Apparently it can turn a wheel too, posting a scorching 7:33 time around the Nürburgring. Still no GT-R 7:26.7.

Despite the six second gap between what this GT3 RS did and the GT-R has done (not to mention the Corvette ZR1's 7:26.4), the latest effort by Porsche still has some wiggle room. This run was made in traffic and judging by the telematics pulled from the car, there's at least another three seconds available with a clean run. The 450 HP, fully caged and stripped Porsche might not have been able to win this round of the Porsche-Nissan automaker slap fight, but it looked way better doing it. [Evo.co.uk]

<![CDATA[Ford Focus RS Hits Nurburgring For 8:26 Lap Time]]> With 300 HP out of a turbocharged 5-cylinder, the Ford Focus RS is one of the most delicious of Europe's forbidden fruits, and now we know what it'll do an 8:26 on Germany's Nurburgring. Jealous.

The car got a good solid flogging at the hands of the chief editor of Germany's Sport-Auto, Horst von Saurma-Jeltsch, who pressed the car through the 13 mile course in a very respectable 8:26. We continue to be very green with envy. [via Carscoop]

What exactly is this 275 HP, 295 lb-ft of torque inline-five-equipped 2009 Euro-spec Ford Focus RS doing on U.S. soil? We're not quite sure, but it's not uncommon to see non-U.S. spec cars sporting manufacturer plates running around these parts. <![CDATA[2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Caught With Its Pants Completely Down]]> The refreshed 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS got caught with its pants completely down and we've got the photos to prove it.

Having recently revealed an updated 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera, Cabriolet and 2009 Porsche 911 Targa 46, Porsche has laid the framework for the model we're really interested in, the GT3 RS.

In these recently taken photos of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS, you can see that it receives a mildly revised front fascia with larger side intakes and the blinker/LED DLOs from the new Carrera model. It also appears that the lower lip spoiler has been re-sculpted to allow for better airflow around the front end. The rear of the car carries on with the same spoiler as the previous version and the taillights are the same LED units as the rest of the revised 911 line-up. The big change to the rear is an all-new rear fascia with a single large vent on each corner as opposed to the dual split vent setup on the previous model. The lower trailing edge of each vent sweeps towards the center, up and over the exhaust. Expect the RS to carry on with its unique theme of decorative stripes; exterior colors; contrasting painted mirrors, wheels, rear spoiler endplates and rollcage.

Moving on to the wheels, if you look closely, you’ll see the coolest change that Porsche has made to the new model. The new GT3 RS will, as standard, feature Porsche’s center-lock hub that was debuted a few months ago as an option on the 911 Turbo model.

The powertrain will come from the current cars 3.6-liter flat six but will most likely gain direct fuel injection or a tweaked version of the new 3.8-liter flat-six from the revised Carrera – which could produce around 440bhp, allowing it to best the current cars 0-60 time of close to 4 seconds and 193mph top speed. Either engine will likely be offered with Porsche’s new DSG-style PDK transmission.

You’ll be able to taste the rainbow next year when the revised 911 GT3 RS reaches dealers in all your favorite skittles colors.

<![CDATA[New Ford Focus RS Priced From $38,000]]> You can have the most forbidden of Ford's fruits, the 2009 Ford Focus RS, for £24,995 in Brit money or $38,359 if you're in the US and into torturing yourself.

Every time we see a Focus RS, it reminds us of the famous pre-hippie era image of Woody Guthrie holding his guitar emblazoned with the slogan "This machine kills fascists," only we imagine a bumper sticker on the tail of the Focus RS reading "This machine kills tuners." We want a Focus RS so bad our insides ache. And with today's announcement from Ford that the pocket rocket will be selling for £24,995, or about $38,359 in imaginary US sales dollars, it makes the churning in our gut even more intense.

For that dough Ford will serve up a turbocharged 2.5 liter five cylinder with 300 HP and 324 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed transmission, all good for a 0-62 mph under six seconds with a top speed of over 160 MPH. Want.

Combine these stats with the cruel, cruel release of follow-up video featuring World Rally Championships superstar Marcus Grönholm blasting around the inside of a stadium to rousing applause and columns of fire and we're pretty sure Ford of Europe is just doing this on purpose. PRICES ANNOUNCED FOR 2009 FORD FOCUS RS

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 15 December, 2008 Ford’s fastest-ever European production car, the 2009 Focus RS, will be priced from £24,995 when it goes on sale in the UK in March.

The new Focus RS is the first Ford to wear the famous Rallye Sport badge since the first-generation Focus RS was launched seven years ago, and the 22nd since 1970.

RS denotes a distinctive blend of high performance, road-holding, refinement, safety and value for money, and reflects a proud tradition of successful motor sports involvement that continues to the present day.

Under the bonnet of the Ford Focus RS is a turbocharged 2.5-litre, five-cylinder Duratec petrol engine, with a confirmed 305PS and 440Nm peak torque. Features include unique camshafts and a revised cylinder head and gasket, intake and manifold system.

Front-wheel-driven through a six-speed transmission, the Focus RS accelerates from 0-62mph in under six seconds and has a targeted top speed of over 160mph.

A class-leading balance of traction, sports handling and performance is achieved through the combination of a Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential and innovative RevoKnuckle front-suspension system.

These features are complemented by a wider track, enhanced drive-shafts and rear anti-roll bar, revised springs and dampers and retuned steering, while a specially developed version of Ford’s Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Traction Assist (TA) provides added assurance.

Uprated disc brakes – 336mm ventilated front and 300mm rear – combine with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) to supply a reassuringly high degree of stopping power.

Taking its place as the top-of-the-range Focus, the RS will be immediately distinguishable on the road, with its unique bonnet, front bumper and side skirts. Also unique to the model are its 19-inch alloy wheels, shod with 235/35 tyres.

The rear twin-bladed spoiler - the continuation of an RS tradition – and the power/heated door mirrors are also distinctive, with their high-gloss black finish.

Xenon headlights with automatic levelling and jet-wash are provided, with LED lights at the rear. Dual chrome tailpipes add a further sporting dash.

A Quickclear heated windscreen is fitted, and privacy glass for the rear. A Ford Easy Fill fuelling system removes any risk of costly mis-fuelling errors at the pump.

The driver and front passenger benefit from unique Recaro sports seats, with side bolsters trimmed to match the colour of the car – green for Ultimate Green models, blue for those finished in Performance Blue or Frozen White. Rear passengers are comfortably accommodated in a sculpted Recaro-style seat.

A manual air-conditioning system is provided, and in-car entertainment in the form of a Sony radio and six-disc CD player with DAB. A Ford Power button allows for keyless engine ignition, and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm is standard.

A £750 Luxury Pack includes the options of Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (DEATC) air-conditioning; automatic headlights; rain-sensor wipers; auto-dim rear-view mirror; rear parking-distance sensors; tyre deflation-detection; and a Ford Key-Free system. The £1,500 version of the Luxury Pack adds in a Touchscreen DVD Navigation System, with seven-inch touch-screen.

Other optional extras include partially leather-trimmed seats at £500 and, for £200, Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and USB port. Specifying a metallic version of the Performance Blue paintwork costs £395, while a Tri-Coat Metallic Ultimate Green finish carries a £695 price tag.

The standard price of the flagship Focus RS compares with £20,408 for the ST3, the existing top-of-the-range Focus.

It's a fire-breathing version of the lightweight Catherham SV, with a supercharged 2.4-liter V8 making 500 HP. With that kind of power sent to street tires in a car that only weighs a few feathers over 1100 lbs, the RS Levante is the kind of ride that would make even the Stig's pants turn yellow. Not surprisingly, they've sold all of them. Sure, they only made eight, but that just means there's eight people who have purchased a $198,000 suicide kit. At least they'll go out smiling.

Power and poise
Twingo Renault Sport’s compact proportions and sharp styling embody its fun-to-drive,

the 133hp naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine is provided by a wide Renault Sport air-

Twingo Renault Sport is fitted with generously-proportioned tyres (195/45 R16 or 195/40
R17) mounted on aluminium alloy wheels. They house substantial brake discs and
callipers which provide powerful, durable braking performance. Twingo Renault Sport also
introduces a new colour to the Renault Sport range, with the new Altica Grey once again
echoing Twingo Concept. Three other metallic shades are available (Nacré Black;
Extrême Blue and Platine Grey), in addition to the non-metallic Vif Red.

Sports styling inside
The ergonomic driving position conjures up the world of racing with features that are
centred firmly on the driver: aluminium pedals, and a four-spoke perforated leather
steering wheel with dark charcoal stitching. For added comfort, it gives the driver's hands
perfect grip in the 'ten-to-two' position. The rev-counter is located directly behind the
steering wheel, echoing racing car design: employing a specific typeface, the numbers
grow in size as the needle approaches the red line at 7,000rpm. Just like in the cockpit of
the ING Renault F1 Team’s R28 Formula 1 car, the rev-counter features a gear change
alert to warn the driver as the engine approaches maximum revs.
The dark charcoal interior trim neatly expresses sporting performance. Offering additional
lateral support and outstanding comfort, the specific Renault Sport seats allow the driver
to feel at one with the car. The colour of the Blood Orange safety belts matches the

A composed, balanced platform
Like Clio and Mégane Renault Sport, the newcomer offers two chassis options: 'Sport'
and 'Cup'. In both cases, track has been widened by 60mm at the front and by 59mm at
the rear compared with Twingo GT. These modifications improve stability and lateral grip.
The front suspension is a pseudo-MacPherson type arrangement, with aluminium lower
arms. The adoption of pushrods on the dampers improves the performance of the anti-roll
bar for even better body control.
Twingo Renault Sport's rear suspension is based on an H-type programmed deflection
rear beam. To improve ride and comfort, the dampers are mounted vertically and coupled
with variable rate coil springs. The 24mm diameter rear anti-roll bar (compared with
22.5mm on Twingo GT) brings a stiffness gain of 25%. The anti-roll front/rear
performance split has been calibrated to improve rear-end agility for extra enjoyment and
also enhance the overall sports performance of the chassis.

Sport chassis: nimble and responsive
The Sport chassis has been engineered for the best and safest balance between driving
enjoyment and performance. Compared with Twingo GT, it features a lower centre of
gravity thanks to a 10mm lower ride-height. Stiffer springs (plus 30 per cent compared
with Twingo GT) and uprated dampers (also plus 30 per cent) contribute to the car’s
sporty handling, while firmer bushing has enhanced directional precision front and rear.
The Twingo Renault Sport 'Sport' chassis is also fitted with generously-proportioned tyres
(195/45 R16).

The performance-focused Cup chassis
Twingo Renault Sport is also available with a Cup chassis for incisive handling and
maximum driving enjoyment. In this configuration, Twingo Renault Sport offers handling to
satisfy the demands of any enthusiast. This chassis offers optimum body control and its
natural home is on the track, where flat cornering and improved corner speed
demonstrate its effectiveness.
The Cup chassis rides another 4mm lower than the standard setting, and its lower centre
of gravity improves in-corner performance thanks to reduced weight transfer. Tuned
damper settings and higher spring rates (10 per cent stiffer front and rear) bring greater
performance through better body control.
The Cup chassis-based Twingo Renault Sport stands out by its Dark Metal Grey 17-inch
aluminium alloy wheels equipped with 195/40 R17 tyres engineered for efficiency.

Powerful, durable stopping power
Twingo Renault Sport benefits from Renault Sport's braking expertise to deliver powerful,
durable stopping power combined with a reassuringly progressive brake pedal feel.
Twingo Renault Sport is equipped with the same discs as Mégane II (280mm diameter
vented fronts, plus 240mm diameter rears), New Laguna-sourced front callipers (57mm),
and Mégane II rear callipers (34mm).

Segment leading cabin space and flexibility
In day to day use, passengers will appreciate the roomy, modular interior and spacious
boot, all hallmarks of Twingo which stands out as the A-segment benchmark in these
domains. Depending on market (and/or chassis type), two types of rear seats are

- a removable, folding rear bench seat,

A PUNCHY, FLEXIBLE ENGINE

Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6 litre 16V engine
developed by Renault Sport Technologies. This powerplant pumps out 133hp
(98kW) at 6,750rpm with 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The unit’s punchy character
is reinforced by a characteristic engine note which has been the focus of specific
development. The four-into-one exhaust is a technological feat, striking a perfect
balance between acoustics, performance and low emissions.

A sporty, normally-aspirated engine
Twingo Renault Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre 16V engine (K4M RS)
which delivers 133hp (98kW) at 6,750rpm and 160Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. This free-
revving engine offers flexible performance and instantaneous throttle response. At low
revs and in the mid-range up to 4,500 rpm, Twingo Renault Sport offers lively yet
manageable performance for everyday use. Beyond 4,500rpm, Twingo Renault Sport
gives full vent to its sporting character with true punchy performance. The car accelerates
from standstill to 100kph in 8.7 seconds, while top speed is 201kph with the rev-limiter at
7,000rpm. Fuel consumption is a low 7 litres/100km, equivalent to CO2 emissions of
165g/km.
The 133hp 1.6 litre 16V powerplant has been developed from the 1,598cc petrol engine.
The improved power and torque are the result of modifications and improvements to the
mechanical components:
The air filling rate has been improved thanks to a specific throttle valve unit and
aluminium plenum chamber, plus revised diameters and lengths for the air-inlets.
To improve air intake and facilitate gas flow, research was carried out on the
aerodynamics of the valve seats. The calibration of the camshafts was revised to a longer
opening of the valves and higher lift (11mm compared to an average of 9mm).
The design of the combustion chamber and piston produces a high compression ratio of
11.0:1, leading to enhanced combustion and efficiency, as well as less emissions.
The continuously-variable inlet camshaft improves performance right across the rev
range. The actuator varies the timing setting to optimise valve opening and closing. This
system operates continuously through 44° of crankshaft rotation.

Sports performance and acoustic enjoyment
The experts at Renault Sport Technologies have worked hard to give Twingo Renault
Sport an engine note in keeping with its sporting character. The engine noise is minimal at
low revs, but builds mid-way through the rev range to become ‘fiery’ when pushed to its
limits.
The four-into-one exhaust manifold, made from thin-walled steel, forms the object of a
patent by Renault Sport Technologies. The technological feat is to have combined four
long steel tubes in such a restricted space. This architecture offers an excellent trade-off
between acoustics, performance and emissions. Indeed, the engine has been designed to
be able to comply with Euro5 legislation.
Twingo Renault Sport is fitted with an evolution version of the five-speed manual gearbox
(JR5). The closely-spaced ratios are linked to a fast and precise shift mechanism to
favour crisp acceleration in all gears.

Twingo Renault Sport is the latest addition to the Twingo range and reinforces
Renault's status as a major player in the European small car market. It is
manufactured at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia.

Renault Sport Technologies expertise packed into a small car
Twingo Renault Sport is the latest model in the Renault Sport Technologies range, and
will reach market late in the third quarter of 2008 in Western Europe. This latest example
of Renault’s hot hatch prowess rounds off the Renault Sport family which already includes
Clio and Mégane Renault Sport.

With nearly 13,000 registrations in 40 countries in 2007, the Renault Sport range
registered an increase in volume of more than 50% compared with 2006.
The arrival of the new Twingo Renault Sport will help the Group expand its presence even
further in the hot hatch market. The United Kingdom is the number one market for Renault
Sport vehicles, and should account for a third of sales. France, Spain, Italy, Germany and
Switzerland are expected to share half of Twingo Renault Sport registrations.

The Twingo success story
Twingo was progressively introduced in Europe from June 2007. Up to the end of June
2008, approximately 140,000 cars had been sold which is in keeping with the ambitious
objectives it has been set. It stands out as the segment's clear leader in France with sales
in excess of 60,000. Twingo also sells very well in Belgium, where it tops its segment,
Germany and Holland (second in segment). Twingo enjoys a 10 per cent share of the
small car market in Western Europe, which puts it in the top-three. For comparison
purposes, the segment share of the first generation Twingo in Europe was 4.5 per cent as
of the end of June 2007.
Upper range versions account for more than half of total sales, and Twingo GT has also
proved immensely popular, with a share of up to 25 per cent in markets like Switzerland

role as a key player in the small car segment in Europe.

Optimized production lines
Twingo Renault Sport is produced at the Novo Mesto factory in Slovenia which is where
all Twingos are manufactured. Novo Mesto enjoys both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
certification. It applies the Renault Production Way (SPR) and the standard of quality it
delivers is as high as that of any Renault Group production facility.
The Renault Sport version is manufactured on the same line as Clio Campus and New
Twingo. The three vehicles are based on the same platform, which allowed the facility to
adjust quickly to the new model. Some 80 per cent of manufacturing operations are
identical between Clio Campus and New Twingo, while 90 per cent are common between

<![CDATA[New Porsche RS Spyder Race Engine Gets Direct Injection]]> Proving that road technology eventually filters down to race hardware, Porsche will be upgrading the 3.4L V8 present in its ALMS LMP2 class Porsche RS Spyder with direct injection. The technology was developed for the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche 911, and, given the performance advantages, engineers decided to back-hack it into the prototype V8. The old version of the engine turned out a stout 476 HP at 10,000 RPM along with 273 lb-ft at 7,500 rpm; the direct injection and obviously remapped fuel curve bump power to 503 HP at 10,000 RPM, and 284 lb-ft of torque at 8,500 rpm. This motor communes with hummingbirds.

According to Porsche, the most notable advantage — after the power upgrades — is the improved energy efficiency. With lower fuel consumption, the engine not only makes the car go faster, it keeps it out of the pits, a key to any race, endurance or otherwise. Also interesting is that Porsche seems to have aped GM's "No Lift Shift" present in the Chevy Cobalt SS for the new car, with the option of full-throttle shifts. We won't expand on how much this last bit amuses us.

Direct Fuel Injection Lowers Fuel Consumption and Increases Performance in 3.4-Liter V8 for 2008 Porsche RS Spyder in the American Le Mans Series
ATLANTA - July 31 - Following in the footsteps of the street Porsche Cayenne and 911, the sports prototype Porsche RS Spyder now profits from direct fuel injection technology (DFI). The new engine, with which Porsche underlines its role as technology leader in energy efficiency, celebrated its race premiere with an LMP2 victory in the American Le Mans Series as Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) took the class win at Mid-Ohio earlier this month. The power output of the successful 2006 and 2007 championship winning Porsche, which has so far claimed victory from four of the six races run in this year's ALMS, increased with the new engine from 476 to 503 hp (370 kW) at 10,000 revs per minute. Maximum torque rose from 370 Nm (273 ft. lbs.) at 7,500 revs to 385 Nm (284 ft. lbs.) at 8,500 revs. The most compelling feature of the DFI version of the successful Porsche 3.4-litre V8 motor is its improved energy efficiency - an important element in endurance racing. Despite an improved power output, fuel consumption was significantly reduced.

After reaching a very high level with the previous engine we raced, we had to put considerable efforts into the development of the direct fuel injection unit in order to significantly improve performance and efficiency," says Thomas Laudenbach, Head of Motorsport Development/Power Train. "In order to achieve revs of up to 11,000 with DFI technology it meant stepping into totally new territory." During the design and development of the engine, synergies of product areas and motorsport departments were utilized to a large extent. "Right from the beginning there was a lively exchange," reminisces Thomas Laudenbach. "We had already recognized the advantages of this technology at the start of the RS Spyder project and adapted them to the very special requirements of motorsport, always in close consultation with our colleagues in the standard development department. The methods and insights we obtained from our co-operation are of considerable value for future development projects involving DFI technology."

Normally an increased engine output is in conjunction with a rise in fuel consumption. This is not the case here. "Thanks to the substantial increase of energy efficiency there's no rise in the absolute fuel consumption despite the significant hike in performance. On the contrary - we're even a bit lower," said Laudenbach. Another advantage of the new DFI engine: At partial load - for example during the many caution phases of long distance races - the engine can be run extremely lean. This further reduces fuel consumption and was not possible with the intake manifold fuel injection which was raced previously.

Moreover, new options open up for the controlling of highly dynamic processes like, for example, gear shifting at full throttle. Such options were not fully utilized before. After the successful premiere in Mid-Ohio, the new DFI motor will power the two Penske Racing RS Spyder cars for the next round next week at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. With this, Porsche intends to strengthen its top position in the American Le Mans Series. "Competition in the LMP2 class is at an extremely high level and it gets tougher race by race," says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Motorsport at Porsche. "Therefore now is exactly the right time to race the new engine." # # #

BRENTWOOD, July 4, 2008 - The legendary Ford RS performance car brand is returning in the shape of the exciting new Ford Focus RS, which will be previewed on July 22 at the 2008 London International Motor Show.

The new Focus RS will go on sale in early 2009 and is being created by a small team of dedicated engineers, under the direction of Jost Capito, Ford of Europe's Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles.

For performance road car enthusiasts, the new model will mark a welcome return for the Ford RS badge. This will be the second Focus model to carry the RS mantle and promises another exciting chapter in an exciting 40-year story that began in Germany in the late 1960s and gained momentum across Europe with the launch of the 1970 Escort RS1600.

Capito said: "We want the new Focus RS to be a serious high performance car - as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past. We're staying true to the core RS principles of an exciting, yet affordable performance road car you can live with every day."

Authentic RS presence and style

Before it even turns a wheel, the new Focus RS exudes the presence, sporty style and lowered, 'meaner' appearance expected of a genuine Ford RS. Overt performance styling details mix with subtle revisions to create a planted, powerful stance and the promise of an exciting drive.

The London show car previews the design intent for a final production vehicle, though as development work continues, some final details may change before volume production begins.

The vehicle is finished in a special bright green paint with inlaid metallic flake, a striking, modern interpretation of the 1970s Le Mans Green of the Escort RS1600 era.

The vibrant exterior color is contrasted with a number of performance styling details highlighted in gloss 'piano black', including the strip at the leading edge of the bonnet, the deep housings for the integrated front fog lamps and door mirrors with integrated side indicators.

Front and rear quarter panels have been revised to incorporate wider wheel arches and a wider track, complemented by revised, deeper side rocker moldings. In another visual reminder of the car's performance potential, triangular, RS-badged vents sit behind the front wheel arches. Two classic-style bonnet louvers are both a styling hint at the power beneath and a practical requirement, maintaining correct system temperatures.

The completely new front bumper design for Focus RS incorporates a deep front airdam with a large, mesh lower grille in an extended trapezoid. Stylish and practical, this prominent feature represents the latest Ford 'kinetic design' face and also is finished in piano black. Above, chromed xenon headlamps stand out like cat's eyes and are framed by matte-black housings with unique additional vents running underneath.

At the rear, a deep new rear bumper incorporates a large venturi tunnel to its lower edge with small vents at each corner of the bumper, emphasizing the car's width. Two impressive chromed exhaust tailpipes sit each side of the black venturi, creating a purposeful rear view for the car.

Above, a unique, twin-element, black RS rear spoiler sits at the Focus RS' roof line, echoing both RS models of the past and the World Rally-winning Focus WRC that has been its inspiration.

"We believe it's vitally important that a Focus RS looks like both a Focus and an RS - it needs to be individual, distinctive and overt in its performance styling, but it also needs to show a clear progression from and relationship to Focus ST", said Stefan Lamm, Chief Exterior Designer, Ford of Europe.

High performance interior

Inside, this theme continues with a unique and appropriately performance-oriented interior, dominated by bespoke, sculpted Recaro high-performance sports seats, specially designed and trimmed for excellent support, even when driving enthusiastically. Each is color-matched to the exterior, with ebony leather accents and 'RS' and 'Recaro' logos stitched into each backrest.

Elsewhere, color brings new excitement to the Focus interior, building on the sporty interior theme of Focus ST with more use of accents matched to the exterior color, brushed aluminum highlights and overt performance styling. Even the rear seats feature higher side bolsters and a microfiber finish to echo those up front.

The center console is finished in a stylish gloss, carbon-look trim and metallic highlights abound, from air vents, door grab handles, switchgear and gearshift surround, to unique RS-branded scuff plates on the door sills. These highlights contrast with a black-trimmed roof lining, emphasizing the sporty, cockpit feel.

The driver is reminded this is a special Focus at every touch, with a gear lever finished with a six speed gear shift graphic in RS blue, a sporty, three-spoke steering wheel, finished with 'Ford' and 'RS' logos and even aluminum foot pedals. The performance driving environment is completed by three additional gauges from the Focus ST, including turbo pressure, sitting atop the center console and angled toward the driver's eye line.

Powerful RS heart

At the heart of the all-new Focus RS is a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine. Significantly revised for high performance, this powerplant is targeting an impressive power output of 300PS and over 410Nm of torque, contributing to an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

Such significant increases are not simply the result of altering engine management or boost pressure: starting with the Duratec 2.5-litre block, Ford RS engineers developed unique camshafts, a revised cylinder head and gasket and revised intake and exhaust manifold system for the car.

Although the car is still in development, prior to its launch in early 2009, early performance testing indicates a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of under six seconds.

A traction 'Revo'-lution

Throughout Focus RS' development, Capito and his team have been keeping a sharp focus on creating a car that delivers excellent performance and traction.

Various innovations, developed as a result of customer feedback from previous performance Fords, have allowed engineers to keep the new Focus RS as front-wheel drive, with a limited-slip differential, while still achieving demanding targets for traction, handling and steering.

The new Ford Focus RS is equipped with an innovative front suspension system known as a 'RevoKnuckle', which is designed to reduce unwanted steering disturbance and torque steer, the impact of torque on steering in front-wheel driven vehicles. Torque steer occurs during hard acceleration, cornering or driving on uneven surfaces, when torque on the driven wheels exceeds grips levels. It is characterized by sudden turning force on the steering wheel and can be exacerbated by vehicles with wide tires and limited-slip differentials.

In Focus RS, the RevoKnuckle works in conjunction with a Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential. Ford Team RS engineers have worked closely with Ford's Advanced Research Center in Aachen, Germany to develop the RevoKnuckle technology specifically for the high performance Focus RS. It allows the simplicity of a traditional McPherson strut arrangement, but with geometry settings that minimize steering disturbances and torque steer, principally a reduction in steering offset.

"The Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car - agile, responsive and stable," explained Capito. "We studied at length how best to enhance these qualities for a high performance model. Our work has shown clearly that our approach in combining a tuned RevoKnuckle with the Quaife differential is an ideal solution for a high performance front-wheel-drive road car like Focus RS.

"As you would expect, we gave all-wheel-drive careful consideration, but by combining and tuning these elements and learning from Ford's expertise in industry-leading handling, we have managed to eliminate the weight of AWD from the car and still have been able to target a class-leading balance of traction, handling and performance.

"The result is a lightweight set-up, that will deliver the right blend of traction and razor sharp controllability - in a way no one would have expected from front-wheel-drive, and we believe we have made the right choice," Capito concluded.

Dynamic, agile and responsive

A genuine Focus RS must maintain and enhance the reputation for responsive, precise handling for which Focus is acclaimed and considerable engineering effort has ensured that the new Focus RS will do just that.

Driving quality developments for Focus RS include a 40mm wider track, stronger, longer drive shafts, revised springs and dampers and a thicker, longer rear anti-roll bar. At the same time, the steering system has been retuned to provide an even sharper steering response and very precise feedback.

Brakes also have been uprated, with 336mm ventilated front discs and 300mm rear discs generating vice-like stopping power on road or track. Large calipers peek out from behind unique 19-inch wheels, wrapped in 235/35 low profile Continental tyres.

A special version of Ford's ESP system has also been developed for Focus RS, designed to allow a very sporty driving style before activating. Intensive work to refine the natural handling abilities of the car has allowed the ESP system to carry a full de-activation option for enthusiast drivers and especially for track use.

"We are refining all the handling characteristics of Focus RS without ESP, to hone its natural responses, rather than use ESP to help its handling. In Focus RS, ESP is a pure safety device", explained Capito.

Reliable and durable

In creating the new Focus RS, Ford's Team RS engineers have had to meet the same stringent targets for durability and reliability as those set for the rest of the Focus range.

Despite its many bespoke engineering and styling elements, Focus RS will be built entirely on the main Focus production line in Saarlouis, Germany and offered with a standard Ford of Europe warranty.

A great heritage

The new Focus RS represents a significant moment in the heritage of both the Focus and Ford RS brands.

It is 10 years since the Ford Focus was first revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998, paving the way for a range of Ford vehicles whose exciting design was matched by class-leading driving quality. Since this time, more than 5.3 million Ford Focus models have been built in Europe, including Russia, with the car also built and sold in North America and Asia.

At the same time, the new Focus RS marks the return of the famous but rare Ford RS badge, last seen on the first-generation Focus RS in 2002 and with a distinguished heritage stretching back 38 years including Fiesta, Escort and Sierra models.

<![CDATA[Porsche Coming To New York, Bringing Three "World Premiere" Vehicles]]> Porsche just dropped a presser on us which has us scratching our heads. Any time we read words like "Porsche" and "First" and "Shown" in a press release, we expect the things contained therein to be, you know, Porsches being shown for the first time. In this case, that's maybe only partially true. In breathless verbiage, we're told all about the amazing new Porsche Cayenne GTS, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder and the racing Porsche RS Spyder. Problem is we've already seen the Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Porsche 911 GT2 in the flesh, the Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder has been both on the web and boring for nigh on three and a half months. And it would be a shock if the Porsche RS Spyder which has already won more races than we care to count wasn't pretty well known. So at the end of the day, we're really confused on exactly what it is we're supposed to be excited about here. But — the press release in all of it's breathlessness is below the jump.

World's first 300+hp Boxster, world's first 400+hp naturally aspirated Cayenne, world's first 500+hp 911: all in the Porsche stand at the Javits Center

New York, March 17, 2008 - In 2003, many pundits speculated that Porsche's move into the Sport Utility field would herald the end of the brand and the sports cars with which its name is synonymous. This year's press day's display at the 2008 Greater New York International Auto Show proves once and for all that every drop of that sports car DNA flows strong through the veins of every vehicle Porsche makes, today and in the future.

In 1960, Porsche earned its special place in motorsports history when the relatively small displacement Type 718 RS 60 Spyder took Porsche's very first International endurance win at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Overnight, Porsche became "The Giant Killer" having knocked off its bigger-bore, higher horsepower competition, including several factory Ferrari, Maserati.

To pay homage to that "Giant Killer," Porsche will introduce the Limited Edition Boxster RS60. With over 300 horsepower and a number of special "Boxster RS60" features, this commemorative sports car promises to capture the legacy of its forefathers in a package you can drive everyday.

Since the first Cayenne was introduced in 2003, Porsche has worked tirelessly to improve the breed. The latest of the new generation Cayennes is the 405 hp GTS. The Porsche Cayenne GTS, which has been called "the best handling SUV in the world," will be on display with its Porsche siblings.

For those who continue to insist in the face of overwhelming facts that Porsche has lost its focus on its core business, sports cars, Porsche will be displaying the ultimate 911 - the 530 horsepower, 505 lb. ft. of torque, 200+ mph Porsche 911 GT2. The GT2 demonstrates how Porsche is continuing to refine, improve and invest in its core sports car business.

In 2007, the Porsche RS Spyder proved once again that Porsche's heritage as a giant killer is alive and well. The Penske Team went to battle against the previously all-dominating Audi LMP1s with a lighter, more nimble, more fuel efficient, smaller displacement LMP2 car. <![CDATA[1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS]]> When I posted the DOTS Bonus Edition Abandoned Oakland Camaro, I wasn't prepared for all the emails I got pleading with me to add third-gen GM F-bodies to the Eligible For DOTS list. I'm still not 100% convinced they belong in DOTS proper, because they're still pretty common even in rusty parts of the country, but we'll give it a shot for today (and those of you who wish to make your feelings known on this important issue can go ahead and vote in the poll below the gallery). I picked this '89 RS, which was parked near the Bay in Alameda's West End, because it's so, well, Eighties.

Seeing the USS Hornet (and San Francisco) in the background reminds me that the Camaro was once the car to have for sailors stationed at Alameda's now-closed Navy base. You spent 9 months at sea in the Enterprise or Coral Sea, and your Camaro- which was kept stashed in a Navy parking lot packed with GM A- and F-bodies- would be waiting for you and your heavy right foot when you hit shore with a fat bankroll in your pocket. Unfortunately, the Navy wouldn't let its personnel grow mullets.

<![CDATA[2008 Scion tC Release Series 4.0 to Debut at Chicago, Continue Software Naming Convention]]> Toyota just dropped a press release which has everyone running to their Tandy's and Apple ]['s to make sure it's still 1987. Scion will be bringing what's called the 2008 Scion tC Release Series 4.0 to the upcoming Chicago Auto Show and will be making them available as of March. The "tC RS 4.0" as the marketeers are calling it, will have an array of "VIP-themed enhancements" such as gray sparkley paint, a body kit, embroidered alcantera seating, fancy steering wheel and shift knob and special badging. Pardon our underwhelmed reaction, but it sounds like an appearance package only a 17 year-old-old could love. If it floats your boat you better hop up real quick, grab the $2700 premium, and head down to your Scion dealer cause only 2300 are planned. Presser to the same effect below the fold.

Scion Announces Pricing for tC Release Series 4.0 - to be Displayed at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ — Scion, of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced today that the second limited-production Scion for 2008, the tC Release Series 4.0 (tC RS 4.0), will be available at dealer showrooms beginning in March. A tC RS 4.0 will be on display in the Scion booth at the Chicago Auto Show.

The 2008 tC RS 4.0 will feature Galactic Gray Mica exterior paint and will come with VIP-themed enhancements. A DAMD body kit and upper grille will make this tC standout. A color-keyed rear spoiler will also be available. Inside, the tC RS 4.0 will have gray and black Alcantara(R) seats, "tC RS 4.0" embroidered on the front and rear seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a black leather and dark wood RAZO shift knob. Like all Release Series vehicles, an individually numbered badge will complete the uniqueness of this vehicle.

Only 2,300 units of the tC RS 4.0 will be built. The tC Release Series 4.0 model will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $2,770 over the base price of the tC. The manual transmission tC has a base MSRP of $17,000, while the MSRP for the automatic transmission model is $17,800. The available color-keyed spoiler has an MSRP of $285, not including installation.

The delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee for all Scion models is $620 and is not included in the MSRP. DPH fees for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota (SET) and Gulf States Toyota (GST) may vary.
