Guide To F1 Victory Champagne: An Innuendo-Laden List Of How It's Done

Blasting giant bottles of champagne has been a Formula One tradition almost as long as the swig of milk taken on the stand at the Indianapolis 500. So, of course, there are certain stylistically unique ways of celebrating victory, or at least near-victory. GridCrasher has come up with a clever list of 13 types of post-race podium pandemonium that includes pearl necklaces, ninjas, and Mexican stand-offs — just as any decent list mentioning Michael Schumacher should. Michael Schumacher's Son Competes In First Race

Despite a recent crash, Michael Schumacher's new motorcycle racing career has shown that he really has a natural talent for going fast, no matter what the vehicle. Of course, nobody doubts that the seven-time Formula One champion has skill. The question is whether that talent runs in the Schumacher DNA. Sure, brother Ralf has had a decent career in F1 too, but since both siblings grew up on a karting track, it might be a case of nurture over nature. So what about Michael's son, Mick Schumacher? The European press are already calling the kid "Schumi III", but he just started his racing career. More »

Schumacher Falls Off Triumph Motorcycle In France, Goes Boom

With Schumi taking up riding around on two wheels, we knew it had to happen to Michael Schumacher eventually, especially after one of us got himself into a bit of a motorcycle accident. But really, we'd hoped we could have been there to see it ourselves in person. That's right, Michael Schumacher, the F1 champ-of-champs, crashed his Triumph Daytona 675 on the French track of Bresse. It looks like what happened was...

Michael Schumacher Wants You To Get Wasted Responsibly

We all know that seven-time Formula One Champ Michael Schumacher loves to race taxis to the airport. But apparently when he goes out for a drink, he lets the cab driver take the wheel. Schumacher has just produced this short spot in partnership with Bacardi to encourage responsible drinking. It will be shown internationally, though we doubt that means you'll see it on your telly in the states.

Famous Schumacher Taxi On Sale: Bid Fast, Bid Very Fast

We told you about Schumacher's Taxi Ride in which he commandeered a taxi in order to get his family to the airport on time. While we all think it's kind of badass that the driver recognized driving greatness and relinquished control to Schumi &mdash the authorities don't quite see it that way and are considering talking punitive actions against the Schum and the driver. But the driver has a plan to make some money: auction that puppy off. More »

Ekstrom ROCks Schumacher in Head-to-Head Competition

It's Sweden versus Germany, DTM versus FIA and some guy you may not know versus the most famous man in racing. Two enter the ring. Only one walks out alive the winner. It's like Ingemar Johahnsson v. Floyd Patterson except with more spinouts and less historical significance. If you haven't guessed by now, it's Mattias Ekström versus Michael Schumacher to determine who is the "champion of champions" at the Race of Champions. (h/t Jan the Man)

Ekstrom Bests Schumacher, Wins Race of Champions

Super Swede DTM racer Mattias Ekström defeated the apparently fallible Michael Schumacher in the finals at the Race of Champions, which took place at the new Wembley Stadium in England this weekend. It was a furious battle, with each picking up a win in the first two events. But Ekström, who won last year, built up a lead in the final heat that forced Schumacher to push his car to the limits and spin out before crossing the finish line. For those who aren't aware, the ROC pits racers from different countries and different motorsport disciplines (NASCAR v. F1 v. Rally v. Moto) on parallel tracks in short heats. It's racing for people with short attention spans. Full press release below: More »

Michael Schumacher Races Taxi to Airport

Wide World of Sports Australia is reporting on a taxicab drivers' tall tale that both thrills and delights. According to German cabbie Tuncer Yilmaz, Michael Schumacher was late to the airport after picking up a new puppy for the family, so he did what any self respecting racing god would do, take the wheel himself. In Yilmaz's own words:
"I found myself in the passenger seat, which was strange enough, but to have "Schumi" behind the wheel of my cab was incredible"... "He drove at full throttle around the corners and over-took in some unbelievable places."
For the granting him the pleasure of speedily transporting his wife and two kids, and his new pup, der Regenmeister tipped ye old cabbie a smooth hundred Euros. No small sum considering that's almost enough to buy a house in Detroit these days.[WWOS.co.au]

Schumacher Sets Quickest Lap Just Because He Can

When you're Michael Schumacher, you can pretty much do whatever you want to whatever Ferrari that crosses your path. In this case, he was lending a hand to his old teammates and testing out their revised F1 car, sans traction control. Though technically in retirement, the seven-time world champ racked up 64 laps and set the fastest pace of the day in Barcelona. Though Schumacher's purpose is to help the Ferrari team and drivers, we wonder if his secondary purpose isn't to remind everyone that he's still their superior. [ITV-F1]

Michael Schumacher Rides Ducati At Valencia, Throws Down Stellar Lap Time

Schumi's got to have one of the busiest retirements we've ever seen. When the seven-time Formula One winner's not testing the 599 GTB on the Nordschleife, or spending time as the consigliere to the Ferrari F1 team, he's apparently having a go at other forms of racing. Like this past weekend when the legend of the prancing stallion brand took off two of his wheels to take some laps during a special guest ride on Casey Stoner's world championship-winning Ducati in Valencia. Although Schumacher's no stranger to MotoGP, he rode a 990cc Desmosedici at the Mugello circuit in Italy back in 2005, one still wouldn't expect the German F1 star-of-stars to have times approaching that of a MotoGP winner. Wrong. Schumacher completed 58 laps, including a fastest lap time of one minute, 37.89 seconds. That's just over five seconds outside Dani Pedrosa's new lap record, which the Spaniard set in winning the Valencia MotoGP on Sunday. Want to know what made Bo Jackson's Schumi's time so amazing? The Other Schu(macher) Drops...off the Foot of Team Toyota

The Toyota F1 team confirmed reports Monday that Ralf Schumacher, the little brother of the seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, will leave the team at the end of the season. Someone sent me a link to the announcement earlier in the day along with a message that said "Schumacher's leaving Toyota." I was momentarily confused. More »

Spy Photos: Is Schumacher The New Ferrari Chassis Macher?

Looks like Schumacher's not spending too much time away from cars now that he's retired from the sport of racing. According to the UK auto mag, Autocar, the German racer with the penchant for Italian race cars since '96 is helping Ferrari with testing its newest whip. It appears as though the recently retired racer was taking laps on the Nordschleife, giving the 599 GTB test car some track time on the Nurburgring. It's a new move for Ferrari, and certainly a new move for Schumi, but we're wondering how cool it'd be to see the race-macher taking the "Schumacher turn" in person.

Schumacher Back on Track

You can take Schumacher out of a racecar, but you can't take Schumacher out of the race. After a very brief retirement from the rigors of the F1 circuit, Schumacher will return as consigliere to the Ferrari F1 team. The seven-time F1 world champ will be available to assist Massa and Raikkonen take the prancing horse to victory. In the unlikely event of driver error, Mr. Schumacher will don a special helmet slapping glove and hold up a sign that says "dumbkoff". More »

Retirees Buy The Darndest Cars: Schumacher Acquires Daytona Super Coupe

A German newspaper reports that retired Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher picked up a 38th birthday present for himself. It's a rare Daytona Super Coupe. No word on whether it's a replica or one of the originals, though we'd imagine if anyone had the bank to scoop up one of the mid-1960s Shelby-Brock masterpieces, it'd be Schuey. Maybe he'll even drive it like he embezzled it. [Thanks to Christian for the tip.] More »

What Won't Schumacher Do for a Laugh?

Funny how now that Michael Schumacher's gone from the grid, he almost seems like the F1 legend the stats say he is. Despite his winningness, Schumacher's driving style never quite inspired the kind of mad, passionate following of, say, Giles Villeneuve, by way of his hell-for-leather antics, unconscionable lap times and ultimate demise. You might even call Schumacher, oh I don't know, a bit wooden. [Thanks to Alex for the tip.] More »

Kid to Leave the Picture: Michael Schumacher Announces Retirement

Say what you will about Formula One racing these days — the tooth-and-nail fighting for position, the swiping and sniping, the bump and run (and that's just in the front office) — but future racing historians will remember Michael Schumacher as one of the sport's premier drivers and savior of the Ferrari Grand Prix mojo. Today at Monza, after effectively capping a career's worth of achievements with his 90th win, Schumacher — as expected — announced he'll be retiring from Formula One after this season. The 37-year-old has already beaten Aryton Senna's record for pole positions (65) and has won nearly double the number of races as the next winningest F1 racer, Alain Prost. What's next? Did someone say rally? More »
