And I thought I was bad going 15k a few times in my truck's 320,000 miles of life! (Currently working on 10k, but it needs oil every 3k, so I guess that's like an oil change...)

@Jim-Bob: Yeah, just do the filter at regular intervals and let it change its oil most of the time.

1.75 light-seconds, you'd expect it to leak some oil.

This reminds me of when I was working at a Jiffy-Lube. This asshole guy with a fleet Ford Explorer comes in with 26k on the clock for the car's first oil change. There was no excuse not to do it since it's fucking PAID FOR by the fleet, yet... no service till 26k. Just because the driver said "he'd been busy".

I wanted to fucking bludgeon the guy to death.

This kind of over-the-top abuse and negligence is tantamount to beating your dog in my book.

@Plecostomus will never win COTD... but has a: Surprisingly few people even care about whether or not their car is maintained properly, even if they don't do it themselves. This is why everyone has bald tires, uselessly worn wipers, lights out, and the original oil at 30k.

As someone else pointed out here recently, a lot of people equate car washes with car maintenance. I, for one, haven't washed my car in 6 months, but I actually do mechanical maintenance BEFORE I end up stranded. Go figure.

@boosted-lego-wagon -> now boosted to 350hp: My first car was a Saturn, I learned the hard way that Saturns (or most motors) can lose oil pressure when lateral g's slosh the dino juice around.

So my 16 year old butt was driving around at high RPM with no oil pressure. Replacing that motor learned me good, always buy dry sump lube systems. Or if necessary don't drive like a hoon.

That's the beauty of the old Saturns (SL, SC, SW, L-series, Ion). They are completely anti-hoon driving. They just can't do it. And if you try, you will likely kill yourself and the car due to their sloppy suspension set up.

If that was a tractor or an antique.. you'd flush it out with some diesel / kerosene.. throw a new filter on it.. dump some cheap oil into it and it'd be fine.

These kids and their new fangled engines.. See the problem is that it's one of them chinese engines. if they put a proper american iron block engine in it they wouldn't have had this problem... probably crap chinese oil too.. made of lead and ground up children.. blah blah blah blah..

A girl I used to work with had a '90 Lexus LS (you know, the Camry with leather and gold badging).

She bought it with 100k on the clock and ran it up to about 250k in 8-10 years.

Never changed the oil. She said she just added more when it was low. So apart from the filter, she was sort of changing the oil on a continuous basis. I'm sure the lack of filter change wasn't helping with the consumption. But hey, it ran.

@Ash78: The first-gen ES (250, if it was a six, not sure if they all were) were literally Camrys with fancy badges. (Based on the Vista, which was - yes - just a Camry with new taillights/grille/etc. And available as a hardtop sedan! Cool!) The second-gen were actually slightly different, now Windom-based (is "Windom" like "Starion"?) and far more attractive than the contemporary Camry. Basically: Vibe:Matrix::ES300:Camry.

Looks familiar, I spent last Saturday pulling center-bolt valve covers off Vortec Chevy Small blocks at the Pull-a-part yard. Lots o sludge.

I had a friend that used to work for Saab at their call center for the 1-800 number. He would occaionally get calls about warranty problems for people that went 20-40k miles with NO oil changes.

These are the voyages of the Failboat Enterprise, its continuing mission to explore a strange new service intervals, to be the sole renter to the under-25 crowd, to boldly fail where no rental company has failed before. Except maybe Fox.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Every couple years when I have to take the vee-dubs in for pro service, my indy doesn't offer that. But he used to give me a ride to work when I worked closer to his shop. We've been fortunate, knock on wood trim (two Audi-derived B5 2.8 models with all the options, half of which work!)

It was a, wait for it, base Dodge Charger! I'm sorry lady, but my Geo Metro was sportier than that POS.
