I don't wanna grow up,
I'm a Jalopnik kid--
I wanna go fast and I wanna skid
So I can spin out--
More smoke, more torque
More fun, more quick!
Jalopnik! #soapboxderby
That's insane. I love it. Get wheelbarrow tires for it. Larger diameter, less rolling resistance. Makes for a better ride, as well, so your beer doesn't spill all over the place. #soapboxderby
@MushyHeirloom: Stump up for what we call 'forklift wheels' at Home Depot or Lowe's. Solid plastic is much faster than tires and the bearings are built for more weight, so they don't get quite as angry in single shear. #soapboxderby
Hey now, that's a pretty sophisticated steering linkage when it comes to unsanctioned downhill racing. Someone always has the center pivot board, or various bicycle and scooter front ends, or string wrapped around PVC. But the most insane thing I have ever seen, by far, was the guy who rode way at the tips of a pallet jack, steering with ropes tied to the handle.
Pictured above is the result of one test session where our driver was 'a little uncertain' about the steering. #soapboxderby
My first auto related project involved building a gravity racer with a friend. With no brakes and the steepest hill in town. It's a miracle we're alive. #soapboxderby
That looks like too much fun...! Of course it would have to be illegal. The seat and the chain steering wheel makes for a classy looking ride indeed. #soapboxderby
@mr_dude: I was being serious - did you think I was being sarcastic? I think it's a great shot... excellent composition, and check out all the lighting variances on the superstructure. Really dramatic shot. #goldengatebridge
@HoonThatFerrari: It started as a statement and ended as a suggestion.
The composition makes me fall out of my chair, bridge is getting its lean on, making me think Tacoma Narrows.
The red filter certainly creates the bridge/sky contrast, but those shadows are nasty - and it's not like the Bay Area lacks days with even lighting. #goldengatebridge
As far as the shadows go, that's part of what I like! Yeah, it's drastic differences from one extreme to the other... on the near tower itself, on the upper part of the sky vs the cables... but IMO that's one of the things that B&W really conveys best. To me (apart from the couple of degrees-tilt to the left, which annoys me somewhat) this is one of those great, iconic B&W images that you get a certain sense of scale out of that simply doesn't convey the same way in anykindachrome. #goldengatebridge
Speaking of Life, Google Books now has a virtually complete archive of scanned Life magazines from 1936 through 1972 (the last year as a weekly). An absolutely wonderful resource.
Having grown up in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge, when I first saw the Golden Gate Bridge in person my reaction was just ... meh. But I do agree that the Golden Gate was an architectural/engineering achievement at the time. #goldengatebridge
What an awesome bridge. I have a friend on another car forum that had the chance to go up to the top. The view from up there is breathtaking. I wish I was at home so I could post some of my own shots... among other reasons... #goldengatebridge
I love watching documentaries about old-school bridge building. The workers in the dark, muddy, pressurized caissons (deep below the pillars, underwater) were about as bold as a human being can get. #goldengatebridge
Still achingly beautiful, and a stunning achievement. Those art deco roadway lamps are just killer. They fit perfectly with all the other riveted plate details. #goldengatebridge

My dad had a Fiat 1500 sports car, the predecessor to the 124 Spider. It's so rare that I've never seen another one. I loved it and I loved my 128 Sport, too. But the best Fiat I ever drove was my Fiat Abarth OT-1000, which was a stroked Fiat 850 convertible (with the covered headlights). #fiat128

Well approved, folks. I kinda wish I'd thought to do something like this... and, yeah, I'd probably have lawnmower wheels, too. #soapboxderby
