Personally, I have mixed feelings about the Element. I thrashed around in a previous-gen SC with a five speed for a few days, and I thought it to be a neat little machine. Pluses were the oddly peppy performance and handling, good ergonomics and build quality, and spacious interior. Deal-breakers were the surprisingly mediocre fuel economy and the four-seat layout. Without the need to regularly carry refrigerators, I ended up with a Mazda 3 hatchback. I am surprised at how many Jalops own these things--despite the obvious "it's ugly" backlash, it seems like plenty of people plopped down their hard-earned cash for one. Can't say that about a lot of the ostensibly more "popular" cars that appear on this site.
The official car of Oregonian surfers. I like element in all it's funkiness but it keeps getting less interesting. I liked the black cladding and chunky styling better.
For awhile, I was holding out hope that they'd actually be bringing the Honda Crossroad over here to replace the Element. Not that I dislike the Element anymore, but I really liked what little I saw of the Crossroad even more.
I used to hate the Element styling, but after riding around in a coworkers all the time I'm loving the utility of this thing. Just wish it got better mileage. My wife's CR-V gets excellent mileage, but my coworker said he does well to average 18mpg with his.
@Ron-Mexico: yep, they get horrible mileage. 4WD in particular.
I hadn't seen that Honda Crossroad before - is that like a smaller version of the Pilot? I'd consider a Pilot but for the fact that it is really too large.
That "No scheduled tune-ups for 100K miles," don't you believe it. I've heard one too many horror stories from folks who tried to go the specified 105K before replacing the timing belt, only to have the old belt die somewhere between 100 and 103K. Yow.
60,000 miles, unless that belt was certified by Jesus Himself. And even then I'd probably still get mine changed.
What happened to Hondas being compact, neat, and economical? This thing looks big, overwrought, and thirsty. Pass.
@Elhigh: 105k? You wouldn't happen to be referring to VW, would you?
Conveniently, their powertrain warranty was 100k at the time. No coincidence.
Water pumps often failed well before 105k, which would blow the timing belt and often all 20-30 valves on the engine. Other engines had the timing belt tensioner go bad early, same results.
So even if you documented all your maintenance and got VW to pay for it, you were still without a car for a couple weeks, then you're left wondering if they even fixed the engine correctly.
The Honda K-series motors use timing chains, not belts. I'd think if a belt failed before the scheduled maintenance interval, that would be a fairly simple warranty claim, no?
@danhar2: I wouldn't hesitate to trust a chain to 150K and far, far beyond. At 185K my 22R is just barely done breaking in its second chain - I only replaced it because I got tired of the ticky-crunchy noise of the broken chain guides; replaced them and the chain while I was in there.
@Ash78: My friend's mother has one - she's coming up on 50... and has slept in it in the past.
The IT guy at my school's considering one, as well, but he's got two greyhounds, which is as good a reason to buy a small wagon you can mop out as any other I can think of.
Probably stickier tires and bigger wheels (I doubt ECU remapping or anything like that). The base model numbers are usually boosted with hard compound tires which are often crap.
@Ash78: Why does the manny tranny lose 2 mpg to the slushbox? Weird. 23 highway is poor mileage...how does the Accord get 30 with same motor and similar weight?
I still like this box. Even the SC looks okay, but I think it's a stupid package for this kind of car.

This new design with the broad sides looks monotonous, like a postal van. And not the funky, cool Jeep postal van, but the weird, modern Grumman type.

Preventive maintenance, always, ftw.

It's a hell of a lot cheaper to just replace the belt more often than to replace the engine even once. That's where I'm coming from.

The other 19% are florists and caterers.
And 1% are Honda's original "hip, young" target market for the vehicle.
