The most powerful hybrid luxury sedans will be priced from $103,125

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, December 2, 2009… BMW announced pricing today for the 2011 ActiveHybrid 7models during their North American debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. BMW's first hybrid performance/luxury sedans will arrive in showrooms in Spring 2011 with a base MSRP of $103,125 including destination and handling for the ActiveHybrid 7 and $107,025 for the long wheelbase ActiveHybrid 7L.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 Sedans feature BMW's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 mated to an

8-speed automatic transmission and hybrid electric motor. The auto stop-start feature improves efficiency without interrupted climate control and other features. Additional standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels and tires, Alcantara headliner, leather dashboard and ventilated active front seats. The Premium Sound System, Head-up Display and Rear View Camera are also standard on the ActiveHybrid 7 as are Comfort Access, Soft-close doors and Automatic trunkgate closing.

<![CDATA[MTU Series 4000 Engine... As In 4000 HP!]]> The MTU Series 4000 is a 4000 HP twin-turbo V20 engine designed primarily for ships and power-generation in mining and offshore drilling. It's so big, the assembly line consists of moving trailers.

In a past life we worked at the Detroit Diesel plant in Detroit, Michigan, where the Series 4000 is built. MTU bought the production rights years ago and still operates the trailer-based assembly line in the same building. The scale of operations is so huge, our minds have a hard time reconciling certain parts against their size. A crankshaft? It's about 10 feet long and weighs in at well over a ton. A piston? It's as big as a pumpkin. Just one of the two turbo chargers for the top-line model is bigger than a complete Renesis rotary engine. To top it off, the Series 4000 isn't even the biggest motor MTU makes. Now we just want to know — what would you try to shoehorn it into?

<![CDATA[2011 BMW F10 5-Series Brochure Scan Leak]]> This scan from Bimmerpost appears to be the upcoming 2011 BMW 5-Series in a revealing leaked brochure scan, but could this image be more than meets the eye?


The image of a bumper leaked onto the good ol' intarweb a few months ago and has given plenty of people a chance to peak at its curvaceous lines, enough time for some to even create some pretty convincing photo fakes, but is the above image one of them?

We took the shot into Photoshop and played around a bit, initially thinking it was just a chop based off of the recently revealed 2009 BMW Concept 5-Series GT. The headlights look to be the same units as on the concept, but BMW has a way with revealing production details in the design of its show cars. The other bit that's gnawing at us is the ridge line at the leading edge of the hood - it's not there in the stand-alone bumper, but this could be because it's not attached to a car or because of a later design change.

We'll know at a later date if this the real 2011 BMW 5-Series, but we've guessed and questioned it enough to now feel confident in showing you. Make your own guesses in the comments below.

The difference is while the 2009 7-Series moved with the force of 400 HP and 450 lb-ft of torque, the 7-Series ActiveHybid had an additional 20 HP and 155 lb-ft of torque on tap thanks to the addition of an electric motor. <![CDATA[The Ten Crappiest Cars Of The 2008 Monterey Auctions]]> The Pebble Beach Concours is always a spectacle of the well-heeled celebrating the well-known in the fancy-pants car show circuit. To go along with the car show wine is the cheese, also known as the Monterey Auctions, put on every year by the house of RM Auctions. There are always hit lists of the most desirable and historical cars crossing the blocks for huge sums of money; to wit, Edmunds Inside Line just did their "10 Best Cars at the 2008 Monterey Auctions" piece today. But we tire of such endeavors. That's why we dug around and found out what's at the bottom of the list. Below the fold: The ten crappiest cars at the 2008 Monterey Auctions.

1) 1909 Peerless Model 19 Touring Car

Expected haul - $350,000-$450,000 1909_Peerless_Model_19_Touring_car.jpgCough, cough, sputter! WHAT! You want how much for a clapped-out Clampit-mobile? Sure, Peerless cars have their place in history, but anything that two-boxes harder than a Volvo 240 just ain't worth that kind of scratch in our opinion. Let's say you buy it, dump a bunch of cash in it, and now its gorgeous. Congrats, you now have a tall golf cart.

2) 1941 Willys Coupe Street Rod

Expected haul - $100,000-$140,000 1941_Willy_Coupe_Street_rod.jpgWe hate to say it, but we're so over the whole Willys hot rod thing. They've been done to death and no amount of flame paint job, big rear wing and monster engine is going to get us to part with that kind of cash.

3) 1951 Nash Rambler Custom Landau "Roll-Top" Convertible

Expected haul - $40,000-$80,000 1951_Nash_Rambler_Landau.jpgTake the original quality, reliability, and road manners of a Nash Rambler, chop the top off and create a Custom Landau "Roll-Top" Convertible, three synonymous terms for 'hole in the roof', and you've got a rattly mess we'd rather pass on. Sure, Ramblers are sort of the forgotten great American classics, but we're prefer one with a nice rust patina, Indian blanket upholstery and a stinky dog in the passenger seat.

4) 1967 Porsche 912 Soft Window Targa

Expected haul - $50,000-$70,000 1967_Porsch_912_Targa.jpgAll the quality of a Porsche, none of the looks. That was probably one of the lines shot down in the marketing meetings for this car. The 912 was always sort of a bridge car, neither 356 nor 911, and parts for the beast are as easy to find as a cold beer in Stuttgart. We'll take a look at the cars on either side of the 912 thank you.

5) 1957 Volkswagen Beetle

Expected haul - $8,000-$12,000 1957_VW-Beetle.jpgIt's a Beetle, rubbing shoulders with LaSalle and Talbot Lago. It's about as out of place in this auction as a teal donk at the Gumball 3000. Oh, don't get us wrong here, it's a very nice Beetle, but considering its peers, the sale of this puppy would have been better planned elsewhere.

6) 1974 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Race Car

Expected haul - $100,000-$135,000 1974_Chevy_Camaro_IROC_Racer.jpgForget the name on the side of this IROC Camaro, and think about owning a 1974 IROC Camaro. Can you feel the little hairs on the back of your neck growing at an incredible rate? So can we. Yeah, Bobby Unser drove it. That's nice, but you'd have to be a hardcore racing wacko to want to pony up this kind of dough for a 1974 Camaro.

7) 1974 De Tomaso Pantera L

Expected haul - $125,000-$150,000 1974_Detomaso_Pantera.jpgWe've always liked the faux-exoticness of the Pantera. It's a car with essentially as much refinement as a ten pound sledge hammer, and yet it's often compared in performance with Ferraris of the day. It's the shade-tree mechanic's supercar, with a 351 Cleveland Ford in the middle. It's an easy car to modify, but still, if that's what you're after, they can be had for a whole lot less than the asking price here.

8) 1958 GMC Series 101 Pickup

Expected haul - $75,000-$125,000 1958_GMC_Series-101.jpg$75,000-plus for a pickup truck? Um, no. Go to your local Auto Trader, flip to the "Collectibles and Classics" section, buy a GMC Series 101, paint it teal, save $60,000 or more and be just as happy with the truck.

9) 1966 Amphicar 770

Expected haul - $40,000-$60,000 1966_Amphicar_770.jpgBoth car and boat, and a master of neither discipline, the Amphicar is one of those much-loved but useless cars of yore. We're betting it heard the phrase "An answer to the question nobody asked" well before it was ever leveled against the likes of the Chevy Avalanche

10) 1959 Fiat Jolly 600

Expected haul - $50,000-$60,000 1959-Fiat-Jolly.jpgWhat has wicker seats, no roof, 21.5 horsepower and costs $50,000? Why, a Fiat Jolly of course. This micro machine is perhaps the only car more useless than a Peel Trident — hey, that's at least got a roof and the ability to fry eggs on your head at high noon.


So there you have it, our picks for the crappiest cars up for sale at this year's 2008 Monterey Auctions. We know some of you will think we're heretics for picking a few of these, but by and large these rides just don't cut the mustard when masterpieces like the 1938 Bugatti 57SC Atalante are on the same block. Post publish commentary: Since some of you seem to have checked your sense of humor at the door and consider everything a serious offense to the senses now, I'll go out of my way to make it clear the term "Crappy" is being used in the jocular sense. Perhaps I didn't lay it on thick enough, but the main beef is with the culture of auctioneering driving the prices up on relatively normal cars. I don't think these are crappy, but the multi-million-dollar classic car gold rush is forcing the prices up and the prestige down on otherwise neat, but normal cars.

<![CDATA[2008 Scion tC Release Series 4.0 to Debut at Chicago, Continue Software Naming Convention]]> Toyota just dropped a press release which has everyone running to their Tandy's and Apple ]['s to make sure it's still 1987. Scion will be bringing what's called the 2008 Scion tC Release Series 4.0 to the upcoming Chicago Auto Show and will be making them available as of March. The "tC RS 4.0" as the marketeers are calling it, will have an array of "VIP-themed enhancements" such as gray sparkley paint, a body kit, embroidered alcantera seating, fancy steering wheel and shift knob and special badging. Pardon our underwhelmed reaction, but it sounds like an appearance package only a 17 year-old-old could love. If it floats your boat you better hop up real quick, grab the $2700 premium, and head down to your Scion dealer cause only 2300 are planned. Presser to the same effect below the fold.

Scion Announces Pricing for tC Release Series 4.0 - to be Displayed at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ — Scion, of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced today that the second limited-production Scion for 2008, the tC Release Series 4.0 (tC RS 4.0), will be available at dealer showrooms beginning in March. A tC RS 4.0 will be on display in the Scion booth at the Chicago Auto Show.

The 2008 tC RS 4.0 will feature Galactic Gray Mica exterior paint and will come with VIP-themed enhancements. A DAMD body kit and upper grille will make this tC standout. A color-keyed rear spoiler will also be available. Inside, the tC RS 4.0 will have gray and black Alcantara(R) seats, "tC RS 4.0" embroidered on the front and rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a black leather and dark wood RAZO shift knob. Like all Release Series vehicles, an individually numbered badge will complete the uniqueness of this vehicle.

Only 2,300 units of the tC RS 4.0 will be built. The tC Release Series 4.0 model will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $2,770 over the base price of the tC. The manual transmission tC has a base MSRP of $17,000, while the MSRP for the automatic transmission model is $17,800. The available color-keyed spoiler has an MSRP of $285, not including installation.

The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $620 and is not included in the MSRP. DPH fees for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.
