You know, this makes two Saturns I'd actually consider buying (if it comes here).

The Astra is far and above one of the nicest hatchbacks on the road in the US, but its too pricey.

If this thing makes 300hp and gets AWD, I'd look into it.

This is potentially another euro-themed Saturn that we Americans can ignore.

I though the Aura was a decent-looking version of the Insignia until I saw the Malibu. Now the Aura is like the ugly stepsister.

Two things surprised me in that article:

    1. You can get a Camry with a stick?

    2. Dodge still makes the Avenger?

@Cognitive Friction: I saw a brand-new Camry with a stick when I worked at the Toyota dealership. That big, ugly, cylindrical gray stickshift sticking out of the console looked so out of place, in all the right ways. For a minute, I wanted it, as a big fuck-you to the automaticisation of our poor automobile.

I just find the whole current "mpg wars" a bit lame. Economy is important, sure. But the sliding scale of compromise is very, very short in this country and much of the legislation isn't helping matters. All I'm saying is that if we're suddenly supposed to care about mpg, it would behoove us to look around a little bit for some benchmarking, rather than patting ourselves on the back for something a lot of the world would scoff at.

The US is the Jamaican bobled team of fuel efficiency, but worse--you can't script a movie out of the situation with John Candy and Doug E. Doug. But the Camry could fit four John Candies in it, which is nice.

If almost every car can exceed the EPA estimates when driven correctly, why are the ratings treated like gospel? Or a better question is, why do the estimates suck so badly, even after a re-tool?

@Parramore64: They're complete crap now, IMO. The old ones, in a sense, were like a challenge:

"You too can achieve this with good driving"

But we Americans no longer enjoy challenges, apparently. The new EPA ratings are like No Child Left Behind meets "Yes We Can"
