Fancy toys in budget models. It used to be, that if you wanted heated seats and other fancy interior amenities in your Chrysler Sebring or Dodge Avenger, you had to plop down more cash for the 3.5-liter V6-equipped models. Now, as the company struggles to stay afloat amid high gas prices and a weak economy, it's rethinking that approach and now looking to offer high-spec in its four cylinder models and dropping the highest trim level as part of a plan they're calling "Fight Back." At what? Hit the jump for the answer.

Auto Analyst Mike Wall explained the decision to the Detroit News:

"Given where fuel prices are at, I'm not sure that people are following the old progression that the higher the trim-level, the bigger the engine...(Chrysler) needs to hit what the customer wants, and that may be a 4-cylinder engine with leather seats and a navigation system."
This is actually the most sensible thing we've seen Chrysler do, offering customers cars that look and feel nice, but that also get good economy. Unfortunately, rivals like Honda have been doing this for years and doing so with cars that drive much better, have interiors that feel softer and in which "four-cylinder" isn't a dirty word. Here's hoping Chrysler continues this run of common sense by making cars that consumers may actually want to buy. [via Detroit News]

<![CDATA[ Careful With That Axe, Nardelli: Chrysler June Sales Plummet ]]> As further evidence that Cerberus bit off far more than it expected with its purchase of Chrysler last fall, an internal memo revealed to the Free Press shows that the last few months have been even worse than Chrysler expected. In fact, June numbers are showing an industry-wide disaster looming, with total U.S. vehicle sales down 7 percent in April, 8 percent in May, and on pace to drop 20 percent in June to an annualized rate of only 12.5 million. The memo didn't specifically mention any additional cuts at Chrysler, but CEOs don't generally send e-mails warning of a looming industry crisis just before announcing across-the-board raises.

Attempting to close on a high note, Nardelli said "We have great vehicles to sell. And keep talking up our products to your family, friends and neighbors." Unfortunately, most of Chrysler employees' family, friends and neighbors are grappling with their own layoffs and foreclosures, so putting a new Sebring in the garage isn't a top priority.

<![CDATA[ Seven New Cars We Wish Were April Fools' Day Jokes ]]> [UPDATE: Also check out our top ten list of the best...or was it the worst...April Fools' Day automotive gags.] Occasionally, an automaker likes to have a little fun on April Fools' Day by announcing a car so ridiculous it couldn't possibly be real. Unfortunately, what happens more often than not is that an automaker will announce a car so ridiculous that it couldn't possible be real... and it is. Some are poorly-styled and ill-conceived, while others seem to fill no foreseeable niche other than a need to show they're doing something, anything. Below is our list of new cars that are punch lines to jokes no one ever told (i.e. the least dragon-able new cars). [UPDATE: We've added a poll so you can proclaim the most foolish car of them all]

2009 Pontiac Vibe
2009pontiacvibe_AFC.jpg
The name suggests vibrator, but one look at this poorly re-bodied Corolla-cousin to the Toyota Matrix is likely to prevent anyone but the most hardcore red arrow-fetishist from getting off.

2009 Toyota Venza
Toyota_Venza_AFC.jpg
You know what's great about the Toyota Venza? Yeah, neither do we. As much fun as the old angled-E-pillar Camry wagons were, Toyota decided to take the concept of a Camry wagon and cross it with ugly in order to make one of those famous "crossover" vehicles. Thanks for nothing.

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible
Chrysler_Sebring_AFC.jpg
It took a keen eye, some serious hallucinogenic substances and a love of the George Foreman Grill to make the already fugly Chrysler Sebring even less fetching. Congrats to the Chrysler team for taking a car that distinguishes itself for lackluster performance and giving it a body to match. USA! USA!

2009 VW Routan
2009_VW_Routan_AFC_2.jpg
We're not sure what the conversation was like at Volkswagen HQ when they decided to rebadge a Dodge Minivan, but we imagine it's only slightly more interesting then the conversation where they decided to give it yet another preposterous and meaningless two-syllable name. What, did someone already own the rights to Asscrap?

2009 BMW X6

We have yet to drive the new BMW X6 SAV (Stupid Automotive Variation), so maybe it's a revolution in automotive design. Or maybe it's a $52,000 miscalculation that offers the convenience of neither a car or an SUV. Only time will tell.

Maybach 62 Landaulet
Maybach_63_Laundaulet_AFC.jpg
Although a concept, it's still the perfect ride for when you want to look like a million bucks because nothing says "kidnap my children" like a stretch, convertible Maybach. Rumor is they're going to build it. Oh geez.

2008 Ford Focus
ford_focus_2008_AFC.jpg
Leave it to Ford to take a car we absolutely loved when it first debuted and slowly engineer everything we like out of the car. But it's got Ford SYNC technology so... you know... victory!

<![CDATA[ The Sebring-Vanguard Electric CitiCar Takes You Anywhere At 40 MPH...As Long As It's Only 40 Miles ]]> So you want a plug-in electric but don't feel like waiting to buy a Chevy Volt or a Tesla Roadster? Do you also only need to hit 40 MPH on a straightaway and said straightaway is only 40 miles long? Then maybe you need to get yourself a 110V plug-in 1979 Sebring-Vanguard electric CitiCar. Oh, you can't find one of the 2,200 little 3.5 HP two-seaters powered by eight 6V golf-cart batteries made by the Sebring-Vanguard car company from the Florida city of the same name? No worries, there's one up on EBay and you've got about two hours left before the gavel drops. The current bid's just $1,550. Wait, you want to know more? Hit the jump — we'll pass for now, we're waiting for a second one for the other foot.

Available for auction is an electric comuta-car. This is an all electric car built in Sebring Florida in the 70's as a fight against high fuel costs and to be pollution free. You would plug it into a 110 V outlet to charge the batteries, and experience up to 40 miles of inexpensive driving at speeds up to 40 m.p.h. It is made of all aluminum and cycolac body. The advertising says that all of the components, such as, differential, brakes wheels, tires, and electrical systems have been engineered, tested and developed for specific application in an electric car. It has been made with a full roll cage crafted of aircraft aluminum to offer protection. Extra high back seats and belts are added for safety. This car was originally sold for $4,495.00 new. I do have have a few a couple pages of advertisement price sheet and a service manual.

This electric car has been sitting for years. It does not run. This is a complete car with side doors and door handles. I am not positive that this is a 1979 car as I am still looking for the title. The storage of the batteries are concealed in the bumpers. It has 763 mi. on the odometer. It is an orange car. The body has a couple minor cracks. One on the drivers door and one on the A-pillar. It has an Illinois tag on it from 1982-83, being the last time it was ran. The interior is very nice. No wear or tares. It needs cleaned up and a new set of batteries. This car is sold as is, no warranty intended or implied. I am also taking offers on the car locally so I reserve the right to pull the car from the auction at anytime. It will need to be trailered at time of pick up. There is a reasonably low reserve on the car..

<![CDATA[ Chicago Auto Show: Dub Magazine Turns Chryslers Into Pentabortions ]]> Dub Magazine, a publication known for highlighting the understated beauty of lightly customized automobiles, set up a display of lowered Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles made even odder looking with the addition of ridiculous rims. While it almost works on some vehicles, like the already chromey Chrysler 300 and Pepsi-vending Dodge Nitro, there are some vehicles that cannot be saved by anything short of explosives. An example of this is the maroon dubdubbed Chrysler Sebring with matching maroon wheels, or as we call it, the Pentabortion.

<![CDATA[ CitiCar, The Most Produced Electric Car In U.S. History ]]> With word of more alternative fuel cars coming out (like the possibly electric Cadillac Provoq), we thought it was time to visit the most successful electric car in our country's history. Approximately 2,200 Citicars (a.k.a. CommutaCars) were built by a company based out of Florida. The two-seaters were powered by a 3.5 horsepower motor connected to eight 6-volt golf-cart batteries. The result was a wedge-shapped oddity capable of approximately 30 mph and a range of 40 miles in optimal conditions.

The car is somewhat famous for being the car that Uncle Eddie pilots on the sitcom Grounded For Life (including a scene where he tries to escape it in but his brother grabs the pillar and slows it down by hand). Versions of this car that didn't end up in a scrap pile are now very minor collectibles and can even be found on eBay. We'll take one in yellow, thank you very much. [Econogics]

<![CDATA[ Chrysler Execs to Sebring, Nitro: Drop Dead ]]>

Apparently, the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Nitro are such crap, even Chrysler executives can't muster the requisite team spirit to defend them. Well, maybe not crap, per se. How about "embarrassing misses." And let's face it, these two are indeed the most embarrassing misses since Betty Ford (you'll get that joke later). Those and other descriptors turned up on an Internet Q&A among Chrysler employees who feel the company turned out two losers that are behind competitors on nearly all major categories, from design to drivetrain to fuel economy to noise and vibration. According to the online convo, the company hit a competitive target that underestimated where competitors would be when the cars were released. Yoinks.

<![CDATA[ Even If Daimler Doesn't Want It Anymore, Chrysler Still Thinks It's "Engineered Beautifully" ]]>

Despite the fact the German side of the German-American hybrid no longer wants anything to do with the 'merican side, the 'mericans are still trying to feel pretty inside. That's why they've released a set of four new ads touting their vehicles as being "engineered beautifully." That phrase apparently is the distillation of the fact that "...at its core, the Chrysler brand stands for stylish products, agile performance, refined quality and the confidence of being proud without being arrogant." Well, considering the fact that they're now seen as being Daimler-Benz's little whipping boy, I somehow don't know how much I agree with the fact that they're looking all that "proud" now, much less "arrogant." And don't even get us started on "agile performance" and make us bring up the new Sebring. But whatever it takes this jilted lover to get through the day, you know? Full release below the jump.

Chrysler Brand Debuts Campaign with New "Engineered Beautifully" Theme Line Auburn Hills, Mich., May 7, 2007 -

Stunning design and innovative technology take center stage in the new Chrysler brand TV and print ads, which break on May 8, featuring the new theme line "Engineered Beautifully."

"More than 80 percent of the Chrysler brand product portfolio is all-new or refreshed in the last 12 months with the recent introduction of the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible and the debut of the all-new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country later this year," said David Rooney, Director - Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications, Chrysler Group. "This is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase that there is more behind the sheet metal and distinctive style, and that every Chrysler possesses world-class quality and engineering at an extraordinary value."

Additionally, the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible marketing launch is May 8. The Sebring Convertible ads mirror the tone and style of the new Chrysler brand creative.

The all-new Sebring Convertible offers a sleek and elegant design, exhilarating performance with excellent fuel efficiency and a spacious interior. It also offers what no other convertible has offered before - three automatically latching convertible top options: vinyl, cloth and a body-color steel hard top, all of which can be retracted with a push of a button on the key fob.

"Chrysler is, and always has been, a brand made by and built for people with a passion for great cars," said Rooney. "Products like the 300 and Town & Country put us at the forefront of the industry in terms of style and design. At the same time, we have made great strides to become competitive and even surpass our competition in terms of quality and engineering. While we have made great strides, the perception has not caught up with reality in the marketplace. Our new communications direction will help get that engineering message across."

At its core, the Chrysler brand stands for stylish products, agile performance, refined quality and the confidence of being proud without being arrogant. The new Chrysler brand direction will communicate these core values through a unique combination of both striking design and innovation technology. Overall, Chrysler promises superior engineering and stunning designs built around customer's needs ... at a price that will surprise and delight. No other manufacturer can make this claim. It's the way our vehicles come together that sets us apart. Simply put, Chrysler vehicles are ... Engineered Beautifully.

Following are descriptions of the new broadcast spots, including those for the Chrysler brand, Chrysler Sebring sedan, Chrysler Sebring Convertible and Chrysler 300.

The Chrysler brand is also the exclusive sponsor of one chapter of the Forbes 90th Anniversary Issue and Networking Special Report covering lifestyle elements surrounding careers, entertainment, leisure and design.

Chrysler Brand
Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have more than tripled. No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame.

The Chrysler brand's succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand's standing as the leader in great design, purposeful technology and value. With the launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan and the 2007 Chrysler Aspen - the first-ever full-size sport-utility vehicle for the brand - the momentum is sure to continue with the launch of the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible and 2008 Chrysler Town & Country.

<![CDATA[ It Was 50 Years Ago Today: The Sebring Saga of the First Corvette SS ]]>

The boys at Badboy Vettes inform us that 50 years ago today, the Corvette SS XP-64 made its debut at Sebring. What was the SS XP-64 you beckon? It was a super-light 'Vette with a body of magnesium alloy, a tubular frame and a worked-over 283 ci V8 producing upward of 300 hp. The prototype was built under the guidance of the Corvette's patriarch, Zora Arkus-Duntov. The 12-hour race was to serve as a proving ground of sorts for the SS before it would be fielded at Le Mans later that year. But despite its high-tech derivation, the SS didn't last more than 23 laps before technical problems shut it down. Soon after, manufacturer-sponsored racing was banned by the American Manufacturers' Association, dooming the SS to live in test-kitchen limbo. Nonetheless, its development paid dividends on the street, if not on the tarmac of la Sarthe. The chassis from the SS eventually underpinned the iconic 1959 Stingray.

<![CDATA[ You Are There: The Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring ]]>

What is it at the core of autosport? What are the facets and edges of this jewel that holds some of us so captive? A few quick words and phrases come to mind: machine vs. machine, driver vs. driver, sound, fury, glamour and glory. Endurance sports-car racing gathers all these angles and takes them to extremes. Machines vary wildly in their look, structure and abilities, but they're all thrown together into the same battle. Drivers must not only best the opponents in their class, but also be ready to tangle with traffic in other classes, as if it were a 12-hour chase on the interstate. Stand by the track with your eyes closed and you'll hear the tune of internal combustion instruments ranging from the gentle thrum of an Audi R10 to the skull-cracking wail of an Aston-Martin DBR9. Open your eyes and you'll see the smooth shape of a Panoz contrast with the angles of a Lola prototype and with the fuzzy lines of drunks in green, sequined top hats. It was St. Patrick's Day, after all.

Sebring International Raceway sits above Lake Okeechobee, dead in the middle of southern Florida. It's a decommissioned bomber base used now for a wholly different kind of battle. The 3.7-mile circuit is one of the more punishing venues on the ALMS calendar, owing to its bumpy surface and erratic weather. Molehills become mountains over the course of a race. An uneven joint in the concrete is a hiccup when you hit it, but try having the hiccups for 12 hours.

An American Le Mans Series event is like the circus coming to town. Rings of other attractions surround the main event. The Speed (Channel) World Challenge Touring and GT classes each had their own races last weekend, as did vintage racers and one-make series of Panoz Esperantes and open-wheeled Star Mazda cars. The crowd was as diverse as the field, Maseratis filed in behind duelie pickups with bumperstickers that read, "If it's got tits or wheels it'll give you problems." I've also never seen so many people without arms in one place before. But remember, this is gator country. Now, on to the photos.

The sun set as the race entered its home stretch. The Porsche prototypes struggled to stay near the top of the order as they faced a series of electrical problems. Andretti Green Racing (Kanaan, Franchitti, Herta) and their Acura ARX P2 car had a minimum of problems and took the class lead ahead of the Acura Lola of Fernandez Racing (Fernandez, Diaz, Martinez) and the eventual third place Penske Racing Porsche of Castroneves, Bernhard and Dumas.

The GT1 Corvettes driven by Max Papis, Olivier Beretta, Oliver Gavin, Ron Fellows, Jan Magnussen and Johnny O'Connell took first and second in their class and finished well ahead of several prototype teams, including both Dyson cars.

And so it came down to GT2, the least powerful class in the whole thing, to give us the best race. The Spyker Squadron team put on an impressive showing with their C8 (in Dutch orange, naturally), but it wasn't enough to contend with the more experienced teams.

Jamie Melo in the Risi Competizione F430 and Jorg Bergmeister in the Flying Lizard 911 GT3 RSR had risen above the fray as ten o'clock rolled around and fireworks exploded overhead. The two drivers laid absolutely everything on the line, as they charged for the finish. Twelve hours or racing boiled down to hand-to-hand combat, Porsche and Ferrari engines screaming only slightly louder than the fans who were watching as the cars jostled for position. In the end, it was the Ferrari with both the position and the power as Melo flew past the checkered flag. After twelve hours and half a rotation of the Earth, Bergmeister had lost by two-tenths of a second. He may not have been happy, but none of the fans who watched felt cheated.

We'll go ahead and set aside his editorializing on a lack of understanding of the popularity of a drop-top with room in the back seat for the kids, golf clubs or a combination of the two for under $30,000. And instead, we'll just give you the new figures on the new sunniness from the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid after the jump, with the photo gallery below to remind you of the obvious styling similarities with the new hardtop version, including that styling language on the hood taken directly from a George Foreman grill.

"The base Sebring with a vinyl convertible top, four-cylinder engine, ABS and tire pressure monitoring system will start at $25,470. That's actually less than the outgoing Sebring convertible's $26,115 asking price.

The Sebring Touring, also with a standard vinyl top, adds a standard V-6 engine and 17-inch wheels and starts at $28,070. The Sebring Limited with a standard cloth top, 18-inch wheels, premium sound system and various dress-up features starts at $31,670. Prices don't include a $675 destination charge. "

<![CDATA[ Sebring GT2 Finish Mayhem ]]>

While it was little surprise that the R10 took the 12 Hours of Sebring overall, the stuff-of-legends finish happened in GT2 between Jorg Bergmeister's Flying Lizard Neun Elf and Jamie Melo's Risi F430. Maybe it was the Floridian locale that inspired it, but they got into some serious NASCAR-style paint trading on the last lap, with Melo knocking Bergmeister off balance to take the win. Badassness, manly thunder and cojones of brass abound. Check it. [Props to the wily Mr. Brennan for pointing it out.]

<![CDATA[ Borg-Warner All-Wheel Drive Coming to Sebring, Avenger ]]>

Any press release containing the words "Building on our successful launch on the 2007 Chrysler Pacifica" has a bit of a credibility problem. Fortunately, BorgWarner's spinmeisters aren't talking about the Pacifica itself. They're lauding the front wheel all-wheel drive system currently underpinning [dust collecting] upmarket examples of DCX's proto-CUV. ITM 3e is the first all wheel-drivery to reduce power to the rear wheels at highway speeds to improve fuel economy. It's yet another clever gizmo from the boffins who bring you the world's best paddle shifter (DSG). Anyway, this press release on BorgWarner's alphanumeric festival of torque-managed traction control tells us their grip-securing gee-whizzery will now migrate to the 2007 Sebring and 2008 Avenger. DCX aversive buyers needn't feel excluded; the company also sells its greasy bits to Ford, VW/Audi, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Honda, Caterpillar and Peugeot.

Press Release:

BorgWarner All-Wheel Drive System to Debut in 2007 Chrysler Sebring and 2008 Dodge Avenger

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The 2007 Chrysler Sebring and 2008 Dodge Avenger will offer BorgWarner's Interactive Torque Management (ITM 3e(TM)) system as an option for drivers who value performance, fuel economy and stability. The sophisticated technology, which debuted last year, is the latest, next-generation interactive technology available as part of BorgWarner's growing iTrac(TM) torque management systems portfolio, a full- line of active torque management devices focused on the needs of the expanding front-wheel drive/all-wheel drive market.

"We are proud to launch another front-wheel, all-wheel drive application with DaimlerChrysler, using BorgWarner's new ITM 3e(TM) system," said Cindy Niekamp, President and General Manager, BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems. "Building on our successful launch on the 2007 Chrysler Pacifica, adapting this technology to additional applications was the natural progression. As a global leader in advanced front-wheel drive-based all-wheel drive technology, we are pleased to provide the next generation of Chrysler and Dodge drivers with the enhanced vehicle traction, stability and handling that the system offers."

In addition to providing the ITM 3e(TM) hardware, BorgWarner will also supply the electronics, software controls, and vehicle integration support. These capabilities are core competencies of BorgWarner and provide automakers like Chrysler Group with outstanding vehicle performance.

The ITM 3e(TM) system exercises sophisticated controls and algorithms to sense slip, and seamlessly converts the front-wheel drive-based platform to all-wheel drive within milliseconds. This augments vehicle handling by optimizing traction of both the front and rear wheels. At highway speeds, the system automatically reduces power transfer to the rear wheels, which improves fuel economy versus other all-wheel drive systems. In addition, the ITM 3e(TM) system is designed to work in cooperation with other vehicle systems like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability programs to further enhance traction and stability.

Auburn Hills, Michigan-based BorgWarner Inc. (NYSE:BWA) is a product leader in highly engineered components and systems for vehicle powertrain applications worldwide. The FORTUNE 500 company operates manufacturing and technical facilities in 63 locations in 18 countries. Customers include Ford, VW/Audi, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Honda, BMW, Caterpillar, Navistar International, and Peugeot. Hope you weren't planning on using those brakes in your new '07 model Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep-branded — umm — anything. We've just heard the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's recalling 62,369 vehicles for what Reuters says is a need to "reprogram a computer that is related to the brake system." And it's a lot of models affected: the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV's. Hmm. Maybe we should have stuck with just telling you the vehicles the Chrysler Group's not recalling.

<![CDATA[ USA Today Gives 2007 Sebring a Handjob ]]>

Oh dear. While our impending Sebring review will go down in teh internets annuls as "why Loverman is unemployed," one thing is certain — the 2007 Chrysler Sebring is an abomination. One of the most visually vile cars to ever come to market. However, James Healy of the full-color-weather-maps-on-page-one rag writes, "The front of the car is dramatic, alluring, exciting." Um... Bullshit! He continues, "It has a special charm, especially visually" Oy vey iz mir... Can you do that? Can you just make shit up? Really? And his paychecks don't bounce? Unbelievable.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: No-Name Dodge Crossover ]]> Dodge-JC49-Crossover-Spy-Photo.jpgThe shooters at KGP have snapped shots of a crossover vehicle we've heard is code-named JC49 — it's a vehicle which will supposedly be built on the frame of the new Sebring/Avenger platform. Where what we've heard has diverged from what others are saying is on what market the new CUV (plus its potential Chrysler-branded cousin, which apparently has a similarly alphanumeric name — the JZ49) is heading for. The people at the ever-curvaceous Road claim it's meant to fight off the Toyota Highlander and Ford Edge on these shores — but we've heard it's to be built out of the Toluca, Mexico plant that's currently building PT Cruisers, and that it's meant to fight MPV's from a broad-range of competitors across the pond in Europe. It may be part of the Chrysler Group's plans to fight them over there while making cars that aren't selling over here — or something like that.

<![CDATA[ Chrysler Group's Joltin' Joe Eberhardt Blames Jennifer Love Hewitt For The New Sebring Convertible ]]>
The cantankerous Joe "It's The Dealers Fault" Eberhardt already has a scapegoat primed and ready if sales numbers for the new Sebring convertible unveiled at the LA Auto Show don't quite meet with expectations, and scapegoat, thy name is Jennifer Love Hewitt. That's right, because according to Joltin' Joe's comments at the LA unveiling:

"We think we've got a real hit on our hands. But what we think, doesn't really matter...what counts here is what the people in sunny Southern California think of our new Sebring convertible. So, we decided to conduct a focus group. A focus group of one. That one, is someone who's been a star...since...17 years ago, and who knows what Southern Californians look for in a convertible...Jennifer Love Hewitt!"
Isn't it just like a car exec to already have a scapegoat planned and ready to go in case of trouble? But seriously, who would have thought it'd be JLH — we mean, she seems so kind and likable — but still, it's hard to argue with a comment like that whereby Eberhardt makes it clear she's the only one he's answering to on something as critical as design and options. Say it ain't so, Joe! At least he's shown us how the hard-top goes up and down in the second video we've got below.

<![CDATA[ Weird, Contorted Shapes: The Chrysler Sebring Reveal ]]>

Joltin' Joe Eberhardt made the scene in Los Angeles and spouted off about the beauty of the Sebring and Chrysler's place in the pantheon as America's Convertible Company. Boom boom, out rolled the car, the top went down in a synchronized dance of joy, and Kasey decided that the Sebring convertible was actually pretty cool. Johnson, on the other hand, remains skeptical. Then a group of people ascended ropes lowered from the ceiling, and tied themselves into grotesque forms. At some point, Jennifer Love Hewitt showed up. All-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Tops Segment with Class-leading Innovations and Three Convertible Top Offerings

Chrysler brand reinforces its leadership position as America's favorite convertible company with all-new Sebring Convertible
Three automatically latching tops, including a retractable hard top, can drop with the press of a button on the key fob
Spacious interior makes comfortable room for four adults; exceptional cargo room easily fits four golf bags, two golf bags when top is dropped
Exhilarating performance with excellent fuel efficiency of 31 mpg and Flexible-fuel Vehicle (FFV) engine availability

Chrysler is raising the roof on the convertible segment, introducing the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. This completely redesigned Sebring Convertible is built on the company's new D-segment platform and offers what no other convertible on the road can offer: Chrysler's sleek and elegant design, exhilarating performance with excellent fuel efficiency, a spacious interior that comfortably sits four adults and enough room in the trunk to hold two golf bags, even when the top is dropped.

The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible also offers what no other convertible has offered before—three automatically latching convertible top options: vinyl, cloth and a first for this new 2008 Sebring Convertible, a body-color painted steel retractable hard top, all of which can be retracted with a push of a button on the key fob. Top that with a standard power hard tonneau cover on all models, and top up or down, Sebring Convertible provides the benefits of coupe and the true open-air freedom of a convertible, all at a surprisingly affordable price.

"America's favorite convertible is now better than ever," said George Murphy, Senior Vice President—Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. "The all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible offers the unprecedented combination of unmistakable road presence, athletic handling, innovative technologies, as well as plenty of room for people and gear. In fact, the all-new Sebring Convertible is the only convertible in the segment that can pass the two-golf-bag test. The sky's the limit on what this vehicle can accomplish in the marketplace."

The Chrysler Sebring Convertible has long held the honor of America's favorite convertible, solidly leading the segment for the past decade. In fact, Sebring Convertible has earned the title of best-selling convertible in the United States for seven of the past 11 years. The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is poised to reign supreme when it becomes available in U.S. dealerships in the second quarter of 2007 and in global volume markets in the second half of 2007.

In markets outside North America, Sebring Convertible will be the first D-segment cabriolet for the Chrysler Group to offer both a diesel engine and right-hand-drive availability, thereby equipping the vehicle to become a stronger competitor in the segment.

Elegant Design both Inside and Out, Top up or Down
Chrysler designers looked at the future brand showroom when seeking inspiration for the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. From the original sketches to the production vehicle, the all-new convertible was designed to provide a familial tie to its new sedan sibling, and the resemblance is unmistakable. Beyond that, the convertible stretches the look to create usable space in the trunk when the convertible top is stowed.

"Top up or down, the all-new Sebring Convertible's design captures the essence of the Chrysler brand," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President—Design. "The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible's design is a showcase for the expressive, refined, athletic and passionate."

From the front view, the new Sebring Convertible shares many traits with its sedan sibling, including the distinctive face of Chrysler, the brand's signature eggcrate grille and a uniquely sculptured hood that features the Chrysler brand's elegant lines. The Chrysler winged medallion is centered at the top of the grille just below the leading edge of the hood. Large quad headlamps wrap around to the side of the vehicle, where the all-new Sebring Convertible's profile takes on a shape all its own.

The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible's wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer, and the car is 3.5 inches taller and more than 2 inches wider than the vehicle it replaces. Its overall length also is 3 inches longer than the sedan, which lengthens the side profile and provides enough cargo room in the trunk to hold two golf bags when the roof is retracted. Sebring Convertible's profile is defined by a long hood, a long roofline and a high chrome beltline, all of which give the vehicle a nicely proportioned, elegant greenhouse with the top up. Designers also minimized the width of the C-pillar, improving the convertible's sleek side profile and increasing rearward visibility when the convertible top is up. Sculpted character lines run across the body, underneath the door handles and across the lower bodyside, producing the Sebring Convertible's athletic stance.

From the rear, wide tail lamps are mounted on the corners and deck lid for visibility and visual impact. Rear fog lamps mounted in the backup lamps help maintain a uniform appearance among models sold around the world. Chrome-tipped dual exhaust outputs hint at the Limited model's performance capability when equipped with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle.

World-class Craftsmanship
The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible's interior features a modern, clean design with intense focus on quality, detail, craftsmanship and execution. Soft surfaces on interior touch points, including the instrument panel cover and door arm rests, complement the convertible's luxurious interior.

Inspired by the Chrysler winged badge, the convertible's center stack features a Chrysler signature analog clock, which is surrounded by dual heating and air conditioning vents. Sebring Convertible's instrument panel also includes a locking glove box that can secure important documents and small items. The center floor console features dual storage bins and a sliding armrest that moves 3 inches to provide a comfortable position for all drivers.

As many as four occupants can experience the new Sebring Convertible's comfortable, roomy interior. Occupants sit 2.5 inches higher than they did in the previous Sebring Convertible model, giving them a command-of-the-road seating position. Rear seat passengers also have plenty of leg and head room, making this a functional convertible that can be enjoyed year round in all seasons.

All 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible models feature a two-tone interior theme with dark and lighter shades of Khaki or Gray on the instrument panel and door trim. The Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited model also features an exclusive Cream and Pebble Beige interior with leather seats. Interior accents include Alloy Silver and chrome on the Sebring Convertible model, Satin Silver and chrome on the Touring model and Satin Silver, chrome and Tortoise Shell on the Limited model.

Thoughtful Attention to Details
The Sebring Convertible's development team paid keen attention to details, finding ways to make life easier for the driver and passengers, while creating a clean design in the process. The result is a 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible that delivers many standard innovative and thoughtful features that will both surprise and delight the driver and passenger, including:

A trunk spacious enough to hold four golf bags when the convertible top is up and two golf bags when the convertible top is down
Available remote convertible top operation on the key fob
No manual convertible top latches, as Sebring's new convertible top system automatically latches
A standard power hard tonneau that neatly conceals each of the three convertible tops when retracted
Seatbelts integrated into the front and rear seats, which looks clean, enhances seat comfort and makes it easier for passengers to get into the back seat
Easy-entry rear seat, as passenger seat features slide and memory recline position
Available remote start that allows drivers to warm up or cool down their convertible from a distance
An available windscreen that reduces wind and road noise
A locking glove box that can secure important documents and small items, top up or down
An available heated/cooled cup holder that keeps warm beverages warm and cold beverages cool

Passenger seat back that includes a map pocket for storage
Doors that include map pocket inserts

Exhilarating Performance with Excellent Fuel Efficiency
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible is available in the United States in three models: Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Chrysler Sebring Convertible Touring and Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited.

Three engine options power the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible sold in the United States: the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, an available Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick.

Fuel economy is a high priority for many of today's car buyers, and the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible's standard four-cylinder engine rivals the best four-cylinder engines in the segment. Sebring Convertible's 2.4-liter World Engine with dual variable valve timing delivers fuel efficiency of 23 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, as well as smooth, quiet operation. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this new engine provides a 15 percent increase in horsepower (173 horsepower vs. 150 horsepower) and an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine it replaces.

An available FFV 2.7-liter V-6 engine provides value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competition's four-cylinder engines. Chrysler Sebring Convertible Touring model's 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 189 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque, providing more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces. This 2.7-liter V-6 engine achieves 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. It also can operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85.

Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited models sold in the United States also are available with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the 3.5-liter V6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as smooth quiet operation. Sebring Convertible's 3.5-liter V-6 engine achieves 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

SOLID STRUCTURE PROVIDES A SMOOTH RIDE
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible was engineered to have an extremely rigid body structure, which provides its quiet, comfortable ride, devoid of cowl shake, even when the top is down. Compared with the model it replaces, the new Sebring Convertible's body structure is substantially stiffer than its predecessor in bending and torsion—especially bending—due to very large sills. In fact, its new front-wheel-drive architecture and the three-box vehicle design contribute to a body that is 2.5 times stiffer in twist and 1.5 times stiffer in bending than the previous generation convertible. These refinements also make the new Sebring Convertible structure stiffer than other convertibles on the market that cost thousands of dollars more.

A Breath of Fresh Air
The all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible brings new levels of function and technology to the U.S. convertible segment. Innovative new features include the cutting-edge MyGIG navigation/entertainment/infotainment system, a heated/cooled cupholder, YES Essentials stain-resistant seat fabric and an available feature every convertible owner will love—the ability to drop the convertible top and all four windows with the push of a button on the key fob. .

"The all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible does for the convertible segment what the Chrysler 300 did for the large car segment and the all-new Sebring Sedan does for the mid-size sedan segment—it brings innovative, useful technologies to customers," said David Rooney, Director—Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. "These features make life easier and safer for the driver and passengers, while making the overall driving experience much more enjoyable for all."

The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible features MyGIG, a cutting-edge information, entertainment and safety navigation audio system that raises the bar on in-vehicle communications This best-in-class, next-generation navigation radio features a 6.5-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colors, providing a three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. The MyGIG system follows voice-activated commands and includes many new features for music, sound, movies and personalized picture displays, including:
A 20 gigabyte hard disc drive that includes Music Juke Box for organizing music and pictures on the hard drive
Universal Serial Bus (USB) provides both MP3 connectivity and downloading of WMA, MP3 and JPEG files onto the hard drive
Gracenote database installed on the hard drive, which provides song identification, including composer, artist and title
Playlist creation capability to provide easy access to files
Voice memo recording, which allows a message up to 3 minutes long to be recorded using the microphone integrated into the rearview mirror
Radio screen, which can display movies (when vehicle is not in motion)
SIRIUS Satellite Radio, which provides customers with more than 125 channels of the best music, entertainment and information coast-to-coast, 24 hours a day. This includes 100 percent commercial-free music, as well as sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic and weather
UConnect Hands-free Communication System that uses Bluetooth technology to provide voice-activated wireless communication between the occupants' compatible cell phones and the Sebring Convertible's onboard receiver. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility

Class-leading Safety Features
The all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible also offers a unique combination of class-leading safety features that are designed to keep occupants both safe and secure, top up or down.

A new integrated seat-belt system for 2008 connects all seat belts to the seats, making them more comfortable for the driver and passengers, as well as making it much easier for passengers to get in and out of the rear seat.

Sebring Convertible's safety cage is constructed with dual-phase, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel components designed to protect occupants in all driving situations. Side-guard door beams help protect occupants in side impacts.

Sebring Convertible's extremely strong safety cage is complemented with standard advanced multi-stage front air bags and standard front-seat-mounted side air bags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard on all 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible models. Electronic Stability Program also is available.

Rising to the Top
The 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible competes primarily in the Standard Specialty segment, with some consideration from Luxury Specialty segment buyers in the U.S. market. The convertible portion of the Standard Specialty segment has remained fairly steady over the past 5 calendar years, with an average of 150,000 units sold each year. The convertible segment is expected to achieve steady growth in the near future, due to a trend toward niche vehicles.

In the United States, Chrysler Sebring Convertible is designed to appeal to successful Baby Boomers who want a car for themselves. They love the open-air freedom of a convertible, but also appreciate that the new Sebring Convertible is practical 365 days of the year. These buyers are 40-50 years old, and 70 percent of them are married. They are well-educated and earn a median income of approximately $90,000. Fifty percent are male, 50 percent are female and 60 percent are college-educated. These Sebring Convertible buyers are fun, carefree, classy, friendly, smart and easy-going. The all-new Chrysler Sebring Convertible meets their demands for a vehicle that can do triple duty for going to work, running errands and pleasure drives with the top down.

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Production
Production of the 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible begins in the first quarter of 2007 at the newly refurbished Sterling Heights (Mich.) Assembly Plant. Sebring Convertible's new 173 horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine is built in the state-of-the art Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) plant in Dundee, Mich. The 2.7-liter V-6 engine and the 3.5-liter V-6 engine are built at the Kenosha (Wis.) Engine Plant.

Chrysler Brand
Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image, culminating in 2005 calendar year sales of 649,293 units—an all-time sales record. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have jumped 251 percent. No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame.

"The Chrysler brand's succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand's standing as the leader in great design, purposeful technology and value," Rooney said. "With the introduction of the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible, as well as the launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring and the 2007 Chrysler Aspen—the first-ever full-size SUV for the brand—the momentum is sure to continue," he added.

Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA)
The World Engine is a family of world-class four-cylinder engines produced by GEMA in Dundee, Mich., delivering an exceptional combination of quality, fuel efficiency, refinement and performance. GEMA is owned equally by DaimlerChrysler Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. By optimizing the three joint venture partners' strengths, global economies of scale and the latest practices in flexible teams and machines, GEMA aims to set a new benchmark in engine plant productivity.

CHRYSLER REVEALS STUNNING SEBRING CABRIO AT LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW

Chrysler Group has today revealed the new Chrysler Sebring Cabrio that will be launched in the UK at the end of 2007.

All UK models will feature a retractable hard roof that folds into three sections and stows in less than 30 seconds. Standard roof system features include remote control operation from the key fob, standard powered tonneau cover and automatic latching.

Right hand drive models will be available with a 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine with six-speed automatic gearbox offering 189 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. A 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine with six-speed manual will also be available with140 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque.

Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler Group, said: "Over the last decade the Sebring has been America's favourite convertible and this latest model is ideal for European markets with a folding hard roof and choice of petrol and diesel engines.

"The new Sebring is a stunning four seat two-door Cabrio that will offer outstanding value for money compared to competitors like the Saab 9-3 and Audi A4 in the UK. The Cabrio offers more than enough room for four adults plus exceptional cargo space. It is three inches longer than the Sebring saloon and there is luggage space for four golf bags with the roof up and two golf bags when the roof is retracted."

<![CDATA[ Exclusive 2006 SEMA Preview: Chrysler's SEMA Sebring's Sexier Than The Original ]]> Now this is what the Chrysler Sebring should have been — long lines on the front — but none on the hood, toss in those working air scoops, a 4.0-liter V6 pushing out what has to be more than 250 hp, and — pardon my domestic hard-on here — but dammit if I ain't in love. This is Chrysler's official SEMA concept Sebring — and I had the opportunity to get a first-hand look at it today as I travelled over to the inner design sanctum of the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid — the DaimlerChrysler Tech and Design Center. Here's the first of six custom "SkunkWerks" vehicles put together by the design and engineering team for this year's SEMA show — you know, for fun. We'll get you more information as we know it — but for now, feast your eyes on the prettiness that could have been — if only Chrysler had the requisite-sized testes to do it. Full gallery below.

<![CDATA[ Sebring 1962 Redux: Chesil to Unveil Porsche RS60 Spyder Replica in the UK ]]>

It's not like there's never been a Porsche RS60 Spyder replica before. Lots of hand-built specimens with double-digit horsepower are out there, some stitting rather pretty atop a VW Beetle chassis. But if the replicists at Chesil Motor Company remain true to form, the Chesil RS60 could be at the head of the class. Sporting a spaceframe chassis and an air-cooled flat four expected to produce 180 hp, the fiberglass-bodied replicar (sorry, reproduction model) of the Sebring-winning Porsche 718 RS 60 could have us on a plane to Blighty faster than you can say "Bob's not really your uncle, he mommy's special friend." The unveiling will take place on September 20 in Cotswold.

<![CDATA[ (Not) Breaking (The Bank)! Chrysler Prices Sebring, Aspen ]]>
2007-Chrysler-Aspen-400.jpg

The American side of the German-American hybrid must be looking for the new Durango Aspen and Avenger Sebring to lift the Chrysler Group out of the summer doldrums, because at the price point they're dropping the two newest additions to the family, we feel like they're trying to make sure they won't need to cut production numbers. The Aspen, a full-size premium SUV, will have a starting price of...

...$31,490 and the new-for-2007 Chrysler Sebring will retail at a base price of $18,995. For the Sebring that represents a 6% drop in price from the current model.

There's no doubt the Sebring (despite that nasty-ass Crossfire-ish hood) will sell well — given numbers the past few years and especially at that price point (right in between the Accord and Camry). But the Aspen? Is there really anyone out there, especially Durango-weary dealers, who need a new big SUV? And with Tom LaSorda's comments last week on big SUV sales and the need to cut production, wethinks maybe we'll be watching those sales numbers through the end of the year and see how they're selling come the spring.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: More on the Chrysler Sebring Convertible ]]>

Tipster Dave tipped us off to a couple of revealing images of the next Chrysler Sebring Convertible, spied in Metro Detroit (c'mon Wert!). We'd only seen the new Sebie in DCX's famous autofocus-thwarting polka-dot paintjob, but as the shot indicates, matte black is a bit more pleasing to the eye. No word yet on that retractable hardtop, but rumor has it both hard and soft tops will be on offer when the model hits the forecourts in 2007.

<![CDATA[ No Free Mustache Rides From Dr. Z -- How About A Free Dodge Challenger Instead? ]]>
Other than the PT Cruiser PCH Edition, the big news out of the Chrysler shindig this morning next to Duggan's Irish Pub on Woodward Avenue was the answer to apparently one of the most asked questions on the "Ask Dr Z" website. Although we were hoping more for the answer to the question, "Do you give free mustache rides?" — the question Dr. Z's minions answered today was still pretty good — "How can I win a Dodge Challenger, or another Chrysler Group product?" The press release below the jump can give you all the details how you can win one of nine Chrysler Group cars — three Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds, three Chrysler Sebrings, and yes, three Dodge Challengers — we were more impressed with the hooplah surrounding the giveaway — including the dubiously legal driving of a non-street-legal car down a small stretch of Woodward Ave. In fact, so impressed were we, we dropped the pictures into a gallery for your enjoyment — and probable evidence for prosecution by the Royal Oak Police Department.

Consumers to Win All-new Dodge Challenger, Chrysler Sebring and Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited in Dream Car Sweepstakes

* Chrysler Group Sweepstakes is next phase of popular "Ask Dr. Z" campaign
* Dodge Challenger T-shirts to be sold at Woodward Dream Cruise; proceeds to Gail Purtan Ovarian Cancer Research Fund

Royal Oak, Mich., Aug 15, 2006 -

How can consumers win a Dodge Challenger — or an all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring or Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited? By asking Dr. Z, of course.

Consumers can enter the "Ask Dr. Z" Dream Car Sweepstakes between Aug. 15 and Sept. 4 by going to www.AskDrZ.com, after visiting any Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealer showroom. George Murphy, Senior Vice President - Global Brand Marketing, Chrysler Group, announced the Dream Car Sweepstakes here on Woodward Avenue, kicking off the 2006 Woodward Dream Cruise.

"The Woodward Dream Cruise is all about dream cars and is the perfect place to introduce the 'Ask Dr. Z' Dream Car Sweepstakes," Murphy said. "The 'Ask Dr. Z' campaign has resulted in positive consumer feedback and increased brand Web site traffic, and we're building on that by driving even more consumers to www.AskDrZ.com and ultimately increasing traffic in Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge showrooms.

"We believe consumers will jump at the chance to win Chrysler Group's dream vehicles — the Challenger, which looks right at home on Woodward; the completely-redesigned 2007 Chrysler Sebring, and the latest rendition of a true American icon, the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited," Murphy added.

A total of nine vehicles will be awarded: three all-new Dodge Challenger models, three all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring models and three all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon models.

Dodge Challenger
Unprecedented public response to the Dodge Challenger concept resulted in Chrysler Group announcing last month that after nearly 35 years, the Dodge Challenger will return as the ultimate modern American muscle coupe.

Set to debut as a 2008 model in calendar-year 2008, the Challenger will feature the long hood, short deck, wide stance and two-door coupe body style that distinguished the iconic Challengers of the 1970s.

Chrysler Sebring
With the all-new 2007 Sebring, Chrysler is creating inspiration in the common car. An all-new mid-size sedan, Chrysler Sebring combines stunning design with interior craftsmanship, high levels of safety and reliability, exhilarating performance and excellent fuel efficiency — all at a surprisingly affordable price. Sebring also features many class-leading technologies not available in the mid-size segment.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Featuring a one-of-a-kind, four-door open-air design, the all-new 2007 Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited expands the Jeep experience to new dimensions. With room for five adult passengers — a Wrangler first — and the most cargo space ever offered in a Wrangler, the Unlimited combines class-leading off-road capability with everyday practicality.

Ask Dr. Z campaign
The Dream Car Sweepstakes is the next phase of Chrysler Group's "Ask Dr. Z" ad campaign that focuses on consumer benefits of the best of American and German Engineering and Design — and specifically on the innovative design, quality, reliability, performance and fuel economy of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles. The campaign's spokesperson is DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche.

In the first six weeks of the campaign, there have been more than 600,000 visitors to the Web site and more than 4.2 million questions have been answered.

"The 'Ask Dr. Z' campaign has driven our brand Web site traffic up consistently by 15 percent over June and our Web leads have increased by 27 percent," Murphy said. "And recent Millward Brown research shows that 83 percent of in-market consumers find Dieter credible and believable, and 73 percent stated they understood Chrysler Group vehicles combine the best of American and German engineering and design — additional evidence that our message is getting through.

"Furthermore, IAG Research — a third-party service which measures advertising effectiveness, reports that the campaign is significantly outperforming almost every IAG automotive norm," Murphy added.

Chrysler Group at Woodward Dream Cruise
The 12th annual Woodward Dream Cruise — billed as the largest one-day celebration of car culture, attracting approximately 1.7 million people and more than 40,000 cars — takes place on Saturday, Aug. 19. Located in the Northwood Shopping Center at the southwest corner of 13 Mile Road and Woodward in Royal Oak, Chrysler Group will host a variety of interactive, classic and concept vehicle displays.

Various Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Mopar® merchandise and apparel will be sold at the displays — including made-for-Woodward "Dodge Challenger - It's A Go!" T-shirts. Proceeds from the shirt sales will be donated to the Gail Purtan Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Karmanos Cancer Institute.

<![CDATA[ MyGig Has A Hard Drive, How About Yours? ]]>
One of our biggest beefs with most car stereos is the inability to hook up our beatiful black Video iPod. Unless it's got an aux input, the tangle of wires and fm transmitters we normally need to connect our tunes to our ride gets real old, real fast — especially when you're hooking up with a gal in the front seat and she starts to try to get in close — and gets caught in the wires or jams her elbow into your transmitter. Talk about a total mood-killer. Well, Chrysler has hit a new bar in trying to provide a way for us to get the Burt Bacharach tunes to drive the ladies wild pumping through our speakers. It's the MyGig — a 20GB hard drive embedded in the dashboard for ripping CDs, storing navigation data and all sorts of other fun stuff — including the necessary aux input. You'd expect this type of a system in a $40,000 luxury car — but you can have this in the new $25,000 Chrysler Sebring — as well as two other vehicles in the price range (the upcoming Dodge Nitro and the Jeep Wrangler) Check it all out after the jump.

An Aux input. A necessity for those of us jamming to the iPod.

An AM/FM radio. An oldie, but a goodie.

A CD/DVD player. It plays DVDs on the back seat's optional display or on the front-seat LCD when the car is parked.

Embedded Sirius satellite radio. It's a single chip in the radio, instead of a separate module, with real-time traffic reporting and the ability to route you around a traffic tie-up.

A 20GB hard drive. The drive is ruggedized for automotive use.

A USB jack. You use it for transferring music from memory keys. Also, a line-in jack for playing music off portable players. Unlike Fiat's Blue&Me LINK and several replacement radios, this is for flash-based keys only, not music players. There's no dedicated iPod controller option, though.

Two audio outputs. One goes to the car's speakers, the second to the rear-seat headphones if buyers opt for the console-mounted rear-seat LCD display.

Bluetooth hands-free calling. It's called U-Connect by Chrysler.

A 6.5-inch LCD panel. It also has a touchscreen and voice control.
