews to lift the entire roof of the vehicle. The front part of the roof then folds and in effect becomes the tailgate window while the rear part of the roof turns into the cargo bed. The tailgate is also electrically powered and can be lowered to extend the bed by another 45 centimeters to an overall length of 185 centimeters. The bed can be used to transport bulky cargo and serves as a modern tent replacement and romantic bunk for leisurely rests.

To comply with highest safety standards the entire mechanism is fitted with redundant self-locking safeties and for maximum effect is operated with a remote control.

The fastest natural gas vehicle in the world

The Rinspeed Bedouin is powered by a future-oriented environment-friendly twin-turbo engine running on natural gas. Natural gas is an extremely clean-burning fuel that consists almost entirely of methane and contains almost no sulfur.

Protecting the environment does not preclude driving fun: The four-valve engine is from Porsche and produces 420 hp / 309 kW at 6,000 rpm. It delivers its impressive maximum torque of 560 Nm at just 2,700 rpm. Performance is accordingly proud: The 1,640-kg Bedouin accelerates in roughly 5.9 seconds to 100 km/h and reaches an electronically and mechanically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Sporty thoughts ...

The sporty lines of the Bedouin attract attention even at first glance. It is a little reminiscent of the Porsche 911, type 996 Carrera, from which it takes the 4x4 platform. In keeping with the English tradition of the 'shooting break,' the sporty wagon of the affluent hunter, the roofline exhibits a dynamic swing that gradually flattens out toward the rear. The wide rear fenders and their striking air inlets exude raw power. The large air inlets in the front provide ample cooling air and also contribute to the powerful appearance of the Bedouin.

A sporty stainless-steel exhaust from Remus with milled all-aluminum tailpipes provides the adequate sound and gives the rear a unique and dynamic look.

The elaborate roof design made from aluminum profiles is witness to the engineering prowess of Rinspeed. The entire mechanism for operating the roof is hidden from view behind the sidewalls. Green-tinted Folia Tec glass in the roof louvers creates a bright and cozy ambiance even when the roof is closed.

Thanks to a sporty yet comfortable custom Eibach suspension, the body of the Bedouin sits about 15 centimeters higher than that of the Porsche equivalent. The suspension, which features adjustable ride height and firmness, offers a perfect synthesis of ride comfort and sporty handling.

The rearview mirrors as well as the front and rear bumpers are painted with sparkling crystal paint from Swarovski, which also contributed the fully crystal hood emblem and the rear badge featuring SDS technology.

In the Bedouin even the taillights look forward - into the future. In.pro. custom-developed chrome-plated LED taillights for the Bedouin, which not only initiate a new design trend but also offer increased traffic safety due to their exceptionally fast reaction time.

The entire body of the Bedouin is made up of Pre-Preg composite, a state-of-the-art plastic rarely used in automotive production. It combines a low specific weight with extraordinarily high strength.

Crystal worlds of leather

The Bedouin shows its proud heritage in the interior, too. Most of the interior of the Bedouin was retained from the Porsche 996 Carrera and was custom-upholstered with exquisite "Poltrona-Frau leather" from X-Mobil. The brown hue of the color "Cotto" harmonizes perfectly with the exterior color, which changes from slightly green to copper.

The Rinspeed designers also broke new ground in the selection of materials. In a partnership with the world-leading manufacturer of crystal glass Swarovski they created ultra-modern and visionary new interior elements. The hand-covered door panels shine in soft hues of brown and white. The gearshift-lever grip is made from solid crystal with a shift pattern embedded using endographics. Lasers were used to imprint the leather seats with Rinspeed logos, which were then in turn covered with crystals.

A seven-inch color LCD monitor folds down from a recessed position in the roofliner. It can display the signal from the rearview camera for the driver or entertain the passenger with the program of an integrated DVD player. The system was developed Blaupunkt and also allows connecting an external programming source such as a Sony Playstation.

Well shod

The Rinspeed Bedouin runs on voluminous fully off-road capable 18-inch Continental SportContact 4x4-tires in sizes 255/55 in front and 285/50 in the rear. The Continental tires combine environment-friendly design, exceptional off-road capabilities and excellent grip on road surfaces. The tires are mounted on two-piece Rinspeed aluminum wheels (8.5x18" Rim Offset 40 mm front, 10x18" Rim Offset 52 mm rear) custom-made by ATP.

The installed progressive-rate Wandfluh steering contributes greatly to the cat-like agility of the Bedouin. A mere half a turn of the steering wheel separates the full left from the full right position. This steering system makes fast steering-angle changes child play without compromising directional stability.

<![CDATA[Ferrari Breadvan]]> Oh, you're going to nitpick me about whether or not the 456 Venice is a shooting brake? Well, I call your mouth and re-raise you all in with this: Behold the Breadvan. The car is a direct result of the infamous "Palace Revolt" of 1961 when many of Ferrari's top boffins were sacked and/or quit because of a dust up with Enzo's wife. The big names? Giotto Bizzarrini, our personal lord and savior. Plus his awesome right-hand man, Carlos Chiti. These were the two cats who did the bulk of the work on the 250 GTO. Their plan? Build a better GTO. You can read all about it here, but the car they wound up creating, chassis #2819 , is a vehicle honed from a block of unadulterated awesome. Was it better than the GTO? The Breadvan was 143 lbs. lighter and was leading all the GTOs at Le Mans in 1962 when a mechanical snafu forced it out of the race. Plus, shooting, frigging brake. I think you know our answer. <![CDATA[BMW To Sell Dual-Turbo Diesel(s) In North America]]> [Note: we initially ran this piece with the headline reading, "BMW To Sell Twin-Turbo Diesel(s) In North America." Thanks to RGSEIDL for the correction] I'll try and keep this short: 3.0-liter sequential turbo I-6 good for 286 HP, 427 lb-ft of twist and a combined cycle of 35 mpg. I really can't think of much else to say. OK, fine — the 3.0-liter petrol plant in the 335i and 535i makes a bit more power (officially 300, though actual output is closer to 330 hp), much less torque (300 lb-ft) and gets a combined 20 mpg downhill. BMW's keeping its yap shut about which new world car (or perhaps cars...) is going to get the blown oil burner, but Ward's Auto is guessing that we'll be seeing both the 335d and 535d before too long. And maybe even a 635d. We're all for those, for sure, but Jalopnik would very much like to see a 135d. Preferably in wagon or shooting brake form. And the 535d Touring, too. As for the when, we're hearing late 2008. [wardsauto.com]

<![CDATA[Intermeccanica Murena 429 GT: Full On Raddest Car of All Time?]]>

Yes. I wish you could have heard the sound of my head exploding the other day as I stumbled across this absolute gem. It is simultaneously both the manliest car ever made and a first-ballot Fantasy Garage inductee. Actually, I am not even going to bother putting the Murena up to a vote because a single "no" would crush my heart. And you slobs are not to be trusted. Just look at this thing! What we know is very little, but here it is. The Murena 429 GT debuted at the New York Auto Show in 1969. The world's sexiest ever shooting-brake featured a 429-horsepower Ford 429, rich leather seats, deep pile carpets, an 8-track with 4-speakers, a 25-gallon tank with a cruising range of 450-miles and a cut glass bar in the rear. Only 11 were built. Case closed, end of story, I quit. Seriously, why am I not rich? Oh, and Intermeccanica also built a Mustang station wagon just before the Murena, naturally.

<![CDATA[Shooting for Sport: Chery Wagon Concept Set for Shanghai Debut]]>

China's Chery motors is calling on the English shooting brake as a theme for its latest concept wagon. It's the Shooting Sport, and it's set for debut at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show. But don't go looking around for floppy-eared dogs and dubiously armed, pasty men in jodhpurs. This Shooting Brake Sport one of three concepts and 27 other cars the company plans to spotlight at the show. It looks to be a kind of Euro-style MPV that's been stylized for your protection. Or lack thereof. Either way, it's another example of Chery's long march upward, the culmination of which well see as a cheapo Chrysler product or two. Those will include a subcompact for the US market, based on the Hornet concept, and an export subcompact for South American and Chinese markets. That last part comes via Automotive News.

<![CDATA[Breaking!! Ford: We're #4! We're #4!]]>

Yikes. Aside from being knocked off the number two plinth by automotive juggernaut ToMoCo and losing $12.7 billion, FoMoCo must endure the additional dishonor of being pushed back to the number four sales spot by Dr. Z's Moustache Daimler-Chrysler for the month of January. There may be a silver-lining to these gray clouds, though. Ford said that their sales to rental car companies is down 65% as compared to January 2006. Which, if you are to believe what Adrian Imonti over at TTAC is saying about rentals (we do), is good long-term news. In the short-term? How many different ways can we look at Ford and say, "Ouch — that's got to hurt?" Also, it is definitely time to bring back the Pinto Shooting Brake. At this point in time, why not?

<![CDATA[Exec: Audi Won't Build Shooting Brake]]>

It's a sad day for Englishmen and their hounds, but good news for Blighty foxes. According to one Audi executive, the company's scuttled plans to build a production model of its Shooting Brake concept. The official word likely dispatch rumors to the contrary that had persisted since the toothy prototype debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2005. Audi's product boss Ulrich Hackenberg told Dutch car site Autovisie the company didn't want to cannibalize its new TT, with which the concept shares a platform. Expect to see some of the shooting brake's design cues in the upcoming Volkswagen Scirocco, which debuted in concept form at the Paris show last September and will likely hit US dealerships in 2008 as a 2009 model.

<![CDATA[That's a Shooting Brake: BMW Refreshes the 1-Series]]>

We'll let you in on a little secret. Our favorite all-time BMW? No, not the ubiquitous-choice E39 M5. Rather, the almighty last generation M Coupe. Holy hell that is a sweet ride. Styled so that those who got it, got it; and if you didn't get it, well, bad stuff on you (see Spinelli — I can be urbane). Plus it had 315hp, wheels wider than your butt and weighed three-ounces. We mention this because those wacky Bavarians are reconfiguring the 1-Series and even though us Yanks will never see it, they are offering a shooting brake variant. Those of the Davey "Jerk" Johnson persuasion might twist up your faces and yell "Hatchback!" But I argue that anything with the rear-wheels driven and just three doors is sport wagon cum shooting brake. Especially the much rumored 300hp 135TI. BM to the W — can't we get a taste of this sweet candy?

<![CDATA[Egad!... Edag Brings "The Heat" for Auto Show]]>

This little tiny thing we call the Detroit Auto Show has gotten bigger and bigger over the years. Since that's the case, upstarts and elbow throwers the world over are having to work hard and take less than premo space to get in. Check out Edag, they've just totally jumped the gun here out in the exposed lobby. Their modded Pontiac Solstice shooting brake has been sitting out for all to see for hours and its not even formal press time yet. I must say, it looks nice in Detroit Police Department livery.

<![CDATA[Better Than Caminos? Muscle Car Shooting-Brakes!]]>

Caminos are no doubt cooler than 98% of other cars. However, Jeremy Clarkson hates them. Why? Because some thug in a hoodie will knick his fire-lighters out of the bed. Not that anyone who has ever owned a Camino would know what a fire-lighter is. Still, Jezzo's point stands. Caminos: your stuff ain't safe. However, we've found a solution, muscle car station wagons! Davey will no doubt never speak to me again, but the fact is a 1977 Pontiac Firebird shooting brake with a screaming chicken on the hood trumps an Isettamino, even if the roly poly German has a Hayabusa mill. I still love Davey, though — Mr. G. Johnson should click the link to see a very cherry Mustangamino.
