If so, why did Ford do a big Bronco concept in 2001 and were working on a LR-looking Bronco in 2003 (U365, IIRC)?
I think they decided in '98 they were doing a Lotus, naming all their SUVs with Es (Escape, Explorer, Expedition, Excursion) adn just never could find the justification to bring he Bronco back.
I'm inclined to think the death of the Bronco had more to do with shifting tastes in SUVs-- away from truly truck based SUVs. I think Ford was just a bit behind Chevy, who killed it's K5 Blazer without needing OJ's help.
I think the 2 things that did the K5 and the Bronco in where priorities shifting towards comfort and pose over actual utility and, eventually, an unwillingness to tolerate jsut 2 doors on a vehicle that size. The post-K5 Blazer and the Expedition were both more integrated SUV designs, feeling less like the lightly modified trucks they had been.
As far as the name, Ford decided to go with an "Ex__" theme for the names of their very clearly related vehicles: Explorer, Expedition, Excursion, Excess, Excrement, E[x]tc...
I was told Bronco sales actually increased after the OJ incident.
Additionally, ~95 was when 2-door fullsize SUVs pretty much died. Chevy replaced the 2-door Blazer with the 4-door Tahoe and Dodge didn't release a Ram Charger on the new-for 94 Dodge trucks.
I had a 1990 Ford Bronco Eddie Bauer Edition nearly a decade after that and people still said "like O.J's?" I loved that old truck. 5 litre 5 speed auto 4x4 with removable top, no shoulder belts in the back when it came out. The seat tumbled forward and gave lots of room in the back. Since is was a 1990 and I had it in 2002 I was not worried about dinging it up.
I even t-boned this Toyota in it in a downtown intersection and I smashed the hell out of the Toyota but only messed up my bumper which was easily replace via pick and pull.
wow i got that a crazy feeling of being old now, just by this post. I also cant believe that was 15 years ago...back when i was in high school, My dad owned a 93 or 94 black and tan Eddie Bauer Bronco at the time..after that day being dropped off at school was full of OJ jokes. I asked to be dropped off a couple blocks from school soon after that.
As I'm reading your recollection, I remember I was out of college a couple of years and was, for three years, dating the woman I have since married by this time.
Gettin' old sucks. First, you can't remember shit. Then, the fookin' oldies station starts playing songs which you bought, new, on LP.
@Pffft...Prius. Get an '81 Tercel, instead!: Yeah, I was listening to a classic rock station the other day and they played "Evenflow" by Pearl Jam...I almost walked my fat ass into oncoming traffic!!!

Chevrolet and GMC still did offer a 2 door Tahoe and Yukon until 1999 or so I believe, 98 at least.

There also was a 2 door Jimmy/Blazer unti like 2001-2002 I think.

george: "Is this a bronco?"
car salesman: "No, too much bad publicity from O.J. - this is the 'Escape'."
06/17/09
Car Salesman: Yeah, the Bronco's been discontinued. We're trying to shed that whole fugitive-on-the-run thing. This is the Escape.
George Sr.: What a fun name. May I test drive?

Besides a nameplate, he's to blame for killing good afternoon TV too, as the local Fox station was airing the trials instead of Animaniacs.

I remember turning on the TV at 4, expecting Animaniacs and found the freaking OJ chase interrupting my Animaniacs.
