Well, drat and double drat! No diesel Audis and no Porsche Spyders. This makes me especially unhappy, as I'm still hoping to be a corner worker at Belle Isle this summer. ALMS is my favorite racing series and I was so looking forward to those prototypes in particular.
okay... just read the post... haven't read the comments yet...
come on jalopnik... can't we find a way to go back to the old format that requires no left-right scrolling....
that makes all of the commentariat happier....
jalop model year '09 is not an improvement as far as individual posts go......
i understand the change in the front page... i don't need it... i read them all.. but.. i understand...
but the pages that follow... the full articles... need to follow more of the '07 format (in my opinion) with big picture... and text below... that one doesn't need to scroll back and forth to read....
and then comments... whether in classic or "new wave" form... what TF ever... we have the choice...
but i don't like having to scroll left and right constantly to try and read the journalistic posts made by the gawker paid staff (*note.... this problem isn't just jalopnik.... all gawker sites have changed font size/format and makes for a much more difficult reading experience...)
@bravenrace: If anything, there will just be less emphasis on prototypes for a while. I still think they're in better shape than Grand-Am, judging by the amount of manufacturer, sponsor and fan involvement.
@Van Sarockin: I wouldn't rule it out,as i mentioned earlier Audi or Porsche were showing an interest in the Redbull team not long ago,i think mainly to supply engines. But now a gap has appeared they are in the minority of car makers that could afford to do it.
How sad. ALMS has been some of the best racing in the US for the past few years. They have a very good program, and now the heart's being cut out of it. Somewhere, maybe someone will bring Big Wheel races to these tracks, so we can enjoy unbridled competition once again...
"There's no explanation for why either team pulled out of the North American series. The most obvious reason is the Carpocalypse, though it is possible the company is looking to compete in another series."
I've heard rumor of Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Audi considering supplying engines to IRL. Porsche as soon as '10. Wonder if this is the first part of a move like that.
Well. With Audi and Porsche pulling out, Drayson-Barwell separated, and Corvettes moving down to GT2, I might not go to Long Beach Grand Prix next year...
@layabout met the real Santa: Maybe Suzuki should put that car in production and hit the Series N (dunno what's it's called now, but the production car thinggie)
@c0de: You got it,PWRC. They claim it's to secure its own business environment for tomorrow, the organisation reviews every aspect of the operations and decided to focus on the core business functions such as the manufacturing system, environment technologies and development of new-generation powertrains. The credit crunch is hitting everyone where it hurts. They will still support/supply private entries using Suzuki's.
@layabout met the real Santa: Nissan/NISMO are already running and winning with GT-R's in the Japan Super GT championship. It would be nice to see NISMO get after Porsche, Ferrari, Chevrolet, and BMW in the ALMS.
seeing that the transmission cant handle a few LC starts idk how they expect it to last in a competition setting.
i would love to see it though. but that would also mean Porsche gets to bring the GT2, and Chevy could bring the ZR1, Ferrari seems to know what they are doing, ooh that would be a good time.
@GTI_MK5: ZR1? Uh, no. Even the rules making organizations realized that any body can slap forced induction on a huge engine. Rules limit forced induction engines to much less than the 6.2L of the ZR1. Gonna hafta bring the Z06 engine.
@GTI_MK5: They wouldn't use the DSG for obvious reasons. Chevy already has the C6.R, replaced by(converted to?) the GT2 car, Porsche has its venerable GT3 RSR, Ferrari has its F430 GT, with a couple of oddities like the Doran Ford GTR and the Panoz Esperante. GT2 class is going to be good next year, for all the wrong reasons. Ugh...
@layabout met the real Santa: That's not possible. For one, FIA GT2 restriction doesn't allow DSG, as well as AWD. Nissan would have to make a car specifically for racing in GT2. So a GT2 GT-R would be another show pony. Of course, FIA GT2's not the same as ACO GT2, but both are very similar. And ACO absolutely hates cars built specifically for racing in GT class so it'll never homologate such a car.

Or perhaps the mother of all Scalextric sets?

Hell, why not just do everything virtually? I've seen the graphics on Grid and GT5...who needs IRL (in real life) racing!

the GTR that is racing in the Super GT is NOTHING like the street car. its about as similar as the toyota camry is to its nascar counterpart
i believe the GTR is using a tube frame a V8...its a GTR only by name.
