    basically he spent 2000 hours of his life even at minimum wage standards + 85K more and ended up with an ugly POS - yes it is an UGLY POS - UGLY POS - UGLY POS

    it's almost as if when approaching the rear of the car he forgot what he was doing and subbed in a Pacer and did I mention it was an UGLY POS

    good job for building such an UGLY POS that even the chinese won't try to rip this one off, something GM "could'nt" do

    (insert coughing that repetitively sounds like UGLY POS)

    Man, it's going to be hard to get used to the high-pitched whir sound of cars of the future.

    That being said, and ignoring his cockiness, I think this is awesome. It's looks great- I know- why wouldn't it? It's a Daytona.

    Can we get these electrics to go any faster though? I want to see some 200mph+ electrics that aren't on railroad tracks.

    @leavethegun-takethecannoli: Yeah, it seems like an electric sports car - with the absurd torque and ultra-low moving parts count inherent in it - should be exhibiting absurd amounts of velocity, even if it is dumping the entirety of its charge into a 1/4 mile.

    @kleinlowe: Most electrics don't have a transmission, due to the massive torque available.

    Many of these motors would allow higher speeds if you had the gearing, but since they can usually get the job done without it, they go for the weight savings of not having a transmission.

    @Mad_Science: This is all good for 0-60 but in terms of stupid-fast it leaves something to be desired. Of course with Tesla's gearbox worries it might be a bit much to ask the lone mad automotive scientist community to brew some up.

    @kleinlowe: I guess I was just making the point that it's a trade-off between top-end and in-town range/acceleration.

    If you needed to do a lot of 80mph highway cruising (like me), then the added ~200lbs of transmission is probably worth it.

    Currently, most EVs are built with in-town travel in mind, given their unsuitability for road trips (range + recharge time).

    The picture of it at a dead end is rather fitting. Unless you're just popping down to the 7-11 for some High Life, you're probably going to need to hitch a ride when the batteries give out. It's not like there's an electrical outlet every 1/4 mile anywhere I'd want to drive the thing.

    @jdoubleh's undercarriage is filthy: In case you missed it, he said "80-mile range". That'll get most of us to work and back.

    The best way to go about this, of course, is when battery costs come down: we can just have a pair of 20 or 30-pound battery packs in our car, and one or two more charging in our garage; drive home and swap it out. Or, if we could get our shit together, have it like a propane tank exchange, with manufacturer-universal designs for small cars, large cars, and light trucks.

    @FP - tittin' and shittin' with Tomsk: There was an article in Wired a few months ago where the guy-whose-name-I-forget envisioned battery swap out places all over. Just like gas stations today. It would take 5 minutes to swap batteries and be on our way. In essence, replace the gasoline infrastructure with a stack of batteries.

    Since we can't even agree on a common cell phone charging port, I don't see it happening. I do like your idea though, as long as the battery costs are not prohibitive.
