    Actually, the two outter scoops were to allow for increased air circulation around the engine during warm weather. There were two "valves" when you opened the hood that read Warm and Cold. When it was warm, your turned the Warm valve to face you at the front of the car, allowing air to flow in through the scoop. When it was cold, again, turn the valve, and this would close off the vent, etc...

    My recently passed Uncle, who got me into cars had one of these as his daily driver in Michigan, up until 2005! Was a great car all around!

    The '77 Pontiac Can Am also had a shaker hood. That's always been one of my favorite malaise-era cars.

    I was always partial to the '71 Mach 1 hood scoop.

    I also have an un-favorite: anything in the JC Whitney catalog. Which is what about half of the 4x4 crew cab pickups in the area seem to have for some reason.

    It's like a giant NACA duct that seals to the aircleaner with a big rubber gasket...
    It's made out of fiberglass...
    It's painted in Organasol...
    What more could you want?

    @Vintage Racer - with V-12 goodness: I think that one is 2000TC based,they didn't put them on the 2000s.The (manual)2000TCs were nearly as fast as the auto V8s.Somewhere I've got a picture of the speedo of mine touching 120 mph.(Of course one week later it blew a head gasket)

    Clearly, the best factory hood scoop is the stinger hood on the '67 Corvette, and I'd give an honorable mention to the shaker on the malaise era Trans Ams.

    But I look forward to a seemingly unending string of obscure hood scoops of which I'm not yet aware. Bring it on, Murilee.
