<![CDATA[Frankfurt Auto Show: 2009 Jaguar XF]]> Here you go kids, it's your brand-saving entry from Shag-you-are, the XF. Yeah, it's not as hot as the XF Concept, even though Mr. Cullum promised it would be. Still, this cat's got some good curves on her, even going so far as aping Aston's DB9 from behind. Dare we say that perhaps we were a bit too hasty in our initial verdict? Or does everything look simply snazzy under 17 coats of wax, professional lighting and 50 gallons of none-more-black paint? And have we shown you the interior? No, really, have a look at the gorgeous orange seats. You'll plotz. We did.

THE NEW JAGUAR XF

Challenging convention and setting its own rules, the new Jaguar XF fuses the style and performance of a sports car with the refinement, space and sophistication of a luxury saloon. This is the beginning of a new era for Jaguar.

The new XF: a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language, with a driving experience that exceeds expectations created by the striking appearance: relaxed and confident, with outstanding ability and control.

Resolutely true to the Jaguar philosophy of creating Beautiful, Fast cars, the XF goes further, adding a new dimension to the marque. The four-door XF has the visual excitement of a coupe, but room inside for five adults to enjoy an interior wholly contemporary in style yet uniquely Jaguar.

As well as space, the new XF's interior ambiance is enriched by crafted, luxurious materials, sophisticated instruments and calm interior mood lighting. Engineering excellence and attention to detail mean the XF's interior matches the best-in-class for refinement, while Jaguar's intelligent use of technology and driver-friendly Touch-screen controls add new layers of comfort and ease of use.

Every XF model has shift-by-wire transmission control, with Jaguar's class-leading sequential shift system - its popularity already confirmed by feedback from XK sports car customers - used for the first time in a saloon. Shift-by-wire replaces manual shift linkages with electronic commands and gives every XF rapid and very smooth gearshifts - faster, even, than the acclaimed XK's transmission.

The Jaguar Sequential ShiftTM System gives the driver the option of one-touch manual gearchange control via steering-wheel mounted paddles. There are also multiple JaguarDrive ControlTM transmission modes, including Dynamic and Winter settings, which interact with throttle progression, Dynamic Stability Control thresholds and shift strategy to match mood and conditions.

But the most exciting feature of the XF's transmission control is the all-new JaguarDrive SelectorTM - an industry-first rotary shift interface that combines precise, intuitive control with space-saving packaging, to allow maximisation of interior storage options.

Other innovative functional features add more 'surprise and delight'. Air-conditioning vents present a flush dashboard surface until the ignition is switched on, at which point they elegantly rotate to the open position. Another new technology - JaguarSenseTM - introduces touch or proximity-sensing control for overhead console lights and the glovebox release.

Every level of audio system features at least eight speakers, with a premium system designed in association with highly respected audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins available on range-topping models. Radio options now include a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) system and Sirius Satellite Radio for the North American market, while the XF technology count includes Bluetooth® communications technology, plus optional iPod® and MP3 player connectivity with full-function control through the Touch-screen - and an auxiliary port on every car for other portable audio devices.

Other available features include JaguarVoiceTM control to operate navigation and telephone functions, Blind Spot Monitor, Front and Rear Parking Aids and Rear Camera Parking Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Speed Limiter, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and Electronic Parking Brake.

Mick Mohan, XF Chief Programme Engineer comments:

"The interior of the XF is a combination of style and substance. It bristles with innovative, industry-leading features. From the smart technical solution of the JaguarDrive SelectorTM, through the seamless efficiency of rotating vents, to the simplicity of Touch-screen control, the XF proves aesthetics and function can work together in perfect harmony."

Engineering excellence and class-leading structural rigidity are at the heart of the new XF's construction. The advanced body structure, which comprises high-tech materials and new-generation design techniques, maximises strength and minimises weight to give the XF superb performance, refinement and efficiency across its range of V6 and V8 engines. These engines include the quietest diesel engine in its class and a supercharged V8 that delivers outstanding levels of performance.

The new XF is best in class for torsional stiffness, and with a wide rear track displays excellent handling characteristics. These elements underpin a dynamic ethos that is driver-focussed yet supremely comfortable and refined. Just as its looks promise, the new XF excels across the board, in every role from a sports car to a luxurious long-distance cruiser.

<![CDATA[Attack of the No Guys: A Doomed Plan to Save Jaguar]]> jag_stype_r.jpg

Ford executives have a long and noble history of failing upwards. This seems to be especially true where the company's Premier Automotive Group (Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, Aston Martin) is concerned. After Premier's premier Premier Wolfgang Reitzle bled billions trying to transform a rag tag army of money-losing foreign car brands into the Louis Vuitton collection of upmarket autos, Bill Ford offered Wolfie the keys to the entire kingdom. When Mark Fields assumed control of Ford's English patient, his efforts failed to staunch the arterial spray of red ink. In fact, Automotive News reports that Jaguar North America CEO Mike O'Driscoll, marketing executives Richard Beattie and George Ayres, sales boss Doug Speck, PR chief Simon Sproule and finance boss Geoff Cousins hatched a plan in '04 to restrict Jag sales to supercharged models. Rather than making a Bold Move, Fields let the brand's British bosses smother it in its crib. Today, supercharged X-Type prototypes are in storage, Jaguar's American sales are in the toilet and Fields has the keys to the executive washroom, as Ford's President of the Americas. Go figure. [FYI: Best quote: "All Ford's 'no' guys came out of the woodwork," says a Jaguar source. "You know, legal, engineering, warranty. It was doomed."]

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: Jaguar XF Production Model]]> Amid the din surrounding Jaguar's C-XF concept unwrapping, set for next week at the Detroit show, it's easy to forget the car is a mere augur for the S-Type replacement, unsurprisingly dubbed XF. Spies recently caught sight of that car, which will likely be less stylized than the proto-model that trumpets its arrival later in 2007 for the 2008 model year. As is clear from a new round of pics, the front and rear workups deviate from the prototype's Aston-like schnoz and bum, while the roofline, according to Winding Road, will make it appear less coupelike than the concept. Consider it like the bride a few months later, out buying a bag of pretzels. Or something.

<![CDATA[2008 Jaguar S-Type Facelift Revealed]]>

If the sign of a good facelift is you don't notice Dr. 90210's handiwork, the Jaguar's S-Type gets a unanimous two liposuction nozzles up. It's a little sleeker and more refined for 2008, though no performance gains are on tap for the top-of-mast S-Type R (were we expecting any?). The most notable (if not noticeable) work has been done to its face, which looks just like the old one, only different.

jaguar_stype_08.jpg

Press Release:

Jaguar Cars is proud to unveil the new 2008 Model Year S-TYPE range, which comes with a host of exterior and interior design changes as well as a series of new standard and optional features.

The latest S-TYPE continues to be loved and admired by customers throughout the world, attracted on an emotional level by its spirit of individuality, iconic design and sporting performance. There is also a rational attraction as well, with the recent addition of the acclaimed twin-turbo 2.7-litre diesel engine which offers outstanding performance alongside superb fuel economy.

For the 2008 Model Year, all S-TYPE versions feature an updated front end, with the addition of the sporting S-TYPE R bumper and mesh grille to all models. The new-look front is more contemporary, giving every S-TYPE a more poised and dynamic appearance.

A new series of beautiful alloy wheels adds to the sporting appearance of the 2008 Model Year. Entry level versions now come with the multi-spoke 17-inch Antares wheel as standard. The 18-inch Triton alloy wheel is standard on all SE models (18-inch Triton on UK Sport version), while the top-of-the-range S-TYPE R now comes with the stunning 19-inch Barcelona wheel as standard (except Japan, Austria, Germany and rough road markets).

The S-TYPE's interior is also upgraded, with the introduction of multi-function Sport seats (with non-perforated leather) instead of the previous Classic seat for all SE and Sport models. Entry-level S-TYPE models come with a leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard, while a new Satin Mahogany veneer is available as an option across the range. Choice is further extended with the option of a beautiful new Ivory and Charcoal leather colour combination for SE models.

Technical innovation is part of the S-TYPE's appeal and every new model will now come with Rear Park Assist as standard.

The 2008 Model Year S-TYPE range will be unveiled at the Bologna Motor Show in December 2006 and will be available for order from dealers immediately. [PLEASE CONFIRM]

<![CDATA[Add XF to S, Delete S: New Jag Sedan to Drop in '08]]>

Some people find the Jaguar S-Type to be rather hideous. We actually like it, although the design is certainly a tad long in the tooth and more-than-ripe for an upgrade. But this predictive rendering its successor, the new XF, due to roll into showrooms in '08...eeeee... It looks like what would result if Rover commissioned Ralph Gilles' old self to design an Audi. Unfortunate. Let's hope that the artist is off the mark. [Thanks to Matt for the tip.]

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: 2008 Jaguar S-Type]]>

You can't tell from the shots of this test mule, but Jaguar's next S-Type is on its way to a mid-2007 unveiling, ahead of the 2008 model year. A head-to-toe redesign — spec'ed in Photoshop on The Car Connection — will give the new-generation S a sleeker shape and, and hopefully for Jaguar, more customers. Drawing from the RD6 and R Coupe concepts, it'll feature an oval, mesh grille, twin single-unit headlights and a bumper with integrated twin fog lamps. Under the hood will reside the same powerplants as the current model: 2.7-liter turbodiesel, 3.0-liter V6 and 300-hp and 4.2-liter V8, along with a supercharged version powered by the XKR's eighter. With its fortunes unassured, Jag is in attack mode, with BMW's 5-Series in its sights. But can it pull the trigger?

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: 2008 / 2009 Jaguar S-Type]]> The folks over at the Road so curvy many would even call it Winding have made spy photog Brenda Priddy a little bit more monied today — buying shots of what she claims is the new-look Jaguar S-type. True, what you see before you, and in further detail at Sheryl Crow's fave site, appears to be little more than a 2006 Jaguar S-type with a bit of a new nosecone. Priddy suggests that this is but a mule for FoMoCo's "Team Jaguar" to test out the next-gen kitty's new engine. We'll let Priddy take it from here:

This prototype was photographed near Jaguar's German engineering center, close to the N rburgring circuit. This is what's known as a "cooling mule" - where the front of the new car is grafted onto the current model. Under the hood is a prototype set-up of the new engine and cooling system.

And although they've got that front-end well-covered until the 2008 debut in Europe and 2009 debut in the US, Priddy's folks have gladly provided a p-shop for you to feast your eyes on — a p-shop we might add that looks mighty different from the one on the cover of AutoWeek a few weeks back. Dueling p-shops and more, via the link below.

<![CDATA[AutoWeek on the Next Jaguar S-Type]]>

In this week's missive, AutoWeek's gone into high speculation mode regarding the next-generation Jaguar S-Type. They say (and frankly, they're not wrong) the success of the next S will likely determine Jag's fate. Considering the buckets of bucks Ford's poured over the cat in recent years, full envelopes had better start finding their way to the back room. AW says the next models will abandon styling tropes of the past and stake out new ground, led by design capos Ian "The Iron Pentagraph" Callum and henchman Julian "India Ink" Thompson.

The new model, due in 2008, AW says, have a steel monocoque, though the hood and trunk lid will likely be aluminum. It'll also sport a new 5.0-liter V8 producing in the 350-hp range. Judging from a published spec illustration, it seems looking to the Aston Martin Rapide for an approximation of the new model may not be the worst advice in the world.

<![CDATA[Alcoa Can Wait: Jag Ditches Aluminum for Next S-Type]]>

Remember the old days, back in 2004, when Jaguar — though circling the drain — was optimistic that aluminum stamping processes would lighten up its mid-range S-Type? Then, last year, the company said it would keep steel for the frame, but aluminum for the body. Now, word is, the next-gen S-Type will be fashioned entirely of Superman flesh, though would lose the platform it shared with the Lincoln LS in favor of all-new underpinnings. The good news is the steel job would save time, allowing the company to launch the next S-Type for 2008 instead of 2009 (before sales really fell off a cliff). Images of the new S-Type were revealed late last week as a teaser while Jag was introducing its XKR models. Good news for soda cans, bad news for Jaguar fans.

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: 2008 Jaguar S-Type]]>

The boys from MPH have procured some shots of a compelling test mule of the next-generation Jaguar S-Type. It's a current-model, on which has been attached a new front end that looks to be styled after Jag's R-D6 prototype, which we hear will heavily influence the new S-Type, due in late 2007 as a 2008 model. Apparently, this kind of Frankensteinan engineering is done quite often, though hardly ever using the brain of Abby Normal.

<![CDATA[Jaguar's New S-Type: Ground-up Redesign, Part Aluminum]]>

Jag's next-generation S-Type, coming in 2007 as a 2008 model, won't have an all-aluminum chassis like the XJ and new XK coupe, according to AutoWeek, but it will get a ground-up redesign that includes a lightweight aluminum (that's al-u-MINum) body. According to UK witnesses, the new car will have a body that shares the currently fashionable "four-door coupe" design like the Mercedes CLS — making Jaguar the fourth company rumored or confirmed to be preparing such a car, behind Mercedes, Pontiac (!), Porsche and VW. AW also reports the car's face will be heavily influenced by the R-D6 concept (pictured).
