On the bright side, that's two fewer beat-ass Ford Orions on the road.

I didn't know Alan Jackson was big in Europe:

    Well if i had money

    Tell you what I'd do

I'd go downtown and buy a GT-R or two

    Crazy bout a GT-R

    Lord I'm crazy bout a GT-R

    I'm gonna buy me a GT-R

And cruise it up and down the road

I can't see the problem in the "cash for clunkers" when it means you can get 2 GT-Rs. The only problem with this law is the scrapping of great cars. I'm going to keep my 97 Pontiac Sunfire for future DOTS.

I'm getting the giggles imagining Jezza saying "I blew my tranny" in his round, oh-so-British tones.

I just bet you did, Jeremy.

At least on the bright side, with the built in GPS the government will always know where they are.

The problem is that the environment is a public good. Individuals don't have incentives to preserve the environment if it means sacrificing their own consumption. Plus, they only have short term utility (unlike countries, which last for many lifetimes). That's why people believe that government regulation is necessary, including getting rid of old polluting vehicles.

You can't rationally argue that because one such program has loopholes, all similar programs will fail. Furthermore, the two GTRs do not reflect on the entire pool of cars that were obtained through this program. Maybe a vast majority of the cars were mini cars that get 40 mpg. The issue of "stimulating the economy" is also not addressed.

Did emissions decrease overall as a result of this program? What were the effects on the UK economy? These are two unanswered questions that define whether your argument is valid.

I was listening to NPR's Forum this morning and the Edmunds.com lady said the UK clunkers program was having some problems. I didn't know this was the problem. Wow.

How does buying a Japanese car stimulate the economy in Britain except for a couple of sales guys. They should make a "clunker for clunker law" and allow the British to trade in there clunker for a new car made in Britain.

@Flathead Smith: Same thing should go for the Cash-For-Clunkers program here in the US. You sell a car to buy a US-made new car. My mother intends to scrap my brother's perfectly functional 1995 Ford Thunderbird with less than 100k on it so she can use the $1500 she'll get on a Subaru Forester. Knowing her, she won't get the XT model, either, so I'd much rather force her hand into buying American.

@Flathead Smith: well in addition to creating jobs from shipping to sales, apparently both of those GT-Rs also generate both sales tax and an additional £405 in gas-guzzling tax every year. For every 20 of them people buy, the yearly gas guzzler tax pays for one civil servant!

    @will: or a Corolla S!

Did we ever get an editorial ruling on the most pointless sport trim package ever... I would guess that the Corolla S would have one that based on the thread...
